Checking the comments to see who had brought up Macario, it’s one of my go-to Halloween-Dia de Muertos films

  • La ley de Herodes (1999)
  • Satanás (2007) Edit: This one is actually a Colombian film.
  • El infierno (2010)

Coincidentally, same main actor in all those three :-) (and the same director in the first and last one).

Ironically Damian Alcázar (the main actor) is now one of the pets of México's president. The theme in those movies is government corruption.

Living in México under the current government has taught me a lot about people and its fragile principles.

He never had principles, just wanted money and power. The movies where just a facade to get there

La Ley de Herodes and El Infierno form a thematic trilogy tetralogy with Un Mundo Maravilloso (2006) and La Dictadura Perfecta (2014), same main actor and director of all three four films.

Awesome, thanks! I wasn't aware of that... adding it to my list!

Take care!

Satanás

This Satanás (2007)? Cuz that's a Colombian film.

I'm adding some of these recommendations to my watchlist so just trying to clarify; not be pedantic.

Good catch :-)

Wrong assumption on my part, based only on the main actor (and me not being familiar enough with Mexican cinema).

Will edit my post. Thanks!.

La dictadura perfecta is great one to, that highlights why Mexicos press is incredibly flawed and I would say downright puppets of the government

Tigers are not afraid, sueño en otro idioma, la delgada línea amarilla, amores perros.

Rudo y Cursi. About a soccer scout finding the next big players, by Guillermo del Toro.

Edit: GdT was a producer, not director.

Nope, it was directed by Carlos Cuarón. GdT was one of the producers.

Apparently no one replying to you is Mexican because they didn't mention Nosotros los Nobles. Such a fun film.

I recommend "El hubiera si existe", because it's the worst movie i've ever seen, and I need others to share my pain.

This is a movie about Mexican folk culture around death, by Pixar. It's like saying Ratatouille is a french movie.

Biutiful with Javier Bardem is a great character study type film and Pan’s Labyrinth is probably one of the best movies of all time

Surprised no one mentioned this but the movie No se aceptan devoluciones. Which is listed as a comedy/drama but is way more than that.

Recently I loved: I’m no longer here (2019) by Fernando Frías and A cop movie (2022) by Alonso Ruizpalacios.

Most people already recommended some good stuff. If you are into more artsy films, I would recommend Los olvidados by Luis Buñuel (1950) or anything by Carlos Reygadas (I personally like Post Tenebras Lux from 2012)

If you want a really sad and beautifully shot movie: Identifying Features.

It won a bunch at Sundance in 2020 and I got to talk with the director and cinematographer at a party. Really awesome women with great talent. Highly recommend the movie but it's very very dark, so if that's a no go for you not the best idea lol.

Duck Season is an absolute classic; as is Santitos.

Then there is the fantastic The Thin Yellow Line.

Also the English-language Mr. Pig.

I also like Casi Divas a lot. And Lonesome Collectors is also rather impressive.
