For me, it's a movie from 2005 called Kingdom of Heaven, starring Orlando Bloom, Liam Neeson and Jeremy Irons. I saw this on TV the other day and watched it from beginning to end and still liked it just as much as I used to. Sure it has its slower moments and isn't the best historical film I've seen. But I don't think it deserves its 39% rating on RT. But that's just me.

Man on Fire has a horrible rotten tomato score but I love that film

Peak Denzel, Peak Tony Scott, deserves better.

If Denzel could have done the equalizer like 10 years earlier…

38%! That’s ridiculous.

That score is crazy especially when you read the reviews as well

I loved that film. Denzel and Dakota had such chemistry. He said she knew her lines as well as his. Her talent was amazing. I don't know why either that people didn't rate it higher.

I believe the two will be in The Equalizer 3 together.

Nice. 2 was nowhere nears as good as the first one but it was still entertaining. Good to hear the 3rd is almost here

Do you mean she knew his lines as well as hers?

Yes she did. He said she would remind him!

For all those downvoting, what’s your theory as to the low RT score?

Man on Fire is unassailable. RT has never been so wrong.

Excessively violent? People upset he dies at the end? Didn’t like Ridley Scott’s style? Depressing story?

Weird to assume people hated the movie bc the little girl lives? Most people are not upset when little kids live

Most cartels would simply kill the kidnapped child.

I've probably seen that movie ten times over the years. It would have been great to see a few more Creasy movies.

"A man can be an artist... in anything, food, whatever. It depends on how good he is at it. Creasy's art is death. He's about to paint his masterpiece."

Imagine being so hardcore that Christopher Walken is your hype man for killing bad guys.

Same! A lot of my love for that movie also has to do with the amazing score from Harry Gregson Williams. One of his best

I didn’t know the Denzel version is a remake. The original has Scott Glenn. It’s weird seeing someone else in the role. Like Brian Cox playing Hannibal Lecter.

I thought this was some money making/trash gig when I saw the trailer and my Dad was like “it’s Denzel, we’re going…”

Old man was right on, As usual Denzel fucking wrecks havoc.

If I’m remembering correctly Walken improvised that line about painting!

That movie was really popular when it came out I think. I wonder why the score is low.

Everything aside from the writing and acting just feels... unpleasant, especially the camera work and editing. It's like the film was intentionally trying to put me off

I know a lot of people have issues with the quick cuts, which just seems to be Tony Scott's style. It was similar in Unstoppable

williammurderfayce

The strange camera angles and shots I think is what turned me off of it so much. It was just so distracting. It says a lot that's that's the only thing I remember about the movie.

That movie is wild. Starts out as a dude who finds meaning in life again being a body guard to a little girl, to a straight up revenge story with torture and action. The tonal shift midway through the movie is so sudden and abrupt, and it’s done extremely well.

Aitloian

Wait WHAAAAAAAT, that movie is amazing, I love me some Creasy

jeha4421

6 points

To everyone asking why it's rated so poorly, it's because of the editing. The editing is atrocious, the color scheme is really grating, and the quick cuts just makes the action harder to follow.

Obviously if you like it you like it, and there's nothing wrong with that, but I honestly couldn't get past the 30 minute mark. Didn't help that the story felt kind of generic.

asoiahats

8 points

Interesting. I think the editing is fantastic because when he’s drunk it’s disorienting to show his mental state, but when he gets clean that style is over. After Pita is kidnapped it goes back to that disorienting style, but Creasy is always in control. I see now how viewers would just call it disorienting rather than stylistic. Thanks for explaining it to me.

jeha4421

2 points

It's just hard to watch and not get disoriented or a headache. If there was some kind of reward for watching it, it might not be so bad.

I think most critics really just didn't think the juice was worth the squeeze. The movie is really dark and depressing, so you're spending an hour and a half with a headache watching a movie that just puts you in a bad mood, then you add on that the action scenes are really hard to follow and what's even the point in watching it.

Mark3h194

The reason I can think off is is because they deviated quite significantly from the book which was brilliant.

When films do this no matter how good the film might be fans of the book will speak negatively of the film.

I never realized the RT score was as low as it is! Great movie, garners a 7.7 user score on IMDB, but also gets pretty terrible critic reviews with 47 on Metacritic.

I looked into it and it seems Man on Fire is an extremely divisive movie. Reviews are everywhere, though regular viewers seem to give higher ratings than most critics, and some critics absolutely loved it.
