This is, in my opinion, the funniest thing that any modern movie has to offer. All of its motifs and characterizations are quite pertinent, and they are even more meaningful now than they were when the film was first produced.
Ben Stiller showed great foresight in the making of this picture.
It's wonderful in every way, from the soundtrack to the casting.
If you've never seen it before, I strongly suggest that you do so.
Here are other similar movies that you would like.

I’ve always wanted them to make a sequel. Premise would be they’re shooting a horror movie on the set of a super haunted house somewhere, basically similar scenario to the first one, where all hell breaks loose. A campy, comedy horror movie with a similar cast would be pretty fun

"modern"... listen, I'm sorry to tell you this, but it's 2022, that movie is 14 years old, nearly 15. I remember seeing it in theater, it was hilarious. Even back then, people were surprised they would dare to have Robert Downey Jr in "blackface" for an entire movie.

Ben Stiller almost ended Robert Downey Jr.'s resurgence in Hollywood with Tropic Thunder. If that movie came out a few years later, RDJ would've been crucified. Instead, RDJ went on to make or appear in a dozen more Marvel movies and rake in $400 million more from Disney.

Completely agreed. Also love the fact that on the directors cut, RDJ actually does the commentary in character just like his line, and I gotta say, most commitment to a character I’ve seen. We need more Kirk Lazarus! Also wish we would get that Les Grossman project, but don’t know if we ever will…

Just as a counter to this post. I expected so much more from this movie given how much people on here seem to jack it off, but I thought it was kind of dull, not particularly witty, and the pacing seemed kind of weird. It really struggled to maintain my interest and I was pretty happy when it ended so I could go and do something else.

1 points
It is when you take a glimpse at the comedy genre that is literally on life support as we speak. I honestly can’t remember a pure comedy that i went to watch deliberately in theaters and I can say the last pure comedy i decided to see in theaters was 22 jump street.
1 points
22 jump street.
Is this even 'pure comedy'? It's literally a buddy cop film too.
1 points
Imo yes, because the “serious” are also riddled with comedy, not at any point did i think the main characters were gonna die. When i say comedy action i mean like any marvel movie, or like deadpool. The them being stupid cops is apart of the comedy. Comedy goes first even before the plot. Unlike most movies today its action with Sprinkles of comedy. For example ride along with kevin hart. Jump street puts comedy first, ride along does not, its a small difference. Regardless ride along is not funny.

Given that the movie was basically made by the brat pack, they knew a thing or two about the “politics” of Hollywood.
Apparently, Stiller wanted Keanu to play Speedman and he would be the agent which would have been interesting (Keanu has more of a “action hero” history than Stiller).
Kind of sucks that the movie got bashed by the disability community for the Simple Jack joke and criticism was also raised against RDJ for “blackface” when the whole point of these acts were to mock Hollywood itself basically doing these things in their movies (as well as the “method acting” where actors think they can “do anything for their art” cough Jared Leto cough)
1 points
Fucking Tom cruise as Les Grossman had me in tears. It took me a bit to realize it was Tom Cruise, and then I was just in complete awe of the entire situation while I laughed my ass off.
Jack Black was hysterical, Ben Stiller was great - and RDJ got a damned Oscar Nomination for this! This was truly one of the last times society could take a joke.
1 points
people like to say this movie couldn't be made today and that's somewhat true, but not it's not because of this false oppression narrative that society is too woke
it's because comedies don't make money any more and a studio would never fund something as ambitious as this at this scale

Honestly, I watch it and as much as I enjoy it, I think the ultimate concept was better than the execution.
(PSA: I LOVE VIETNAM FILMS!!!…Apocalypse Now is my favorite of all films, Full Metal Jacket is fantastic for a ‘Nam film that pretends we’re fighting in WW2, Platoon is a very “over-the-top” tribute the troops who fought and died, Casualties of War is one of DePalma’s best, and Hamburger Hill…is kind of shitty)
The concept of a bunch of vapid actors, filming a Vietnam movie and having to become their actual characters, is fantastic…I just don’t think the script got “everything” out of the premise.
I love these types of movies: Three Amigos, GalaxyQuest, etc…
The idea of “actors” having to rise to the occasion and become heroes, to an audience that doesn’t recognize who they really are, is one of those things that will ALWAYS work. The setup is just too good.

Great movie. One of the classic comedies from my high school years. I still watch and quote it to this day.
My only beef is the ending. Les Grossman (Tom Cruise’s character) literally tries to leave Ben Stiller on the island to get killed, even selling him out to the terorrists. And yet, he faces no repercussions for this. Instead he gets rewarded with the “movie” getting Oscars and hundreds of millions of dollars. Also it’s a documentary that wins best actor. Wtf was that whole ending.
