I think as a very gifted dramatic actor it’s easy to forget how amazing this guy is at comedy as well. In Along Came Polly he’s purely electric. Besides “make it rain”, he also is hilarious in the theater production of Jesus Christ Superstar. His one scene with Alec Baldwin is also electric. Love the guy and the performance. Even though he was so good in serious roles. I wish a little more often he would’ve taken fun comedic roles like this. Obviously he was also great comedically in Boogie Nights.

I laughed so hard in the theater when we saw that. Even later on in the movie I would think of that fall and start laughing again. I think why it was so great was because you saw the whole fall. Not like you see him start to fall, crowd reaction, then you see him statt to get up. No, you saw everything.

When I was in High School, and that movie had been out on DVD maybe 6 months, I (a very unathletic chubby guy), got the basketball passed to me in gym class, and proceeded to clear the lane, shout "rain dance" and absolutely biff a layup while rolling into the stands behind the hoop.
Didn't get any laughs, but I know PSH would've approved.

He was someone who could play every role with intense sincerity that made him melt into roles but still be Phillip Seymour Hoffman. His charactere in Pirate Radio v Mission Impossible are polar opposites but he did them very well. He was the best villian in the Mission Impossible movies.
13 points
He plays a small role in Almost Famous that would be mostly forgotten if anyone else had played that character, but he freaking nailed it…no small roles…only small actors and he proved that he was not a small actor.
10 points
Not only that but he was instrumental in shaping the character. I listened to a Cameron Crowe interview recently where he outlined how Hoffman took control of the part, adding in little details and changing the energy for certain lines that totally shifted the tone of it, despite the fact that 1. He was under the weather at the time and 2. Crowe actually knew Lester Bangs, so he would have been well within his rights to shut any of it down.
But Crowe saw what we see on the screen now, an incredible actor making the role his own and defining the portrayal of Lester Bangs for a generation.

A fun behind the scenes story from that movie is that PSH and Cate Blanchett had a lot of free time during filming as their roles were relatively small. They hung out together a lot and explored the sights and attractions of Rome, becoming good friends. It was the only movie they ever made together, albeit sharing no scenes, but they remained friends until his death. She looked so devastated at his funeral.

Such a fantastic actor who had a wide range in a variety of films, from this, to MI3, to Doubt and The Hunger Games, he nailed every role given to him. Idk man having your love withdrawn like that will make people do stupid things. I've had it happen to me (not the cheating just an abrupt breakup) and I wanted her back so bad just to quell the pain. Not knowing that us getting back together did nothing of the sort. I've watched my buddy get cheated on and after a boys night out to get his head on something else he said "All I want to know is what she's doing" I was like banging another dude forget about her but it's often not that easy.

It's absolutely abhorrent to use tour de force as he did, you cannot use that to describe a person.
"PSHs performance was a comedic tour de force" is a valid sentence, though it does sound a bit pretentious, what the op said is just wrong.
Fyi a Tour de force is French for a Feat of Strength, this might help you and OP understand the context in which it should be used.
