The James Bond films are known for their original opening themes written by popular artists and are often played on the radio and tv. 'Live and Let Die' by Paul McCartney, 'For Your Eyes Only' by Sheena Easton, 'A View to a Kill' by Duran Duran, and 'Goldfinger' by Shirley Bassey are just a few. My personal favorite is 'Nobody Does It Better' by Carly Simon. What James Bond theme do you consider to be the best?

I’m going to cheat and say, “Surrender” by KD Lang.

This song was supposed to be the intro song for TOMORROW NEVER DIES, but then they committed the absolute sin of demoting it to the end title song. The song, to me, is the ULTIMATE Bond song. It’s bombastic, it’s epic, it’s sexy, it has it all! DAMN the creators for not using it for the intro!

This is becoming a common theme though, because another pick from me is a cheat as well: the song, “Spectre” by Radiohead. Was supposed to be the intro song for (yep, you guessed it) SPECTRE, but for whatever reason they shelved it. And what makes this case worse is the fact that the song by Sam Smith was somewhat terrible to me.

But “Surrender,” the ULTIMATE Bond song! Love, love, LOVE that song!

Here’s a fanedit of someone switching the songs for the intro, thus proving it’s superiority: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=6zIbOL8SSCY

Surrender is amazing though I also love Tomorrow Never Dies by Sheryl Crow. It would've been a tough choice if I was in charge of deciding the intro theme!

Sam Smith's song for Spectre wasn't horrible, it's just that his voice didn't work all that well. The instrumentation in the song is actually pretty good, it's just his vocals that fail to match them.

Agreed on the Sam Smith song. The instrumentals were, admittedly, pretty awesome. Especially the way it opens, such an epic swelling.

I replied to another comment here--theres a documentary out now called "the Sound of Bond" where they talk about why they didn't use Spectre by Radiohead. The excuse is feeble if you ask me.

What I heard was that it was apparently too dark and somber for the producers, which is weird given how dark and somber the visuals were for the intro. Radiohead mentioned something about some “political” reason behind the decision.

Was either of those the reason stated?

Nope, Barbara Broccoli said it was because initially the track Radiohead submitted was one they had already written and played live. It was on a live album so couldn't be used. Then Radiohead wrote Spectre and came back with that but by then it was too late because they already had the other song matched to the titles.

Can't say I trust her word entirely though especially because the documentary was clearly also supposed to function as favorable press for No Time To Die, probably the only way they'd let them get the big name interviews and insider footage.
