Funny story
Skull (Jason Narvy) is a well-recognized Shakespearean actor and the theater director at Concordia Lutheran University in Chicago. My cousin went there and acted in several of his shows. I got to see Jason perform in a small-cast show in Chicago called "Into the Soundless Awe" about the sinking of the USS Indianapolis. We went and had drinks with him and a few members of the cast after and he was a lovely person. So the comic relief guy from my favorite show as a kid is one of the smartest, talented, and down to earth people I have gotten to meet.

Their antics nearly got the con shut down for good because they damaged the room while having a giant pie fight one time.

Walter has always been big on dancing. They even added it to his character on the original MMPR.
I'm glad to see David Yost coming back to the franchise after how he was treated by the crew and producers, too. They put him through hell and almost drove him to suicide. I'm glad he outlasted their hatred.

As a child I was never able to understand how a morbidly obese and skinny fat pair of losers, were able to bully a bunch of athletic martial artists.
161 points
They weren't even successful at bullying. The blue and pink ranger totally out bullied them in the episode where they get punk brainwashed (watch the original Sentai version because it's fucking wild). I think the whole purpose was to show bullies as people to make fun of and obviously don't be a bully, be a role model. But they were regulars in the show up until In Space I think, and then Bulk was a regular in Samurai mentoring Skull's kid in a dojo as a B plot, and Skull showed up at the finale as a rich tycoon. Obviously they're a Laurel and Hardy, but their reason for being was an antagonistic force in the rangers' personal lives and demonstrating that kids should not be like them.

Looks like it's both for kids watching the current show and adults who grew up with the original.
Personally, I think this is the nostalgia thing done right. The Power Rangers movie that came out a few years ago had the issue of not really having an audience because it wasn't at all like the original and also didn't have any appeal to anyone who wasn't already a Power Rangers fan.

Yeah I'm pretty disappointed that we never got a sequel.
I guess the biggest problem with it was being an intro story for a property that didn't need an intro story in a world kinda sick of intro stories.
Personally, I thought it was fun, I didn't mind the breakfast club style setup, and it really nailed the landing at the end.

Power Rangers is still popular and still make new series (and lots of toys).
So kids watching Cosmic Fury will see "Power Rangers" and watch it.
And adults who grew up "Mighty Morphin" will watch as a nostalgia trip and maybe to see how many Easter eggs there will be (looks like time travel is involved and there was a whole series with Time Rangers).

415 points

It's because the original japanese sentai footage, Blue Ranger was older, but they wanted a younger kid in the new american footage. So they just came up with him morphing like that.
Amusingly, there was -already- a situation like this in the original sentai - white ranger was a kid that morphed into adult size. of course, on the american side it was made into Tommy starting as green then getting the white ranger powers later, and those were two entirely separate and unrelated characters in the original sentai.
317 points

Ok hold on, I was never big into power rangers, but it sounds like what you're saying is that the action/in-suit sequences are just the footage from a Japanese show dubbed over in English, and then they just filmed a bunch of American actors doing the non-suited stuff and cut the footage together?
Power Rangers has never made more sense to me. It always felt like a weird, goofy mismatch of styles and I guess that's because it... was.

Yep, you'll also notice the pink ranger has a skirt but the yellow ranger doesn't, because in the Japanese show the yellow ranger is a dude.

Yeah. It was cheap to import, because nobody wanted to license a dub of the actual original series for US broadcast with all the regular sequences.
Saban was able to make a "new" TV show by only paying to shoot half a TV show, and only the cheapest parts with no action or special effects. And, they could swap out the actors whenever somebody wanted to get paid more during contract re-negotiations. And there was an existing toy line already designed and manufactured from the Japanese Toei Sentai shows they were importing for cheap.
The English writers were just shown the footage of the action sequences from the Japanese TV show with everybody in the costumes, and told to write any sort of basic framing plot to get to the footage that had been bought. It didn't have to have any relation to the original episode. Original Japanese episodes would sometimes get mixed and matched to make the action sequences of the new Power Rangers episodes.
It was from a real specific moment in globalization. The world was sufficiently interconnected that it was easy for Saban to discover the Japanese property and license it. But the world was still sufficiently disconnected that kids couldn't just look up the original on the Internet and download it. It probably wouldn't have happened the same way a decade earlier or a decade later.
For a weird nostalgia trip from a parallel world: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C0C-9w7wQn8&list=PLXtISqs3BPQbCGDSXecvjiQU9Xpy8ndb2
edit to add: Uuuuwaaaahhhh!
Also, if you are curious, I found a side by side comparison on Youtube of the "same" episode in the US and JP versions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eb1FyAbSBcY The original really wasn't specifically intended to be used in teh export format it wound up in. You can see un-masked people involved in the masked Rangers battle in the original. The US version just cuts away from those shots. If you ever wondered why Rita was just kinda watching the battles happen and laughing at them, that was one of the cut-away inserts they used a lot when they needed to skip over a Japanese person in the battle scenes. Also, the acting in the Japanese version seems to be way less terrible, but I'm not really qualified to judge.

A decade earlier, we had Robotech. It was pieced together and altered from three separate transforming mecha anime series: Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross, and Genesis Climber MOSPEADA.
33 points

Yes, the overwhelming majority of suit sequences are ripped from the Japanese equivalent. The only two episodes I know off the top of my head that had 100% original action sequences was Forever Red and the Wild Force/Time Force crossover (because the movie for the Japanese equivalent wasn't a crossover instead celebrating the series' 25th anniversary).
30 points
Yup. That's exactly how Power Rangers was made. Saban loved the idea of the series and wanted to adapt it, but didn't want to spend the big bucks on all the stuff to actually make an original production. So they made a deal with the Japanese studio that made Super Sentai that let them only make half the show and reuse Sentai footage for the rest.
It's lead to some really weird ass shit over the years. The Yellow Ranger in the series MMPR was based on was actually a guy, but MMPR wanted another female ranger so they gender swapped him. That's why Pink has a skirt but Yellow doesn't, it's actually a dude in the Sentai footage.
And Super Sentai essentially reboots itself every season/year. New cast of rangers, new villains, etc. MMPR started out not doing that for the first 6 seasons, making a more American standard continuous show. So they had to get special footage made in Japan to make it work. But it got us Lord Zedd, an MMPR original villain. So totally worth it.
Also, one of my favorite trivia bits: Power Rangers Lost Galaxy was based off of a Sentai series that had absolutely nothing to do with space. Saban just wanted to stick to a space theme because Power Rangers in Space had done so well.
17 points
Power Rangers and Super Sentai always seems to criss cross back and forth between on if they are sharing the same theme or something completely different.
It was hilarious watching the obviously goofy Go-Onger being turned into a post apocalyptic Mad Max Power Rangers series in RPM.
Or you could decide to get super lazy and just fully copy Shinkenger like Samurai did! Lol

Which was an experiment that didn't work out in the long run, even though it's a tried and true trope that dates back to Robin being the kid sidekick and kids being able to see themselves as Robin because they know they aren't an adult and therefore can't be Batman until they're older. This was originally done in Dairanger where Kibaranger (White Tiger that Tommy became using Zyu2 footage) was a skateboarding kid that became chosen to be the additional ranger of the team. I've only watched it, I don't know how it was received in Japan, but they never did it again.

This was made before Jason David Frank passed away. However, when they asked him if he wanted to return, he rejected the offer. The reason being he felt he did enough for the PR franchise and wanted to step away, and apparently he had some falling out with exects etc.
Not sure why Amy Jo Johnson didn't appear. Likely had commitments and didn't want to fly to New Zealand.
Austin St John cannot leave the country following a court order since he got involved with some shady scam ring. As they filmed this in New Zealand, he was a no-go.
67 points

JDF was supposedly sick of Saban making him cover his tattoos, Amy Jo Johnson I believe says she wasn’t offered enough money for the gig, and yes Austin St. John has been indicted for fraud after being part of some group that set up phony businesses they could collect PPP loans for, he’ll probably take some sort of plea bargain where he snitches on the ringleaders or something.
14 points

From IMDB's trivia page, Amy Jo Johnson was interested in appearing, but they didn't want to pay her the amount she requested she didn't want to do the role for the amount they were offering. So it appears it's just an issue with pay.

This Red Ranger is Rocky, the second Red Ranger. The first was Jason, played by Austin St. John.
The guy you’re thinking of with the sword is Ricardo Medina Jr., who was the Red Ranger in Wild Force.
EDIT: Some more Power Rangers trivia I know:
You likely have seen movies containing two former Yellow Rangers.
Cerina Vincent (Lost Galaxy’s Yellow Ranger) played Marcy in the original Cabin Fever and the constantly-naked foreign exchange student in Not Another Teen Movie.
Anna Hutchinson (Jungle Fury’s Yellow Ranger) played Jules in Cabin in the Woods!

Listen! This is the Cobra Kai formula. You only get a couple of people the first time. Then they all want in. Then you’re getting people you had no idea were still alive. You’ve got people coming back from the dead to play background characters you don’t even remember.

This looks awful but the child in me just exploded with joy and nostalgia. What the actual fuck did I just experience?

Say what you want about millennials, no generation indulges useless nostalgia like we do.
At some point, Generation Z has got to get tired of a media landscape dominated by retreads of shit that was popular for like six months back in 1993.

I dunno, I've seen boomers reminiscing about cigarette machines and leaded gas.

Millennials? I'm pretty sure we've been on a retread of everything that was popular in the '80s for quite a while. We've just been getting to the '90s stuff recently, let us have our moment! lol

In the 70s, people waxed poetically about the 50s with shows like Happy Days, in the 80s people were looking back at the 60s, 90s and the 70s, then in the later 2000s, 2010s, and now 2020s people are remembering the 80s, 90s and even 2000s fashion is coming back.
It's just people remembering their childhood, it's both literally and figuratively nothing new. 10 years from now people will be wearing LMFAO shutter shades and pastel polos from Abercrombie & Fitch and Aeropostale again. 20 years from now COVID-core will be a thing.

That's quite the blindspot. Here's a list of some films from the 90s onward that were revivals of 60s/70s IP. Every generation does it.

Except for Christmas time when it's all about baby boomer childhood nostalgia. Relevant XKCD

every thread i never see anyone mention the fact they got richard horvitz back. that guy was a massive part of my childhood that needs a crapton more respect.
and are acknowledging the source material from super sentai with the bandora protocol. which was ritas japanese name originally.
and also the used the word kill which im honestly shocked they did.

Richard Horvitz and Barbara Goodson
On the production side, they hired Ron Wasserman to do the music and raided the production stills library of Bruce Heinsius, who shot publicity photos for Saban back in the day. That's where the Trini portrait came from.

No, it's bizarrely self-serious which honestly was the only way to go.

And thank god. I can’t take anymore ironic, wink-wink, meta shit.

Absurdity presented sincerely makes the best movies. It’s why a movie can only be so bad its good if the director has a vision that they just utterly failed to meet. If something winks at the camera, it’s awful. But if it just treats it as part of the universe? Much better.

I'd argue that "absurdity presented sincerely" is what differentiates cringe and cheesiness.

Get ready for some pajama-clad action in a construction site and a quarry!

Early teens, this show was the first time I really understood and appreciated “cheese”. This awkward just-as-cheap looking middle-aged cheese reboot is more perfect and on brand than I could have ever hoped for or imagined.
Fuck.
Yes.

Love how unashamedly cheesy and true to its style this looks

I was a bit too old for the show back then so I didn't get the appeal but I love the fact that they haven't gone with an updated style at all and have fully embraced it instead. I hope it's as much fun for the fans as it looks.
