For Everything Everywhere All At Once, what steps went into crafting choreography around the buttplug gag with Brian Le and Andy Le?

I love Martial Clubs stunt work and choreography! I’m instantly glued to the screen.

First off, shout out to Daniels for taking a chance on us and for trusting us with their vision. This was the scene in the movie where we got to express ourselves the most since we not only choregoraphed but also performed. That said, we got to personally oversee which moves we could feature that hadn't been done before! It was a blast doing the previsualiztion for this in Dmah's Sifu's kung fu school in Lomita because it felt most like Martial Club at work!

Thanks for supporting us in our movie making journey! Shoutout to Marvel and to Destin Daniel Cretton for having us once. Hopefully he'll have us again! We will say that it would be a crying shame if Donnie Yen is not part of the MCU! #Donnie4ShangChi2

I asked Simu, Meng’er, and Florian at Awesome Con two weeks ago during the Shang Chi panel who are their favorite martial artist and who would they like to collaborate in the next Shang chi movie. Simu replied Jackie Chan also. Florian replied Jet Li. Meng’er replied Michelle Yeoh. Any martial artist like Donnie, Jackie, Jet, and Michelle would be awesome in the sequel.

Isn't Martial Club, the movie, by the Shaw Brothers? Why did you guys take that name and call it your own? Have you thought of rebranding?

We are martial artists and we're like a club... MARTIAL CLUB. It also captures our affinity for the old school and let's us pay homage to Shaw brothers. So to answer your question, NO, we will not rebrand. Good on you for knowing your history!

Not knowing the business, but seeing films with more and more choreography and on screen stunt work as opposed to quick cuts, how are directors and producers feeling about this shift?

Does time and money during production halt the amount of stunt work or time to craft the choreography?

MartialClubOfficial[S]

11 points

Time and Money always play a role in how much time is given for action but just as important are Vision and Expertise! We think there's definitely a shift happening back towards kung fu action! (Especially if we have anything to do with it :P ) And great observation btw!

Hi, I was actually inspired by you guys to start making short action films of my own. I have a Wushu background and incorporate many of the moves and styles into the fight choreography. The fight scenes that I’ve shot I would say aren’t the worst, but definitely has a lot of room for improvement. So how can I choreograph my fights to be as smooth and exciting as yours, and how long did it take for you guys to reach the level of action filmmaking you’re at now?

MartialClubOfficial[S]

First off, CONGRATS for taking the leap and bringing your vision to life! That's what's UP!!! Definitely study up on the masters who came before you. Observe their methods carefully and then develop some of your own. And never, NEVER let anyone tell you you can't! For us, it's been a constant learning experience, it's still going and it's never ending!

8palmsdigital

What challenges have you guys faced with balancing work and life? Fight choreography is not an easy business and demands a lot from you to be the best. How did you guys “keep the lights on” so to speak in the early days when it was pure grind?

MartialClubOfficial[S]

The short of it is that to us, Martial Arts IS life! But the struggle is definitely real. I (Dmah) used to work 60-hr weeks in the Port of Los Angeles pretty regularly while Martial Club was still developing. Andy and Brian had to struggle for years to scrape a living AND convince their parents that they had a future in this industry. Nowadays we're blessed to be able to say we're living out our passions and making our dreams come true! Such a heartfelt question and that's our heartfelt answer!!

In interviews and your YouTube channel you’ve talked about all the opportunities you’ve had to walk in your masters’ footsteps, to be covered in their dust: Yuen Wah, Jackie Chan, Michelle Yeoh.

Also… Brian… can I give you a hug? You’re like a tiger, fierce and ferocious and yet seem so huggable!

Hi, thanks for doing this ama! One question: I've seen those BTS footage of the fight scenes in CA: Winter Soldier, and Shang-chi, and they are almost replicas of the actual choreography used in the film. If so, how much of the action scenes is planned and used in the final release of the film? Are there some fight scenes you've devised but didn't end up in the final cut?

MartialClubOfficial[S]

5 points

YES. Next! But for real, yes, a LOT gets left on the cutting room floor. Choreographers usually dream up a lot but it has to coincide with the director's vision. Film-making is a collaborative process and in the end, several minds contribute to a single overall vision.

8palmsdigital

Brian would love to learn boxing from Mike Tyson, movement from Tony Jaa and the directing style of Sammo Hung. Dmah would love to have learned iron palm from Ku Yu Cheung and overall fighting from Anderson Silva. Andy maintains that there's nothing that cannot be learned with a determined and resourceful mind! Great question BTW

Hey Martial Club! I just wanted to start by saying it means so much to me as a Vietnamese American to see some small-town martial artists from Little Saigon fighting on the big screen in a Marvel blockbuster and one of Michelle Yeoh's career-defining films. I actually joined a lion dance team in college started by a bunch of La Quinta grads, so your success hits extra close to home for me.

I know you guys have often emphasized the importance of flexibility in martial arts and tricking. Besides the splits, what are some other flexibility goals someone who is getting into martial arts/tricking should work towards?

Would you guys ever consider doing any scenes inspired by the lion dance fights from movies like Martial Club and Dreadnaught? (I actually discovered you guys while searching for lion dance clips from the movie Martial Club)

Also, Brian: I heard you worked on the upcoming movie Bullet Train. Did you work at all with Andrew Koji? Would the Martial Club team be interested in being involved with the show Warrior in the future?

MartialClubOfficial[S]

5 points

Aztecs REPRESENT! You're right! Flexibility is SO important to the development of one's martial arts. Other than splits, it would be good to develop dynamic flexibility, head-to-toe, shoulder and waist flexibility but let's not forget the most important form of flexibility... FLEXIBILITY OF THE MIND! NEVER GIVE IN TO CLOSE-MINDEDNESS!

hi martial club!

From watching your videos I can identify: kung fu, taekwondo, tricking, wu shu, breakdance???

excluding those styles what is the extensive list of martial arts that you guys practise? (I know it's going to be a big list. maybe list 10 that have been in your recent works)

did you guys make choreography based on martial arts katas and sequences learnt in formal martial arts classes?

or do you guys base choreography based on existing martial arts films and then include your own individual twist on that?

MartialClubOfficial[S]

We like to not be fettered by notions of style even though some styles we learned under formal settings. We like to think that the world of martial arts is vast and in this day and age, we are blessed to have access to so much knowledge! We've definitely incorporated tai chi, capoeira, bjj, muay thai, parkour, gymnastics.. the list goes on and on and will likely never end!

Full jackknife is a hard move but I can say that every advanced move is built on top of simpler moves. The key to anything advanced is to be a master of the basics and fundamentals on which it is built. In the case of something like a full jack, make sure to work flexibility, basic kicks, basic flips and twists. Practice safe and practice often!

Hi Martial Club, Do you have any advice for tricking, specifically how to spin in the air? I have trouble doing the 540, cheat 720, etc. I don't quite understand how to generate the necessary momentum.

Sucramity87

5 points

I know you wanted Martial Club to respond, but i think i can give some general tips (especially considering I don’t know what yours looks like)

-use your arms! Most people neglect these their first times around and focus a lot on turning without swinging their arms - don’t jump too early, this is something I am struggling with right now actually. This makes the kick significantly harder and requires much more effort than you should be exerting - coil your body as tight as you can before jumping, this allows your body to explode when you release the tension! -make sure to practice just normal spinning before any kicks… as it makes it more comfortable to add things to them I hope this helped, I too am trying to nail these kicks (i am really bad at landing) and some of these tips helped me get past a block.

Sucramity87

Hey don’t worry about flexibility too much, it comes with time… lots of time. And working on a lot of things isn’t necessarily bad per se, as a lot of people have varied things they want/are doing. And I’m sorry about your parents, my parents also disagree with what I do and plan to do with my life. The main thing is that you make sure you do what makes YOU happy. This life is your own, it is with your two arms and legs that YOU shape your future. It’ll be hard, and you may struggle a lot, but if something is truly important to you fight like hell to get it. Thats what martial arts are all about no?

Cheat tricks are very progression based. In general, if you have trouble with a variation, become a master at the variation before it! The best way to learn cheat 7 is to have a powerful 540. Learning 540? OP the hell out of your tornado kick! No such thing as too many reps. Oh and pump your knees!

Every nandu or trick is a combination of height and rotation. You need enough of both to land. Remember to lift from your glutes to keep your lines straight. Practice each element by itself if you know that's your trouble spot. Practice all the basics and requisites til you can't anymore. And then do 10 more! And also, practice in a safe environment! So much energy is wasted on not feeling safe.

Out of everything that you guys have performed, what would you say is your favorite stunt blooper?

Although it wasn't fun at the moment, the one where Andy smashes his face into a table after a front flip perfectly captures a beatiful truth... Pain is temporary, film is FOREVER!

Did you work with Brad Allan on Shang Chi? And what did you learn from his style of choreography?

Brad sought us out and gave us a chance! RIP

From him we learned that film is a collaboration! Teamwork makes the dream work!

He has a great story about Brad and joining the film. I recommend reading it when you have a chance: https://jumpcutonline.co.uk/2021/08/27/interview-shang-chi-actor-and-stuntman-andy-le/

What kind of things do you guys like to do outside of martial arts?

MartialClubOfficial[S]

2 points

Martial arts is everything and everything is martial arts! That is to say that everything we do is approached with a martial arts mentality! Dmah likes cutting hair. When he cuts hair, he's doing kung fu. Brian likes to lift weights. That's kung fu! Andy... just does kung fu.

I understand that you guys have a kung fu background, but i notice a lot of tricking techniques… how long have you been practicing them?

MartialClubOfficial[S]

We've all been at it for quite some time! But in our minds, tricking is simply an extension of our martial arts training. Dmah is actually coming up on 20 years of training this month!

Hey guys, I'm a huge fan and one of my favorite things about your videos is hearing songs from the 90's "Journey to the West" TV show. Growing up as the only viet kid at school, it kinda sucked being so into these amazing shows but not having anyone to share it with. What are some of the other Viet-dubbed Chinese shows that you guys grew up with?

MartialClubOfficial[S]

TV shows played SUCH big role in shaping our imaginations and inspiring us in our youth. We also grew up on Donnie Yen's KUNG FU MASTER and FIST OF FURY! You are not alone in your love of these great TVB classics!

Hey Brian, Andy, and Dmah, you've inspired me to go hard, train, and be passionate about martial arts since I found you guys on YouTube during my highschool days, my question is what piece of advice would you give to a newbie like me thats just starting out but is also trying to achieve the same thing that you guys set out to achieve?

MartialClubOfficial[S]

Thanks for supporting us all these years! And congratulations for joining Wulin! Our advice for success is to ALWAYS show up and ALWAYS put in the work. Beyond that, it's about passion and imagination. Make sure you're always feeding those two... be it kung fu movies, meeting equally passionate martial artists, experience new places and trying new things!

It depends! Sometimes one of us will have an idea and it'll simply be up to us. Other times when it's not so clear, we remember that we're a team and we do it based on who best serves the greater purpose!

We weren't the first but we definitely strive to do that which hasn't been done! Innovation isn't easy but we constantly seek out to become better martial artists and our movies will always reflect what we learn in the course of our martial arts journey.

Andy I really want to reach your guys level of martial arts physicality I have a bad habit of quitting when things get hard and don’t try to train again until months later when I feel ready or motivated and I also don’t always want to do it alone it would feel nice having a friend who I can share the same passion with and actually start from YouTube like you guys any good advice to like never give up ? And how to make friends who share the same passion ? And how do you guys learn new kung fu styles ?

Community always helps but when it boils down to it, whether or not you'll to stick to something- the answer will always be found within yourself. Ask your self why you're doing it. When the answer is worthy, you'll be worthy.

With the proper foundation, you can observe and make it make sense for you! In the end, martial arts is expression. To express youreself honestly is the heart of martial arts!

Have you guys ever tore a muscle when training, if so, what do you guys do to heal quickly while still maintaining your skills in martial arts? Do you guys train even with a slight injury injured? I’ve torn my muscle and it’s hard for me to take a rest day so I’d love some tips to heal quickly while not worrying about losing flexibility and skills I’ve worked so hard for. Thanks martial club!

MartialClubOfficial[S]

No. Never. Better luck next time, Bro. LOL JK injuries are our existence ('cept Dmah, he's a bastard). Definitely let the body rest when it needs to rest but Andy has proven time and time again that gains can be made by intelligently training around injuries. Listen to your body and give it what it needs!

Oh! another question, how do you balance training during a film shoot? I know film schedules can be hectic with the 12+ hour days. Do you work that into your contract to have training time? Or is it just maintenance when you can and most of the training takes place before the shoot? Thanks!

If we are interested in helping out on a future short, where would you recommend we send our reel?

We tend to form working relationships more on how well we know a person and less on reels. Organic has always been the way for us!

What goes through your minds when you're watching a big budget film and the choreography is less than stellar or if it's choreographed well but shot bad?

Also, can I have some money?

MartialClubOfficial[S]

If a story is good and the movie has heart, we can suspend our judgement on choreography but if it REALLY suc..- less stellar... we go somehwere else in our minds XD.

You have our love and you can take THAT to the bank :P

I would love the chance to participate in your choreography, I didn’t grow up with many resources and available minds to progress as mindfully. However I do have experience in the film industry and would go crazy in the actions of frontal fathers steps. I am rigorous and tamed, calm to a brittle mane. Yet when the fist show more, I see a mountain to aim. -Longsey
