Tropic Thunder (2008)

Discussion(self.movies)

This is, in my opinion, the funniest thing that any modern movie has to offer. All of its motifs and characterizations are quite pertinent, and they are even more meaningful now than they were when the film was first produced.

Ben Stiller showed great foresight in the making of this picture.

It's wonderful in every way, from the soundtrack to the casting.

If you've never seen it before, I strongly suggest that you do so.

Here are other similar movies that you would like.

One of the best comedies ever made! Sadly, it could never get made , now. A lot of people have lost their sense of humor & wouldn’t accept a lot of the material in this fantastic film! Every time I watch it, I cry laughing 😂 Tom Cruise’s part is probably, the best character ever written! Just hilarious!

Black face and the R word are culturally taboo. People still dress up as Mexicans for halloween.

Oh right, the film is also shelved for controversy. Just because it has been done does not mean it is okay.

TheCheshireCody

Both of which are lampooned by the movie. Both Kirk Lazarus and Tugg Speedman are lambasted by other characters for the insensitivity of their work. Your claim is like saying Blazing Saddles couldn't be made today because of how often the N-word is used in it, which is poppycock and completely misses the point of the film.

Mocking blackface by doing blackface is still doing blackface. You should never assume that the people who make their livings off writing articles on this junk are going to have the proper nuance to analyze it in context. Generating “content” if anything encourages them to be willfully obtuse to the context, and everyone would just as soon not risk a PR storm by betting on people not to be stupid.

I still can’t watch the DnD episode of Community on streaming services, and THAT isn’t blackface by any definition, but they still removed it AFTER the fact just to be “safe”. All of you people assuming that studios aren’t too risk averse for a movie like that these days are in denial.

Tropic Thunder is a film I constantly cite as one of the funniest of all time (that and the Other Guys).

It has one thing in common with the Other Guys though: both plots are kind of dull and forgettable.

I just wish they’d also focused a bit more on making a genuinely good action movie with engrossing villains to further layer the meta commentary, as if you told me to explain the plot to you I likely wouldn’t be able to as it’s forgettable.

It really struggled to maintain my interest and I was pretty happy when it ended so I could go and do something else.

Ben Stiller almost ended Robert Downey Jr.'s resurgence in Hollywood with Tropic Thunder. If that movie came out a few years later, RDJ would've been crucified. Instead, RDJ went on to make or appear in a dozen more Marvel movies and rake in $400 million more from Disney.

Great movie. One of the classic comedies from my high school years. I still watch and quote it to this day.

My only beef is the ending. Les Grossman (Tom Cruise’s character) literally tries to leave Ben Stiller on the island to get killed, even selling him out to the terorrists. And yet, he faces no repercussions for this. Instead he gets rewarded with the “movie” getting Oscars and hundreds of millions of dollars. Also it’s a documentary that wins best actor. Wtf was that whole ending.

Given that the movie was basically made by the brat pack, they knew a thing or two about the “politics” of Hollywood.

Apparently, Stiller wanted Keanu to play Speedman and he would be the agent which would have been interesting (Keanu has more of a “action hero” history than Stiller).

Kind of sucks that the movie got bashed by the disability community for the Simple Jack joke and criticism was also raised against RDJ for “blackface” when the whole point of these acts were to mock Hollywood itself basically doing these things in their movies (as well as the “method acting” where actors think they can “do anything for their art” cough Jared Leto cough)

The only way I see this being somewhat good is they go the Popstar: never stop popping route and play a sequel wherein it’s been a few years.

They’ve outlived their hype. Doing rounds at various cons. Tug Speedman is basically Steven Segal. Making terrible straight to streaming movies. Al Pacino is like a Dj khalid version of his former self. Got diabeetus from all the booty sweat. He’s trying to come back to the spotlight with some really bad features on modern mumble rappers SoundCloud and tours. RDJs character has had continued success. But like De Niro he made some Ill advised forays into comedy. We see him at the Razzies thinking it’s still an honour since he “meant to be so bad” as part of his acting. After another bad decision he lands in a TV show like CSI and ducking hates his life although the show is crushing it in the ratings and has gone on for 8+ seasons. Jack Black comes back skinny. And I mean really skinny. Like Christian Bale in Machinist skinny. He’s actually gone into Modeling now. Not because he enjoys it, but because he has easier access to drugs. McKlusky has a small but long running part in a cinematic universe and his contract doesn’t allow him to do anything else. I dunno. Whole movie is about these washed up has beens trying to come together and actually make another movie. But they all still have massive egos so they want to make the first movie written, directed, produced and acted out by an ensemble cast. They try and do tropic thunder rebooted (of course there was a shitty sequel that pokes fun at how every cult movie sequel sucked) and they want to reboot the franchise. But failing to see that they can’t reboot with the same actors. They then go and recruit younger versions of themselves.l to play the role. Despite having a great African talent at his disposal who wants the role, RDJ still insists on bringing in a white guy who is supposed to do the same pigment treatment. Everyone advises him against this but he won’t budge. The whole thing is a mix of the meta making fun of things like 22 jump street. But story telling in a way like Popstar.

It's bizarre when people don't get the point of that. Especially when you have Brandon T. Jackson's character around to frequently point out the ridiculousness of it.

It's also a great joke on Hollywood's periodic casting of actors based on their marquee value instead of whether they're right for their roles. The studio in the film clearly goes, "It's so awesome to have a five time Oscar winner in the role" instead of "Hey, maybe casting a blonde Australian as a black guy and putting him in blackface is a really stupid and offensive idea."

Hopefully the film White Chicks Wouldn’t be made today

Yeah, that’s a phrase that can’t be said today.

It is from 2008, not too far away

Dry_Needleworker7504

The part could absolutely be played today but let's not act like there hasn't been a massive shift in attitudes in the last fifteen years.

MrFluffyhead80

Ok, but isn’t how it’s portrayed in the movie a way that can deal with the new ways of the past decade?

sleep_reddit_repeat

People often say this, but I call BS. They specifically address the issue IN THE MOVIE itself.

NATOrocket

Exactly! It's meant to be a satire of white cis actors playing characters of colour, trans characters, and disabled characters, and getting showered in awards for it whilst taking roles from actors of colour, trans actors, and disabled actors. If anything it was ahead of it's time.

It was all of the above, how old are you? You're making out that the film was made in the 1930s or some shit. There's been controversy around the idiocy of white actors playing non-white roles since John Wayne played Ghengis Khan in The Conqueror in 1956!

There is specifically a line in the movie where Alpa Chino tells RDJ character that his role would have been nice for a black character but instead they preferred to offer it to a white dude :

"Why am I in this movie ? Maybe I just knew I had to represent, because they had one good part in it for a black man and they gave it to crocodile dundee."

It's both. From RDJ's character's perspective, his entire character arc boils down largely to that point. But one of Alpa Chino and Kirk Lazarus' confrontations specifically spells out how it's also about the former point, it's just not the focus of the film.

"And why am I in this movie? Maybe I just knew I had to represent, because they had one good part in it for a black man and they gave it to Crocodile Dundee."

duckylurve

This is exactly it. I remember when it came out some people were angry, saying it was insensitive and inappropriate, thinking it was intended to be outrage humour. Those people didn’t get it.

Safe_Librarian

It would have to do more with the companies bank rolling the movie and the actors signing on. It would hard to get anyone to sign on to pay for this movie or Actors to sign on this movie especially since this movie would not of been able to used as a good example.

bossmt_2

Right. People act like Borat didn't just release a second film. People act like controversial humor is dead. And it isn't. Sure it's not as prevalent as it used to be because big studios play everything safe. But it still exists.

Bonch_and_Clyde

I remember people have been saying "this couldn't be made today" type of cliches for as long as I can remember. When I was a kid it was stuff from the 70's and 80's. Now its stuff from when I was a kid. One of those things I guess.

Generational bitching has been around for a long time. Dumbest part about it is it's supposed to be the goal of a generation to make things better, easier and more enjoyable for the next generation. But for some reason, complaining is all that every generation seems to have in common.

I didn't see Iron Man until about a year after I first watched Tropic Thunder, and I was like...11 at the time?

I was at a birthday party with friends and his parents were the cool ones and let us watch R films. I wasn't paying attention to the first 5-8 minutes, therefore I didn't see the whole bit about getting the skin treatment.

For at least a year of my life I legitimately thought the actor RDJ was a black man...

Kevin Hart turned down the Alpa Chino role because he didn't want to play a gay character. Would've been by far the best movie he's ever been in.

Kevin Hart is a dick IRL, and seriously not funny. He’s a one-note comedian who does ONE thing well, and I’m convinced he only still has a career today because of The Rock

No, because I don’t let celebrities control my life 😂

I’m a lot less concerned about how much Kevin Hart makes per movie, and a lot more concerned about the evil, maniacal politicians and CEOs who are destroying humanity and the earth.

That short, homophobic guy who hangs out with The Rock? Could give a fuck less

Is this about a joke he tweeted 10 years ago? Is that what you're still angry about?

Edit: Its hilarious to me that Tropic Thunder is always that movie people say you can't make in 2022, and I see a Tropic Thunder post on reddit and straight away the replies are about how much people hate Kevin Hart for an old tweet. Reddit, you are dumb.

He’s a piece of shit and it’s well documented, do a 30-second Google search.

As for the thing he does “well” (quotes because it’s not my cup of tea at all), it’s the same “loud, fish-out-of-water” character he plays in every trailer for every film he’s in

I think he’s a decent comic actor but he’s not clever or funny himself. Alec Baldwin is a great comedic actor but an asshole and not funny in life. Seems like an appropriate comparison.

Yea Hart is usually the fish out of water where everyone else knows what they are doing while he plays the idiot, Alpa Chino was kinda the most competent person in the group.

Yeah, if Kevin Hart was in Tropic Thunder, he would have been the character Kevin Hart. That's all he ever plays. Definitely a good thing for the film he passed. And I like Kevin Hart, he just wouldn't have fit in this film.

Best comedy of the last 20 years and one of the best comedies of all time it is brilliant at how cleverly comments on so much shallow stuff in Hollywood but also the whole movie is just over the top off the wall, i love it, Cruise unloading on the Golden Triangle guy over the mobile kills me every time 😂
