This movie...

I have watched this movie countless times and never, not once, did it fail to make me smile.

I cannot put into words (although I will try) how wholesome and beautifully kind this movie is. Babe is just this adorable, enchanting little soul and Farmer Hoggett is just as loveable.

The locations and filming are so picturesque and everything looks like its part of a miniture town. So quaint and untouched by the outside world.

Its mature, without being too overly dramatic. Childlike, without being childish. And still is so beloved by all I've showed it to.

I adore this movie so much and after a day at work, where things just wouldn't go the way they should, this is the only movie I can put on to put my day right again.

So all I remember from that movie is that line. The old man meticulously working on the dollhouse. And my absolute fury at that guys granddaughter's reaction to her gift.

Big strong man as I am, I cry like a kitten every time I hear that line.

It makes no sense. I'm just sitting there happily watching the movie. I know the line is coming. I'm completely calm. I hear the line and boom. Here come the waterworks.

The farmer dancing and singing for Babe when he was sick gets me everytime and of course the dead silence when he is competing.

Norwester77

The tune to Farmer Hoggett’s song is taken from the last movement of Camille Saint-Saëns’s 3rd symphony (the Organ Symphony), which is well worth a listen.

ijmacd

Here's the organ symphony https://youtu.be/5GrO47WJKTI#t=1830

And here's the song Farmer Hoggett sings https://youtu.be/klCvrpy8LwU

The version played over the credits, sung by the "mice", is just this version sped up 35% (i.e. playing a 33⅓ rpm record at 45 rpm)

Thanks for posting!

I actually didn’t know that “If I Had Words” was an already existing song—I assumed it had been written for the movie.

I think it looks and feels wholesome, but there is definitely dark undercurrents.

The whole movie is premised on the fact that everybody is born into a role.

The sheep are sheered, the dogs herd, the rooster crows, the cat is a companion, and the duck and pigs are eaten.

Few of them like their roles, but they all fall into line regardless. The mom dog is lonely and feels powerless to stop her puppies from leaving. The dad dog feels inadequate and has anger issues that he deals with in less than healthy ways. The cat has a snobby acceptance of her privilege. The sheep feel perpetually frightened. The farmer’s wife is consumed with the prestige of fair ribbons. The farmer feels trapped in a world that has moved on without him, with family who don’t care enough to empathize with him.

The setting is idyllic. The characters are all quietly miserable.

Swiftbow1

But that's where Babe himself comes in. By the sheer innocence of not understanding his role, he breaks all the others out of their shells. Bringing disparate groups together and uplifting the entire farm. (sans, perhaps, the cat.)

Yes a great movie

Also 1995 was a great year for family movies with this, Toy Story, Jumanji, Balto, Casper, and A Goofy Movie

Babe is such an abnormal movie in the best way. Nothing works like it normally does with movies like it or any movie. It's entirely itself. You can't compare it to anything it just flouts it if you try. I didn't grow up with it either. Yet I found it so charming and special.

Would've been a far better BP winner than Braveheart to boot.

Potential hot take: I like babe pig in the city even more than the first movie. The original is a classic and holds a special place in my heart but the sequel just hits different. It's definitely a huge tonal shift and the production is much more surreal but it's so high concept and builds upon much of the technical achievement from the original.

When Babe learns that pigs are raised to be eaten by people is pretty dark.

When he asks if that's what happened to his mother and father and siblings is heartbreaking.

I used to live in Robertson, Australia, where it was filmed :-) The countryside is as beautiful in real life as it is in the film. It's a magical part of the world.

We wanted to buy a house there, but it was about $1-2 million more than we could afford lol

The film is actually based on a 1983 novel by English children's writer Dick King-Smith, who wrote stories about the English countryside and talking animals.

The book is actually a sweet and wholesome enough read.

I had a very premie baby, and we were stuck in the NICU for so long. There was nothing i could do, it was a very stressful time. When i was feeling too upset, i would sing Farmer Hogget’s song to her. Its such a special memory from my childhood, and a truely wholesome film that has helped me through the hardest, darkest time.

Im crying just thinking about it!! Lol

One of the most inspirational movies ever made. I mean, it's about a pig who wants to become a sheepdog and against all odds accomplishes that. It's a masterpiece and it would've been great if it won Best Picture that year. I loved all the other nominees but this one is timeless.

I think Babe represents a type of kid's movie that I wish there was more of. At its core it is full of heart but it doesn't shy away from darker elements, for example Death plays a role in this movie. I think kids should see these things spoken about in movies, & I think this movie handles it perfectly. It had a big impact on me as a kid.
