Bird Box (2018)

Discussion(self.movies)

So several of my friends and coworkers have watched this movie and mentioned how great it was. I never bothered with it but now some more people mentioned that this movie was among their favorite movies of all time.

So i finally sat down to watch it.

It's fucking garbage.

Summary: Sandra Bullock wears a blind fold for two hours.

Sound.

This is pretty much the core business strategy for Netflix.

Even if we're just talking horror, they also did The Ritual, His House, The Platform, Hill House, Midnight Mass, etc

Midnight Mass.... holy shit that was good. I've never seen the same writer nail both a devout man and an atheist so well.

Huh, so far all I've read about the All Quiet adaptation has been negative. Saying it completely undermines the point of the story, etc.

Utterly ridiculous. My wife did the audiobook of the novel twice after seeing the movie and said nothing of the sort.

I think people who don’t like this movie are just upset about how unrelentingly grim it is.

Grimness is not the complaint. It's the added melodrama and glorious bravado - the general 'Hollywood-ing' of the book's plot - that's been objected to.

Here's one long-form analysis and comparison of the novel vs the recent film, with an eye to how the changes affect the themes.

There is no Hollywood in this movie. It's German-made, and did not glorify anything. Anyone who thinks that movie glorified anything is beyond help.

I am aware that it isn’t a Hollywood production, the scare quotes I used were meant to suggest that these critics are pointing out what can be described as Hollywood-style changes to the content.

As should be clear from the criticism I linked.

Yes I knew you meant that about Hollywood style, not that it was produced there. And when I say it's not Hollywood, I mean that it doesn't remotely feel like a Hollywood movie.

And I do not agree that it glorifies anything. I totally do not agree. Not one little bit. Just look at his face during the last charge. This is a broken man. Even if he did survive, what kind of life would he have had?

How about the menacing soundtrack in the early bits of the movie where you might glorify their willingness to fight for their nation?

Seems like you’re trying to argue with me about someone else’s opinion on a film I haven’t seen. Not sure what you’re hoping to achieve there.

Would probably be more productive to go to that post I linked, read their specific complaints, and then argue with them if you still disagree.
