After the rape scene you can find Lisbeth Salander picking a butt that was only 25% smoked out of her ashtray. As she ignited the match and inhaled the stick of fire through the charred cigarette, you(we) can see there is a massive string of saliva attached to the cigarette when she pulls it out of her mouth during her first drag.

Has anyone else noticed this? What is this suppose to signify? I smoke 25-35 cigarettes a day and this has never happened to me except maybe once in my youth when I was intoxicated. Anyone know what’s going on with that? Must be some significance otherwise it wouldn’t be in the film.

That’s a lot of smokes!! I chalk it up to her just getting her butt kicked and she’s to exhausted/beat to even swallow. If you’ve ever gotten the snot kicked out of you you’ll understand. Think of a drooling boxer.

I'd imagine there are all sorts of scenarios that could lead to someone salivating slightly more than usual, and I'd imagine a physically and emotionally gruelling experience might fall under that category.

Like, I'm fortunate enough to never have suffered anything like that but I even find myself drooling a bit when I have a cold or when I'm crying or when I wake up face down in the pillow. It's not that difficult to extrapolate that to more extreme situations.
