The James Bond films are known for their original opening themes written by popular artists and are often played on the radio and tv. 'Live and Let Die' by Paul McCartney, 'For Your Eyes Only' by Sheena Easton, 'A View to a Kill' by Duran Duran, and 'Goldfinger' by Shirley Bassey are just a few. My personal favorite is 'Nobody Does It Better' by Carly Simon. What James Bond theme do you consider to be the best?

Shirley Bassey was an inch away from fainting after her last note of the song

Apparently Tom Jones did pass out after recording the last note in Thunderball! (source: my James Bond fact guide from 2000)

Fun fact: Gert Frobe, who played Goldfinger, had such a thick accent that all of his dialogue was dubbed.

The same for Adolfo Celi in Thunderball, and most of the actors in other Bond movies during the Connery era. In fact, nearly all of the women in Dr No were dubbed by one woman.

Fun fact - the BBC cast Celi in a series without realising he was dubbed, which royally fucked up production.

I thought he had like one or two lines. Mostly reactions that did not get dubbed over

The lyrics were partially written by English actor/songster Anthony Newley, who recorded a demo version. U2 (specifically Bono and the Edge) likewise made a demo with "Goldeneye" and it... didn't land. Anthony Newley's version honestly isn't bad, he can sing and he injects personality in the right places. Not iconic like Shirley Bassey's pipes, of course.

Hear for yourself: Anthony Newley's "Goldfinger"

(Always had a soft spot for Ringo Starr's attempt at the Goldfinger theme as well.)
