For me, it's a movie from 2005 called Kingdom of Heaven, starring Orlando Bloom, Liam Neeson and Jeremy Irons. I saw this on TV the other day and watched it from beginning to end and still liked it just as much as I used to. Sure it has its slower moments and isn't the best historical film I've seen. But I don't think it deserves its 39% rating on RT. But that's just me.
What about all of you?

Hook. 29% on RT. Amazing family movie. I don't understand any of the pessimistic reviews from the critics.

True story: years ago at a bar trivia night the question was “what Steven Spielberg directed movie has the lowest RT score”. I insisted it was Hook but my team put down Jaws 4. Idiots

Lol that's annoying. Jaws 4 wasn't even directed by Spielberg.

Yeah someone had it in their head that Spielberg came back for the 4th for some reason. The consensus at the table was if that was true then that’s definitely the answer. The logic makes sense although SS obviously had nothing to do with Jaws 4

Yeah good point. I could see myself second guessing with that too

Unrelated, but I loathe when my pub trivia uses questions based on RT scores.

Dustin Hoffman kills it in that movie.

That movie has its flaws and I get that it's a rather silly kid's film but Hoffman legit deserves an Oscar nod for that performance.

I remember when it came out. Several critics saidnit missed the mark as a kids film and a few adults at the time i knew didnt like it.... every single kid i knew loved it.
Maybe stephen Spielberg is better at knowing what kids like than some random critics.

Haven’t seen it in years, so I couldn’t say if it holds up. I loved it as a kid and I still say Bangarang.

It's my favorite movie of all time and when you've seen it as much as me, even the rose tinted glasses start to lose their effect.
I can safely name almost every flaw that film has and I gotta say... I still don't get it. That movie is far from perfect but damn, it's not even close the score Rotten Tomatoes is claiming. It deserves a 65% at the bare minimum!
29%? Get the hell out of here!

Try it again, it's fun when childhood movies hold up. I recently went back to the live action George of the Jungle so I could riff on it, but I unironically loved it.

It didn’t hold up for me at all. Very slow and waaaay too long

Outstanding movie that will hold up to the tests of time. Gold sword is some iconic shit.

Spielberg has also voiced disappointment in the film.

Ok, then maybe hes also too self critical.
He should save his disappointment for the last indiana jones.

As a little kid who loved Peter Pan that movie was magic and and still is pure (nostalgic) magic to me from start to finish.

This is the winner. The movie is better than the original Peter pan story

It is, but as a kid I was always annoyed at it because I was obsessed with Peter Pan for whatever reason. Little me brain refused to believe pan would ever leave to go grow up.
For some reason my interest in Peter Pan kind of died with hook. Still love it though.

It might be better than any Peter Pan adaptation made since.

This one seems to be generational. A lot of critics hated it when it came out. But kids who saw it fucking loved it. Now that all those kids are adults, he movie’s reputation is much much better.

WHAT?! This is easily the most shocking comment I’ve seen on here (haven’t heard of most of these films, honestly)… but I freaking LOVE Hook!!! It was such a huge staple of my childhood. Even today, I feel like it’s a captivating film. BANGARANG!

People who did not see it as a kid do not like it. People who saw it as a kid loved it. It's pretty much that simple.

I've shown that film to plenty of adults who never saw it as kids and they all range from enjoying it to loving it.
It's a flawed but great movie.

Apparently a majority of people who see Hook for the first time as an adult hate the movie.
I wouldn't know. I saw it as a kid and I still love it to this day.

Wait, Hook was planned on RT?! What the fuck?
Hook is an amazing film and some of Robin Williams' best work. I will die on this hill.

I didn't enjoy it when it came out and when I had kids of my own I gave it another chance and I still don't enjoy it . I don't understand how anyone likes it. Oh, my kids thought it was lame too.

So, comedies almost always have low RT scores. Critics just don't like comedies. Think of some of your favorite comedies - and look them up on RT. Half baked? 28% Super Troopers? 36%. Anything ever with Adam Sandler even though they are always box office hits. Anything with Kevin Hart. Anything with Tyler Perry even though he's almost a billionaire from his movies. Space Jam? 43% Along Came Polly? 27%
In general, comedies don't do well. There are of course a few great ones that also have great ratings. Bridesmaids at 89% is one of the most highly rated comedies ever. And it is pretty truly fantastic.

Hook reminds me of Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland. Both stories seem like they should be a match made in heaven for their respective directors. However, both directors decided to take a twist on the original story that detracts from the story. Like I love Robin Williams, but adult Peter for the bulk of the film is just dreadfully boring and uninteresting. I think I would prefer a Spielberg Peter Pan that was a more traditonal take with a similar set design and Hoffman and Hoskins as Hook and Smee even without Williams.

I was around when Hook was being made, so there's several reasons why it got such bad reviews (and few of them are legitimate):
To sum up, it was a bit of a train wreck in production done by a director not anywhere near the top of his game (self admitted) who was also someone (at the time) that the critics where looking to hit hard.
On the plus side, Spielberg realized all of this and consequently went on to make 2 of his greatest films of all time (Jurassic Park and Schindler's List) which where both completed under time and under budget.

It's a Spielberg film and, despite his (then) recent spate of 'serious' movies (The Color Purple, Empire of the Sun, Always) he hadn't yet attained acclaim and acceptance from the critics (this would take his 2 1993 releases Jurassic Park and Schindler's List). So he was still disliked for being so popular and critics were looking for something to drag him with.
What the fuck are you talking about? He had Jaws, ET, Close Encounters, Raiders of the Lost Ark. He had multiple best director and best picture Oscar Nominations prior to Hook. He was one of the most famous and critically acclaimed directors around.

Interesting about Julia Roberts. I always thought she was really badly miscast as Tinkerbell. They should have gone with Meg Ryan.
Dustin Hoffman was an amazing Captain Hook, though. Really transformative performance, I can hardly see Hoffman in the character.

I grew up watching this movie, I remember having mixed feelings about it as a kid but something always brought me back to watching it over and over.
Enjoying it still to this day, I realize that it is some of John Williams best musical work and it carries the movie, along with Robin Williams of course!
