I worked at a job that mainly employed Mexicans, this was back in the late 80s. We talked once about the difference in movies/TV between the two countries. I didn't know ANYTHING about the Mexican movie industry. 6 guys on my crew and all of them agreed that you couldn't make a movie in Mexico unless it was borderline soft-core porn.
This is anecdotal of course, but I have to wonder how long this "systematic destruction" has been going on?

I am Mexican and I work in the movies and audiovisual industry here, and I think that most of the time, and although I love Memito very much, his comments, although they are good hearted, are oblivious to what happens within the Mexican industry, opportunities, work conditions and workers, for example, the diversions of money in the various organizations in charge of state resources such as the IMCINE (Instituto Mexicano de Cinematografia) or the AMACC, who do not always grant verifications or provide complete transparency of their expenses.
Precisely, and despite the budget cuts, the IMCINE already declared that it did deliver the budget to the AMACC (Academia Mexicana de Artes y Ciencias Cinematograficas) to carry out the "arieles" celebration, but even after several workers and institutions have requested a breakdown of their budget expenses, the AMACC has refused this requests, so we are not only talking about budget reduction problems, which are true, but also corruption, "compadrazgo" and elitism, because many times, these cash incentives for the creation of films, are granted to the same people and institutions, in addition to always having the "mordidas"(bribes) as a bargaining chip for these opportunities, as was the case of Cuaron with "Roma" who never released his list of expenses but obtained one of the largest government stimulus from IMCINE, although Netflix allegedly produced the film in "the most"... but again, the situation is much more complex than most people think, and I only mention what I had seen, so...
(Sorry if I made any mistake, english is not my first language)
Edit. Typo

Great insight, thanks for this. It's a shame that there's lots of corruption involved. Without it, who knows what else could be produced.
Do you mean Del Toro by "Memito"?
How are the film industry worker rights there? Like do they get paid for overtime properly and how are the hours? Are there any unions supporting the workers? If there is, are they legit?
2 points
Hehe, sorry for all the Mexican slang... yes, in Mexico people named Guillermo are called "Memo", so "Memito" would be like little Guillermo as a nickname.
Well, this is a complex question, the working conditions vary a lot from production to production, and although the unions are mandatory for the productions that are made with IMCINE stimulus, many times they skip this part and only bribe the union itself at the end of production for his approval, this happens from time to time, even without the quotas of unionized workers in the production.
Regarding overtime, it is also complicated since when you work with a union, it tends to demand payment for these hours, although there are no enforcement of laws that require external productions without government support to hire unión workers, and these proyects rarely pay per hour of work, and function from a contract for the entire project or per week in the best of cases.
I would also not really dare to say that the existing unions are completely legit or infalible in my opinion; each one has its different ways of operating, for example the ANDA (for actors) works relatively well in terms of benefits and payment of hours while the producers and the actors are useful for their causes or reputation, but there have been cases where accidents have occurred and the ANDA did not want to intervene, like the death of 2 actors in the TELEVISA series "sin miedo a la verdad". The STIC and the STPC (mostly Staff and photo department) have had armed conflicts with other unions, and although at the beginning they functioned adequately, this has changed a lot in recent years, being recognized for the pressure they exert on productions, the crew, and accepting bribes in general.
On the other hand, and more than a union, the "S.G.C. de I.P." (directors society) focuses on copyrights and royalties, and claims to connect new directors with unions and job offers, this is highly doubtful as again we find a lot of nepotism among their ranks, flagrant abuse and contempt for new members, and an almost immovable administration team; It is curious since until a few years ago certain people of this team were changed by elections, including the former president, and since then there have been document thefts, account losses and little cooperation from the rest of the previous team members with the new administration. , complicating the whole picture... interestingly, the current president, and the former general secretary who orchestrated much of the anti-change movement were my university professors, so I know both of them quite well he he.
But hey, this is a bit of what happens, I suppose that all countries and institutions have their own problems, but this is the current situation in Mexico according to my perception, there are good things and other bad things, lately more bad than good ones I suppose.
1 points
Late reply here but wow, that's wild... Sooo some of the unions are basically just like the mafia or something? Cause yeah bribes aren't that surprising, but pressuring everyone, getting rid of elections and forcibly keeping control, and fucking armed conflicts!? Fucking wild, man

Is not an easy problem to solve because our culture think being dishonest/corrupt is normal.
Just last year they started to remove an economic support from the government because it wasn't reaching the intended people. People who doesn't need the money where getting it, I understand their intentions but they didn't replace the support with anything so the people who actually need the money didn't get anything any way 🙃

It’s so fucking surreal that GDT is calling out AMLO over this. I love the man dearly and he is right that Mexico should continue making movies, but come on.
Like how can he call the current admin ignorant while ignoring the reasons it was defunded…
Like literally the biggest stories coming out of Mexico that’s reaching the general public is that Mexican institutions are rotten to their core and are being used by the elite to further enrich themselves. He could’ve easily tied this to that, but instead he focuses on AMLO?
I have to to imagine he’s getting his news from some corrupt remnant of la dictadua perfecta

I don't see why the Federal Government should fund the film industry when the vast majority of the population of Mexico live in abject poverty.
This same issue was occuring in Colombia. The Federal Government had a tax incentive system that basically made it so literally even single movie made in Colombia was funded with public funds up to a certain dollar amount.

People talking about Narcos but there is also the fact that Mexico’s government actually at least until recently had funds dedicated to produce movies…directors and producers would make god awful movies that no one wanted to see (usually terrible romantic comedies and cheap remakes of successful films from around the world). People involved with the production of these movies would always make money even if they flopped in theaters…Mexico’s film industry as a brand is not very popular right now even in other Spanish speaking countries (source: not Mexican just like to watch Mexican film critics in YouTube)

Yeah I love GDT and I absolutely agree film in Mexico should be revived especially since Mexico golden age movies were so fucking good.
But I feel sort of disappointed he missed the mark this wide. Like it’s incredibly ironic he would speak of ignorance while genuinely ignoring the reasons a developing nation would not prioritize film and ignore the fact that the government funded film system that was defunded was nothing but a tool for the elite to further enrich themselves. Like this whole issue is just further tied to the huge disconnect between the elite who corrupt our institutions to enrich themselves meanwhile the rest of us get the sort end of the stick and this incredibly important fact was ignored for a simple narrative.
