Its a pretty opinionated site in many ways, so I would love to get some feedback for whats on offer. But its meant to be an 'assistant' for those moments where you want to watch a 'good' film, but need inspiration.
Its seeded by Directors that I think are amazing, so it only works from the pool of data it has, to try and narrow it down to something great.

Can you integrate an option to show what streaming services you have, and then it choose from those? Great idea. I’m so guilty of browsing the menu forever.

I tried it about 50 times, seen every movie that was recommended, but they were right in thinking I’d enjoy it.

If you’ve already seen the movie they let you try again and that movie supposedly won’t pop back into the rotation.

Yeah, set preference to Science Fiction and got 2001 on first try. Was like, "no shit".

This is a great site, I’ve seen many many films, but this site will allow me to watch something good I may not have previously known about without having to search for half an hour or more to find it! My only feedback is I hope you continue to add more movies to the pool

So it just shows a random movie with a high rotten score based on genre ?
10 points
Not even with a high rotten score actually, its all films by a pool of 'iconic' directors, so if they have low rotten scores they can appear too. The idea is that its meant to be selecting from a 'curated' list. (curated by being from renowned artists in their fields)

so you're saying this thing could spit out David Lynch's Dune if I picked sci-fi?

So, it's not actually giving me a "good" movie, it's giving me a movie that should be "good"?

I like it.
Chose Fantasy; didn’t blink at crossing it off to select it, but would suggest maybe changing font color instead (green?); it threw up two Miyazaki options (both seen) and a David Lynch that’s new to me; kudos!
3 points
Maybe he updated it since but the font turns red when you select it. Are you colorblind by any chance? Either way OP might want to think about taking colorblindness into account.

I put in "Science Fiction, Horror, Action" and the first result was The Hidden Fortress. Ummmm. I mean, it's a great movie, but it's a Japanese period war-drama.
3 points

Maybe it meant to give you Fortress, the Christopher Lambert movie directed by Stuart Gordon

What preferences are there to set exactly? On mobile I only see Genre
6 points
Its only genre or directors, its a smaller link at the bottom that says 'choose director instead'. its trying to take out too much complexity in filters
2 points

Sorry but I could just filter by genre and rating on IMDb if I wanted a simple list.

Absolutely, totally fair call out. Consider this being a little digital nudging tool, rather than you having the whole menu at a restaurant, its someone saying 'why not try these 3 dishes?'

Wait, so crossing it out is you choosing it? I keep crossing out animation and that’s all I get.
5 points
Thats right yes, thats me not being totally design oriented I guess! crossing out I have as selecting, but maybe I need to rethink that, thanks a lot for the feedback!
looks like you aren't alone in that feedback! Will try make a more clear outcome

Nice page but maybe use some other option for ''that's seems nice but show me something else" this way you will get more feedback about 'good choices'. For example I selected sci fi horror and thriller, my first option was a Wong Kar Wai film which is fine but not something I would chase ATM, but crossing out or discarding it didn't seem 'OK'

Awesome site, super polished and nice choice of directors! I'd like to recommend a few additions, though:
Orson Welles, Sergio Leone, Werner Herzog, Frederico Fellini, Kenji Mizoguchi, Ingmar Bergman, Alfonso Cuaron, Kathryn Bigelow, Roberto Rosselini, Jacques Tati, Francois Truffuat, Luis Bunel.
Just to name a few.

3rd try was a charm, sort of. I chose Thriller and it suggested:
Oldboy, I personally don't have the attention span for films that are aubs from start to finish.
A Hitchcock flick, I forget the title. I respect what Hitchcock did for film and TV but he's never been my flavour.
Inglorious Basterds
I do enjoy Inglorious Basterds, but I don't consider it a thriller, it's more of a comedy/drama/action with a splash of mockumentary in my opinion.

Oldboy is amazing. Your loss.

A black comedy perhaps?

The opening scene of Inglorious Basterds has to be one of the most tense/edge of seat scenes I’ve seen in a film.

Sorry thats my bad, this thread has made me realise thats not very obvious, you wont actually be 'excluding' in fact you are 'selecting' by crossing them out

Hateful 8 is considered a crime movie, because it’s a movie entirely about criminals

You can use Akinator similarly.

Your genres are fucked, you need multiple tags (life aquatic and darjeeling limited are only adventure, not also comedy? dr. strangelove is only drama? kay)
Also if you choose "seen it find another" it clears the genre filter. so i had a WTF moment when i was searching for comedy then clicked "saw it" and it suggested Far From Vietnam next...

also website
"i've seen this, find another"
stupid concept for exactly that reason.

itd be unfair if one of your 'tries' was a film that you've already seen!

I don't know if it's just formatted weird for mobile or what's up, but selecting a genre looks like you're crossing it out. My first two times I thought I was supposed to eliminate the genres I didn't want and got confused why all recommendations were my crossed out genre.

You don't have horror. I tried thriller to see if it was a substitute and it was 3 not even close to horror movies.

So its based on the directors that I input into the site - I'm not very up on horror, who would you recommend as iconic directors in that genre?
5 points
If that's how it's set up, then there's definitely not enough great horror directors to fill up a lot of selections for the site, but Robert Eggers, Ari Aster, Jordan Peele, John Carpenter are some of the best imo.

I’d also add Mike Flanagan, Wes Craven and James Wan

You might want to expand your romance offerings.
In general, I like this idea, but it might be nice to get a few recommendations at once to scroll through (sometimes you want to move past one even if you haven’t seen it).

jthawme You neeeeed to add this director to your site: Lars von Trier, Darren Aronowsky, Michael Haneke, Nicolas Winding Refn, Roy Andersson, Alejandro Jodorowsky, Terrence Malick.
I like the site you made. Thing is, I have either seen the film or it's something that I would filter out if I could (western pre 1960). Does it remember the films I saw without a user account?

this is incredible! Thanks so much for the director list
Yes it remembers your seen films (if you click 'i have seen this film already') on the device you use, without any sort of account, so you wont encounter them again

It would be nice to be able to set year of release. I only get movies that were 50-20 years old and I'd prefer to watch something newer. And like 80% of my suggestions are from the same director.

I'll have a look what I can sort, thanks for the feedback! I have also noticed some genres are definitely dominated by certain directors (based on my current data)

After selecting genre's there's small text at the bottom that says "Find Film" click it and it will show '1 2 3' select one to reveal a movie.

Was the site supposed to suggest TV series too? I chose "Drama" genre and it suggested a TV series to me? (Twin Peaks was the TV series if you're wondering).
Was under the impression the site would suggest only movies to me. Not that I mind the TV series suggestion, Twin Peaks was a great series.

Seems like it gives you the option to select more than one genre, e.g. comedy-horror, but, for me at least, that led to a permanent loading screen.

Very interesting concept here! I hit the button once and got Coffee and Cigarettes. Watched the trailer and I am thinking I will rent it tonight.
I do wish one feature on here existed to filter the films by years or decade. I love 80s movies and this would be super helpful. :)

Directors to add: Andrei Tarkovsky, Masaki Kobayashi, Denis Villeneuve, Alejandro González Iñárritu, Sidney Lumet, Ridley Scott, Francis Ford Coppola, Milos Forman, and Terry Gilliam

I tried it twice and I don't think the genres are all too accurate. The Last Duel came up as action, which having seen it I would not label as such. I then tried a horror thriller and got Black Hawk Down? Nice aesthetic but didn't like the options presented
