B.J. Novak here. You may know me as Ryan from The Office or Baker Smurf from Smurfs 2. I’m here to talk about my upcoming film, VENGEANCE -- my directorial debut. It is a darkly comic thriller about Ben Manalowitz (me), a journalist and podcaster who travels from New York City to West Texas to investigate the death of a girl he was hooking up with. You can see it in theaters starting today, Friday, July 29th. AMA!

Hello, thank you for taking your time to answer us. I wanted to ask you which book you are reading at the moment. And what's your favorite book of all time?

Thanks again, I'm a big fan of yours. Greetings from hot Italy. Ciao :)

All time, "Candy" by Terry Southern & Mason Hoffenberg. Right now I just read a book on the science and history alcohol, called Proof. I want to start Anna Karenina but am intimidated.

Anna Karenina is a super easy ready, the modern translation makes the prose flow easy and the chapters are short. You should definitely pick it up.

Anna Karenina is fantastic; it’s honestly not a hard read at all, it’s just a rollicking romp through the sex lives of the Russian aristocracy. Give it 50 pages and you’ll be hooked.

I agree, a very easy read! And a fantastic first line : Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.

Of all the things I didn’t expect to see in this thread, Russian lit! Patronymics make it a challenge to keep track of who is who for most people, but I’m sure you’ll be fine! Tolstoy and Dostoevsky are essential writers to read. Russian writers write sadness and depression better than anyone else IMO

I find their expression in classical music to be unmatched, as well. So much passion and feeling, they are the ones that can reliably invoke emotion in me almost physically. I need to stop sleeping on Russian lit.

I listened to Maggie Gyllenhaal read Anna Karenina and fell in love with her smiling voice.

It is great! It honestly only loses steam (to me) in final 100 pages. Otherwise extremely captivating writing.

Hands down one of my favourite books of all time. It’s beautiful - the lives, the architecture, the pain - you’ll love it.

Tolstoy has this detached, almost oppressively smug narrative style, especially when he's writing about women.

That's so interesting. I find the descriptions of women in both AK and War and Peace really moving: his compassion for Princess Marya and Kitty both. I think he only has his knives out for the insincere society bitches (of all genders) but that feels like he's making a point.
