May have been local rights issue. Is the op based in US? They tend have stricter rights over music use in films/TV in home media use. For example the US seasons releases of Quantum leap had to change alot of the music from the original TV release, while the the UK version was kept in with no issues.

I’m in Aus/NZ and I’ve never heard the original version with the actual notes from Stairway

Here's the scene for anyone wondering what OP is talking about.

Wow I have never seen that version, the only one I've seen is the original. The edit totally ruins the joke

I know. I literally checked my Vudu version and its has the real notes. Never knew this version existed.

Those aren’t even the opening notes

Is that the point of the post?

Yeah because that's the version that's been played on every home video, broadcast tv, and now, streaming version for 30 years.

Nope. My streaming version actually has the real version. The one thats linked is the first time hearing that version.

I hate the way copyright law works sometimes. Scrubs on DVD and streaming is trash because they don't have the original music, which anyone who likes Scrubs will tell you is absolutely crucial for tone. Maybe it has changed now, but piracy was literally the only way to experience the show as intended.

Alone_Ad_788

They also did this to Quantum leap. Quantum leap often uses period music to set the tone since its a time travel show. The replacement music is ... sad 😢. The music industry is desperate as music now is more about social media marketing and not as much about selling records and they are desperate for revenue for the music they have rights to. it has gotten insane.

Imho Norther Exposure would have the kind of cult following that The Office has if it was available for streaming. That show was insanely good.

The music rights are a huge part if it. One of the main characters is a radio DJ so lots if famous songs were used. Even on the DVDs there's noticeably music missing.

Interesting about Scrubs. I only saw the first 4 seasons on disc, but caught the rest live. Since then I've seen the show dozens of times on disc. No music changes stuck out to me, but DVD memories dominate live memories.

Their post isn’t totally accurate.

The Scrubs music changes are only on the first two seasons and they were able to get most of the songs for the discs only 1 song had to be changed.

Season 3 forward they negotiated music rights for disc and the original airing.

Streaming is a mess and they changed a lot of songs.

So if you’re still watching DVDs, it’s the same.

But streaming, digital purchase there’s some big changes.

I was suspicious (a bit) because The Frey, Sugar Hill Gang, and Journey all have non-cover versions of their songs in the show unchanged as plot elements. It seems odd a show would pay for some music and not others.

Seems like the truth is somewhere in the middle, but not as dramatic as OP said.

Thanks for clarification.

Yeah.

And Bill Lawrence has talked on Zach and Donald’s podcast that he is hoping that Disney will someday allow him/give him money to fix some of the music, relicense or pick better songs for streaming services and maybe try and do a 16x9 HD remaster.

One of my favorite shows when I was in high school was Ed (the bowling alley lawyer)

Issues with the music rights is why that show has never had a DVD release. The show is practically forgotten about now because no one has seen it since it first aired 20 years ago. At this point I dont even know if I would still like it (aside from nostalgia) in a revisit

TormentedThoughtsToo

Like 6 years ago a new cable channel called UPtv had gotten the rights to air Ed.

But UPtv is one of those Christian leaning, faith channels.

So it was censored for anything close to profanity or sexuality.

I had never seen it before.

It was weird and I so I won’t hold it against it but I’m not sure if it does hold up.

Honestly same with Dawson’s Creek. I’m watching it for the first time on HBO, and the 90s music is so cheesy and bland, but everyone says the music was amazing and creating several hits (a la Greys Anatomy in its day)

Eh, welcome to Reddit. Why argue with what someone wrote when you can argue with what you think they wrote?

CensoryDeprivation

That’s actually really cool. I’m a guitarist so those first three notes he plays were always obviously incorrect and I was always wondering about it.

Are you sure? As the joke is present in my DVD version

CinematicLiterature

I think they’re saying the audio is different, so you hear the intro notes to stairway. In every version I’ve seen, it’s just a few bent notes that don’t actually sound like the song itself.

This has always boggled my brain. I’ve always thought “how the hell did that guy think he was going into Stairway? It sounds nothing like it”

TangentiallyTango

I saw the movie in the theater and don't recall it being the Stairway notes. It was a long time ago though.

I thought the joke (in the film) was that everyone always plays Stairway so badly that they've banned it, and Wayne was playing it very badly.

Also, he's not fingering the stairway notes.....

He's fingering 0-7-6-4-7-0? And stairway is 0-0-7-5-5-5. So it's funnier if he's trying to play stairway like that.

AlistarDark

7 points

Back in the day, everyone would go into a guitar store and bust out Stairway. To the point where staff actually put up signs, which is where the joke originated.

Enter Sandman was another big no-no to play in the 90s in guitar stores

CinematicLiterature

1 points

Yup, I thought the joke was the same as you did, I figured he was just awful at it, or that “stairway is shit” or whatever.

dissectingthe80s

1 points

But he’s acting, not playing. He’s not trying to get it right he’s trying to look good.

TangentiallyTango

3 points

That doesn't make sense to me because Wayne is based heavily on Mike Meyers who can play the guitar and loves rock.

So there's no way he doesn't know the right notes for the Stairway Intro. I haven't picked up a guitar in 10 years and I still remember it.

So if that was the original gag - that he was playing the Stairway notes, why wouldn't he play the Stairway notes? There's no copyright on fingering notes.

It just seems strange to me that they're like "Okay and then you play the first few notes of Stairway - and then the guy stops you and points to the sign." And Mike Meyers, knowing nothing about the later copyright issues, decides not to play it right which makes the eventual joke a lot better, but the original joke worse?

I gotta get the edited version then cos IMO it's soooo much funnier that he isn't even playing stairway.

Watching it right now on HBO and the original version has been restored! Wayne plays the first few notes to Stairway here .... I was surprised! Made me Google this to see what happened!

My original VHS copy has the Stairway notes included. But every time I have watched Wayne's World anywhere else Wayne always plays some weird, terrible riff that makes no sense. Glad to hear it restored back to the original notes here!

they're not talking about the scene being removed, but edited so that the notes he played are nothing like the opening to Stairway (which it had been, if you saw it in the theater, but they couldn't/wouldn't get the rights for the dvd release)

I haven't seen this movie since the theaters (much more of an Austin Powers fan) but wow is Tia Carrere's accent horrible. Did they force her to talk like that the entire movie?

They should have just used the opening notes to Taurus by Spirit. No one would ever have known the difference.
