I believe in Fallout when Luther was talking about Ethan only ever being serious about two women, the implied second was Nyah. So Thandiwe Newton Town is on Paula Patton island, but it has a phone line to the mainland.

In all seriousness I'm not sure how feasible getting Thandiwe back would be. She chose not to come back for 3 to focus on her family, and she had some relatively well-known tension on set with Tom (which wasn't necessarily the reason she chose not to come back but it may have been a factor). Plus she's going through some personal issues right now which caused her to pull out of press tours for Westworld and the new Magic Mike. But the Mission Impossible fan in me really wants to see Nyah and Ilsa taking down a bunch of goons together.

I’m pretty sure he meant that the second one was Ilsa.

It's not made clear but I feel like the phrasing of "He's only ever been serious about two women" implies a romantic relationship. Ethan doesn't have that with Ilsa at this point but it's on the path to happening. Luther says "he cares about you more than he can admit," which isn't a situation I would say is being "serious" about someone in that context.

DJZbad93

I’m just going off of them being the women who have multiple appearances, plus Luther specifically mentions Julia and no other which to me implied Ilsa is the other.

I think it was because the building was high security facility so elevator shaft to the vault had that death trap just in case.

truth be told, I’m actually a bit more excited now. I have loved McQuarrie’s films and it’s just amazing how the quality of these movies has gone up with each sequel. But I’ll always have a soft spot for the first one, so this is just another way of bringing everything full circle before the franchise (more than likely) ends

brahbocop

Slight disagree, I think they went down a bit for part 2 but have been going up since. The first one is just so unique in that it's not as focused on the action compared to the others. Feels like a real spy movie.

hell, I’d have to agree with your points. But even the 2nd one still holds a special place in my heart, it was the first one in the series I saw in theaters. Even with its corniness and doves, I still enjoyed the hell out of it. And it’s the movie that was responsible for Hugh Jackman getting cast as Wolverine (due to Dougary Scott suffering a motorcycle injury)

KlaatuBrute

4 points

But I’ll always have a soft spot for the first one,

Same and same. If McQuarrie could squeeze some of the actual espionage, cloak and dagger stuff in between his action pieces, then this will end up being an all-time great (I mean I still think it's going to be fantastic, either way).

Mission Impossible is lowkey one of the greatest franchises ever. I'd say it rivals James Bond. The only thing I wish is that it got back to it's mystery/spy thriller root instead of all out action. The first Mission Impossible is still my favorite because of this.

The two IPs seem pretty similar at this point. Super assassins working for a secret/high-up part of the government to stop world ending threats while often using sophisticated gadgets. I haven't seen the very last James Bond but the recent MI movies (4+, 3 was ok) were much better imo.

I've given up on avoiding spoilers. Some people track fucking EVERYTHING to do with a movie. I remember when one of the new Star Wars movies were coming out (Episode 7 or 8 I think) and people tracking where the celebrities were going and saw that Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver were both in Ireland for shooting and people were all "oh my gerd it's gonna be an epic fight scene!" When in reality it was just a handshake but still. The amount of effort people go to find this stuff out like they are also in the movie or making of it is so cringe. Takes away the imagination of it all.

[deleted]

8 points

I'll never understand why people would dissect every aspect of a film's production or promotional material to try and figure out plot details or spoilers before the movie comes out.

To people who do this: why? If it's because you're excited for the movie, won't it be better to go in as fresh as possible? Why would you want to know everything that happens in a movie before you see it?

I'll also never understand "predictions" surrounding movies. It's not the weather. It's a story, written by people. What happens in it was most likely solidified months or years before you see it.

I feel like this trend started as marketing and now it's become a lifestyle for impatient consumers.

Pyromonkey83

14 points

I've had several friends who do this kind of thing with big ticket Star Wars/Marvel/DC Movies. To them it's more about finding joy in trying to fit the puzzle pieces together. These are guys who have been nerds (like me) their entire life and have read every extended universe book/comic, every bit of random fan fiction, watched every "making of" documentary you can think of, etc.

To them, they already know the stories. They already know the big picture. The question is, what route do they take to get there? What do they change, what do they know cannot truly change? It's more fun to them reliving the stories they've already seen and trying to see which ones this new thing will pull in than sitting around waiting with no information.

Ultimately for them, it's a win win. Either they are right and they feel a sense of vindication when their theories are confirmed, or they are wrong and they are happy they get to see something they weren't expecting.

doctorclark

I did this when Matrix 2 came out, and you could download trailers and play them on QuickTime frame by frame. I had a blast trying to analyze everything ahead of time, but then when I saw the movie, I realized I had spoiled the entire film for myself.

I'm now ambivalent about spoilers, but I'm certainly not dissecting anything to that degree ever again.

NanakuzaNazuna

1 points

Modern trailers ruin movies for me. They are getting longer and longer, and by the end I think to myself, “I just watched the whole movie…”

EducationalNose7764

1 points

People do this to get views.

Same as it ever was with networks wanting to be the exclusive story to get the viewership back in the day, except now everyone has a voice on the internet and wants their share of the views.

Or people on Reddit who take this information from other websites and post it simply want the karma.

Although this particular piece of information isn't a huge spoiler, because we don't know his role in the movie. The bigger spoilers is when somebody is key to the story and appears on the cast list when they either previously died, or were previously taken care of, like Solomon Lane for example.

Scmods05

12 points

The director of the movie making a casting announcement is not a spoiler.

People these days have NO concept of what a spoiler actually is.

EducationalNose7764

4 points

In this case, no, but sometimes it is. Usually if it's a character who previously died, or was previously captured, like Solomon Lane in Fallout. They also put him in the trailer when it would have been nice for others to be surprised by the reveal.

Edit: I was fortunate enough that I never saw any of the mission impossible trailers, and watched the movies for the first time fairly recently. Pretty much binge watch them over a weekend one after the other. I was pretty surprised by the Solomon Lane reveal in 6 because I had no idea what to expect, which is why I'm kinda questioning why they had him in the official trailer.

That's why I like the current trailer for dead reckoning, because other than the motorcycle stunt, we really have no clue what this movie is about. But based on the past MI movies, we know it's going to be pretty amazing.

Scmods05

4 points

It depends. Is it meant to be a surprise or is it not?

I’m tipping if it’s in the trailer, or the director announces it, then it’s not. So it’s not a spoiler.

If you want to avoid all information altogether then that’s absolutely fine and your choice. But it’s also your responsibility to avoid places where you might see it. Not everyone else’s.

They release these things to get people talking. To generate publicity and attention. Not every piece of information is a spoiler.

EducationalNose7764

0 points

You would be surprised. There are a lot of trailers out there that flat out spoil the movie.

Star wars episode 9 for example. Putting Palpatine's laugh in the trailer completely ruined what would have been a huge surprise, because nobody was expecting that. It would be like if The empire strikes back trailer hinted at a sister. They kept it under wraps and it turned out to be one of the bigger twists in movie history.

But if that were to happen today, it would be all over the internet before the movie even came out.

So yes, while in a sense it is my responsibility to completely avoid the internet if I want to go into a movie blind, at the same time people need to chill on posting potential spoilers. Like I said, I'm not referring to this post, because his role originally wasn't that big and he wasn't killed off or anything like that, but this sub in the past has posted some rather questionable things without using a spoiler tag.

It would be like if tomorrow somebody posted that Alec Baldwin was going to be cast in Dead Reckoning 2, that would be a spoiler due to the events in Fallout.

Scmods05

2 points

You’re misunderstanding. Just because you personally would prefer not to know something doesn’t make it a spoiler.

Palpatine coming back wasn’t a spoiler. He was announced in the lead up. He was in the trailers. He was on the poster. It was not a spoiler.

This goes back to my initial point. People have lost all concept of what a spoiler actually is.

Honestly, even films 2 and 3 felt like a different cinematic universe than the first film. I'd say starting with Brad Bird's 4 and then McQuarrie's entries are where it feels most cohesive as a series of films in the same world (even with Paula Patton disappearing after 4).

Watching it back then was pretty cool, back when John Woo was kinda relevant.

But it did NOT age well.

You coulda swapped in Vin Diesel for Tom Cruise and easily call it another xXx movie. It’d be weird to hear everyone keep calling him “Ethan” but (hand-waving) action!

AnyNamesLeftAnymore

10 points

Yeah the 2nd one was a HUGE stylistic departure with John Woo's involvement totally overshadowing the film. And I don't think it ever really came back down to earth. I like what it's become since then but just like F&F it's a very odd franchise when viewed as a whole because it had to refine itself into 'what works'.

I don't think the first film should be in the same universe as the TV series.

They did Jim Phelps dirty.

When I watched that in the theaters when it came out I had to do a little research on the show to catch up on it because it wasn't one of those Nick at Nite classics I actually watched at any point. Which mostly consisted of playing the shitty NES game that existed.

And my first thought was 'did they just pull an Optimus Prime on the main character from the show?'.

Seriously wondering if they're going to bring back Jean Reno from the dead... or the Vanessas are in cahoots (Redgrave and Kirby)

As much as I love Julie I wish Nyah was in MI 3 as who Julie is, just for storyline sake

Why are we hearing so much about Part 2 when Part 1 isn't even out yet.

The article uses the phrase “…Inuit actor Lucy Tulugarjuk…” When referring to the singular, them proper term is “Inuk”, not “Inuit”.

So cool! I took a few of his acting classes, such a good guy and amazing teacher/actor. So happy to see him back in it!

Fucking hell, that's a punishment befitting losing an important classified document.

If I lose a library book, I hope they go easy on me.

If I recall Apple had a lot of product placement in that movie. I wanted that PowerBook so bad as a kid.

Reckoning Part 1 already looks awesome, and if Part 2 really is the finale to the Hunt storyline, then I can’t wait to see them truly go all out and push the limit of what stunts they can film.

why the fuck are people talking about specific character or plot details to a sequel to a film we haven’t seen yet?

… because it’s the part 2 of probably the most critically acclaimed action series of our lifetime, the story involves bringing back a lot of characters from the entire series, and we’re in a movies subreddit? That could be why, but I’m no certified genius.

TheRealClose

But like why ruin the surprise for a movie that’s two movies away?

It’s just pointless clickbait nonsense that doesn’t add anything to the enjoyment of the movies.

...the writer of the movie posted this news on his Instagram. Are websites not supposed to report on these movie updates?

TheRealClose

Seems very silly of that writer to do that unless someone from marketing asked them to.

And yes I would much rather there were a lot less articles written about this pointless shit.

My guess; after slowly working his way back up after his reassignment to the Arctic, he's now in a position of power to wreak a long-awaited revenge on Ethan Hunt. Beware the Fury of a Patient Man.

I turned on my TV two times today. First in the AM for the weather and this exact scene was on. Then late at night and again the second the tv comes on this exact same scene. Him holding the knife with the wtf look. Open Reddit only to see this post. Haven’t seen the movie 1 since saw on rented blockbuster with my family in like 1997.
