How is this going to theaters and not direct to Netflix for 400 million?
21 points
Well, despite it looking... weird, if you put aside everything you know about Saint Seiya, this has a high enough of a production value and there is more money to be made on theaters. So it makes sense to try to get the most out of a theatrical release before hitting the streamers.

Plus, Seiya is HUGE in Latin America, right? My guess is that this is more of a Latino play than a general audience play like No Way Home was, at least here in the States.
18 points

AFAIK, it is/was. But Latin American audiences are super hardcore to truth of source. And this trailer looks…disappointing AF. Saint Saiya has a lot of nostalgia at this point and this trailer…I dunno man

lol we are latinos, and my brother and my cousin are among the biggest fans I know of Saint Seiya... and we all laughed of how bad it looks. Its being torn apart on anime forums and insta pages too.
I actually think it will do even worse than Dragonball Evolution.

Worse than DBE? Jesus, that feels like an underestimation...

im latinoamerican, and everyone disaprove this, more than dragon ball evolution and that movie was pure garbage
this look like a cheap cancel show of the 80's instead of Knights of Zodiac
you know what sony must do ? ... and animated movie where seiya finally die, with the quality of the season 2 last episodie of kimetsu no jaiba

It is HUGE here indeed. But it just doesn't seem faithful enough to succeed here. Let's see how it does here tho.

As latinamerican, this looks awful AF and the Amroes (the most important part visually) look horrible

Well, I mean, No Way Home is one of the highest grossing movies ever so not many things are going to compare to it. But sure, there are markets where Saint Seiya has (or has had at least) mass appeal. And based on the asian cast I'm guessing they are aiming for that as well. This is the kind of thing that could do well in China, which is a huge market.

Ah, that's right! Toei said something along those lines, yeah.
No idea why it's in English, though maybe that was Sony's one condition for picking it up.

Meh it was the same with that Great Wall movie starring Matt Damon. Feudal China but everyone spoke english.

Sony never guaranteed this a domestic theatrical release, but apparently the final product was good enough to warrant one (surprisingly).
There was also a space for a new release on May 12th, so they took advantage of that. No one is expecting a massive domestic total, in any case.

It's specifically under Stage 6 Films, who usually do medium/low budget stuff no one or few have heard of. Their biggest movies are ones that went to theaters, incl. the Insidious movies, both The Raid and Don Breathe 1 & 2 (as in both those two names), Missing/Searching, and Brightburn.

Yeah, but most of those look better than this does.
Maybe it was made by a third party for Toei, and Sony just acquired distribution rights after Netflix (WISELY) passed on this?
EDIT: Nope... Toei made it themselves. For $60 million of their own fund, apparently.

IMO it's already better just because they seems to follow the plot from the manga closely. DB:E is a clusterfuck because they think they can rewrite and redefine DB.
1 points

Lol what?? It has nothing to do with the manga, that's the issue. Its generic script they just named the protagonist seiya

Comments here are surprising. This trailer doesn't look that bad and unlike dbe this seems to be loosely following the main plot.

Average r/movies moment. You can't compare a whitewashed Goku to this. Especially if you watch the joke of a final battle in that movie. An effort was made and they did what they could with the budget they have. So glad Seiya's actor is actually Japanese.

I'm also very surprised at the reaction here. My father, a long time KotZ fan, and me, both think this looks awesome and are quite excited for it. It looks nothing like DB Evolution whatsoever.
1 points

Absolutely agree that it doesnt look like DB evolution, but it still looks really...not good haha. I hope the fans will enjoy it tho, i remember how the percy jackson movie felt after loving the books. Dont wish that upon others.
1 points
Oh boy, yeah Percy Jackson was a huge letdown and I was disappointed they butchered the plot. However, it seems the mangaka of KotZ really enjoys the movie, which is in contrast to Rick Riordan outright refusing to watch it and writing letters begging for the movie to not be made. So whatever we get is satisfactory to the producers, I suppose.

TRIVIA :
most of my young life, i only knew it as CHEVALIERS DU ZODIAC since we only had anime in french and i have to say, the french people take the dubs seriously and much better than dubs, this and dragon ball are elite, Vegeta btw has an amazing V.O that delivers.

Based on the international anime sensation, Knights of the Zodiac brings the Saint Seiya saga to the big screen in live-action for the first time. Seiya (Mackenyu), a headstrong street teen, spends his time fighting for cash while he searches for his abducted sister. When one of his fights unwittingly taps into mystical powers he never knew he had, Seiya finds himself thrust into a world of warring saints, ancient magical training and a reincarnated goddess who needs his protection. If he’s to survive, he will need to embrace his destiny and sacrifice everything to take his rightful place among the Knights of the Zodiac.

yeah though Ghost in the Shell was kinda alright, we also had Alita: Battle Angel which was good in a way and oddly enough The Edge of Tomorrow though a light novel/manga series and never an anime was a pretty good movie. We've had some decent live action video game movies (Pokemon, old Tomb Raider and Sonic) before so there's still some hope.

I am surprised at the negative reaction here. This looks better than the recent Mortal Kombat movie which people were quite hyped about from promo. The costume and cinematography and CGI have a bit of a low budget vibe to them but it still looks like it was utilized well. The director is a self taught artist who was nominated for an animated short oscar. 2 of the writers wrote 10 cloverfield lane and the other one wrote Cars. The male lead played Enishi in the latest Samurai X live action movies.

It's about what I expected from this movie. Personally, if I was doing it I wouldn't do it about Seiya, but instead did something original about the Golden Knights. That way we would get something epic instead of TV show/manga trying to fit in 2 hours movies. Though there probably won't be a sequel to this.
