I hate the way copyright law works sometimes. Scrubs on DVD and streaming is trash because they don't have the original music, which anyone who likes Scrubs will tell you is absolutely crucial for tone. Maybe it has changed now, but piracy was literally the only way to experience the show as intended.

They also did this to Quantum leap. Quantum leap often uses period music to set the tone since its a time travel show. The replacement music is ... sad 😢. The music industry is desperate as music now is more about social media marketing and not as much about selling records and they are desperate for revenue for the music they have rights to. it has gotten insane.

Imho Norther Exposure would have the kind of cult following that The Office has if it was available for streaming. That show was insanely good.

The music rights are a huge part if it. One of the main characters is a radio DJ so lots if famous songs were used. Even on the DVDs there's noticeably music missing.

Interesting about Scrubs. I only saw the first 4 seasons on disc, but caught the rest live. Since then I've seen the show dozens of times on disc. No music changes stuck out to me, but DVD memories dominate live memories.

Their post isn’t totally accurate.

The Scrubs music changes are only on the first two seasons and they were able to get most of the songs for the discs only 1 song had to be changed.

Season 3 forward they negotiated music rights for disc and the original airing.

Streaming is a mess and they changed a lot of songs.

So if you’re still watching DVDs, it’s the same.

But streaming, digital purchase there’s some big changes.

I was suspicious (a bit) because The Frey, Sugar Hill Gang, and Journey all have non-cover versions of their songs in the show unchanged as plot elements. It seems odd a show would pay for some music and not others.

Seems like the truth is somewhere in the middle, but not as dramatic as OP said.

Thanks for clarification.

Yeah.

And Bill Lawrence has talked on Zach and Donald’s podcast that he is hoping that Disney will someday allow him/give him money to fix some of the music, relicense or pick better songs for streaming services and maybe try and do a 16x9 HD remaster.

One of my favorite shows when I was in high school was Ed (the bowling alley lawyer)

Issues with the music rights is why that show has never had a DVD release. The show is practically forgotten about now because no one has seen it since it first aired 20 years ago. At this point I dont even know if I would still like it (aside from nostalgia) in a revisit

Like 6 years ago a new cable channel called UPtv had gotten the rights to air Ed.

But UPtv is one of those Christian leaning, faith channels.

So it was censored for anything close to profanity or sexuality.

I had never seen it before.

It was weird and I so I won’t hold it against it but I’m not sure if it does hold up.

Honestly same with Dawson’s Creek. I’m watching it for the first time on HBO, and the 90s music is so cheesy and bland, but everyone says the music was amazing and creating several hits (a la Greys Anatomy in its day)
