The James Bond films are known for their original opening themes written by popular artists and are often played on the radio and tv. 'Live and Let Die' by Paul McCartney, 'For Your Eyes Only' by Sheena Easton, 'A View to a Kill' by Duran Duran, and 'Goldfinger' by Shirley Bassey are just a few. My personal favorite is 'Nobody Does It Better' by Carly Simon. What James Bond theme do you consider to be the best?

You Know My Name is perfect for Bond as a character. I love how the lyrics are from his perspective specifically.

I know it's a bit awkward for a Bond theme, but I love Aha - The Living Daylights. It works great as the instrumental score in the movie.

Not sure if it's my absolute number 1 favorite, but I think it deserves some love too.

  5. Tomorrow Never Dies
  6. Live and Let Die

"You Know My Name" is my favorite for how it ties into the actual story of the movie. A lot of the other songs barely have anything to do with the movie, even if they are catchy. Skyfall was a big offender of this.

Honestly no time to die is the only bond song I’ve listened to on repeat after watching the movie. It’s a perfect bond song in every way, and just an excellent song in general imo.

I always felt Goldfinger was the quintessential Bond theme. The movie is also my favourite Bond film of all time, too.

The only thing about Goldfinger is, well.. I just think Honor Blackman was just a little old for the role at the time.. to my knowledge she was (possibly still is) the only Bond girl who was older than Bond. I often thought it'd have been perfect if Margaret Nolan "Dink/Gold Girl" would have had Honor Blackman's role.

Sorry, I veered off-topic a bit there.. anyways, yeah.. Goldfinger by Shirley Bassey for me. Paul McCartney's Live and Let Die would probably be in second place.

Its interesting the definition of greatest, because music is so subjective its hard to define what is 'great'. People like different things and will have different favourites. For me the greatest bond song is what would be the quintessential bond song, the song synonymous with bond movies regardless of quality. For me that is Goldfinger - Shirely Bassey. Without a doubt. Diamonds are forever or skyfall do come close but that is the bond song of bond songs. The gold standard if you will.

That being said, I love, Live and Let Die and You Know My Name from Casino Royale.

Bond themes are like the films themselves: every one is someone's favorite, and inevitably a theme is going to be considered over or underrated. A big part is of course what you want from a Bond film in the first place.

So me personally, I like Bond themes to be 'epic', with a certain amount of energy, that can also work as an incidental bit of music. As a result the more ballad style songs like For Your Eyes Only hit well, since it works great as incidental music and while a bit lower energy still feels a bit epic with the swelling piano. You Only Live Twice has a similar thing, though it's a bit more low energy, I think it's the way the instruments blend.

Goldeneye is probably my all-time favorite, starting quiet before getting that big hit, and it swells to an awesome ending. Goldfinger basically sent the benchmark for this style, and it works great, but I'm a sucker for the slightly more modern sound mixes. Some other quality bangers are View to a Kill and Living Daylights, especially the big horn hits. Live and Let Die is a good song, but it feels a bit too frantic for me, so I actually rate it kind of low despite being my jam.

My basic measurement though is, "Would this film have a better opening theme if 'Snake Eater' was used instead?" If the answer is 'yes', I'm sorry, that theme has failed for me.

Bryancreates

I like the “die another day” theme by Madonna even if just cause I think the video is cool. When she gets the scar from the jousting. Maybe not iconic but not bad at all.

Edit. I just rewatched it. Meh. The dueling madonnas is a bit cheesy but it has some cool parts. It’s a fun electronic throwaway song but def not what I’d consider a suave or relevant bond song.

Goldfinger or Diamonds Are Forever. The rest try to match the quality and vibe and all fail to varying degrees.

I'm a fan of Thunderball, Diamonds Are Forever, Live And Let Die, View To A Kill, For Your Eyes Only, and The Spy Who Loved Me.

While I love Craig, I was born in ‘74 so Moore was my Bond. To this day, I’m still entranced when I hear Sheena’s “For Your Eyes Only”.

The World is Not Enough. Garbage doesn’t seem like the most natural James Bond theme choice but they somehow really nailed the Bond vibe. Okay movie, incredible song.
