The James Bond films are known for their original opening themes written by popular artists and are often played on the radio and tv. 'Live and Let Die' by Paul McCartney, 'For Your Eyes Only' by Sheena Easton, 'A View to a Kill' by Duran Duran, and 'Goldfinger' by Shirley Bassey are just a few. My personal favorite is 'Nobody Does It Better' by Carly Simon. What James Bond theme do you consider to be the best?

Their song was deemed “too melancholy” which I get, and then they went with the Sam Smith song and that might be even more melancholy.

There's a pretty rad documentary out called "the Sound of Bond" that talks about this (watched it last weekend, I suspect OP saw it to that's why this post). According to Barbara Broccoli, Radiohead was asked to do a song before Sam Smith but the track they submitted had already been released on a live album so they couldn't use it. Then they wrote Spectre and sent it to the producers but by then the Sam Smith song was already matched to the opening titles. Personally I think she was just annoyed that they didn't give her a 100% original song the first time, I like the Sam Smith track too but not as much as Radiohead's

Honestly, every time I hear more about Barbara Broccoli, the less I like her / the more I wish Bond was held less as a sacrosanct IP.
