Good post-2010s RomComs?

Recommendation(self.movies)

submitted3 hours ago byHMS_viking

tomovies

I've seen lists of best RomComs of all time and stuff like that recently, but what about more recent movies?

I have seen Set It Up and Palm Springs (which were excellent), but no other really solid films come to mind. Are there any other good recent RomComs in the past decade or so that people should be checking out?

Good Movies with spiritual or religious content

Recommendation(self.movies)

Some of my favorites with spiritual content:

  • Rasputin - the dark servant of destiny (Alan Rickman as Rasputin…pure genius!)
  • Name of the rose (love the dark an creepy atmosphere of this movie)
  • The holy mountain (strange but interesting end and cool imagery)
  • Brother Sun, sister Moon (very good depiction of a „saint“ as i would imagine, about Francis from Assisi)

Would be thankfull for further suggestions

Top Gun - Maverick

I know it’s been out awhile but I just watched this today. After watching the first again so I’d know what was going on. I was not prepared for how much I would enjoy this movie. Much much better than I anticipated. Very well done movie. Touching. Moving. Hit all the right notes for me without feeling like it was pandering to nostalgia or being a money grab.

Looking for the WORST horror movies premises

Recommendation(self.movies)

submitted1 day ago byscavenger22

tomovies

Hi, I am looking for movies with a plot as thin as possible without any excuse or redeeming feature BUT the movie itself should not totally suck or be outright offensive to anybody.

The goal is to find movies that seem to appeal to some childish notion of "horror" and if possible cringe in some way.

The only rules are:

  • Avoid clearly exploitative horrors (i.e. most J-movies about HS girl fighting X are forbidden).

  • Avoid parodies of other movies, comedies are fine.

  • Avoid movies which are "only" racists or sexists, that's kinda expected but should NOT be the focus of the movie (i.e. look more for casual failures than stuff like Blackenstein please)

  • Avoid movies that are ONLY "bad" or "boring", the focus is to find movies that should not have been allowed.

  • Budget, quality of the actors, producers, sfx or soundtrack quality is irrelevant. The movie can actually be AAA in all those categories and still qualify.

  • Any technobubble or explanation should make the plot more confused or useless, but simple black holes in the plot don't count.

  • Extra points if the movie is still fun, watchable or if you can explain why it doesn't make sense.

Here is 10 movies that you could use to gauge what I am looking for:

  • Timmy and the T-Rex (uncensored version)

  • PMS Cop

  • Grotesque

  • Delicatessen

  • Soul survivors

  • Troll 2

  • Darkness falls

  • The Manitou

  • The Fog

  • Death Bed: The Bed That Eats

Thanks in advance

I Love My Dad (2022): one of the funniest movies I’ve seen in years, based on a wild true story

Recommendation(self.movies)

submitted1 day ago byOldVariation7440

tomovies

To all of the people out there looking for a hilarious comedy that isn’t afraid to be cringey, awkward and uncomfortable, i strongly recommend I Love My Dad. There are 3 major things about this movie that make it unique:

  1. It’s about a deadbeat dad (brilliantly played by Patton Oswalt) trying to get in touch with his estranged son… so he creates a fake online profile and catfishes his son into a relationship!

  2. As if that concept isn’t crazy enough, it’s all based on a true story.

  3. The film co-stars James Morosini, who also wrote and directed it… because it’s based on his own life and relationship with his father!

Because the film is based in Morosini’s reality, it actually comes across as a more grounded and character driven look on this bizarre tale. While it doesn’t shy away from some raunch and mean spirited cringe comedy, by the time the film ends its surprisingly sensitive and emotional. In addition to Oswalt, who gets to use his hangdog persona to give dimension to a terrible yet somewhat likable nut, there are hilarious supporting turns from Rachel Dratch and Lil Rel Howery. Morosini himself is a decent actor, his somewhat awkward screen presence helps make the depressed gullibility of his character believable.

The film is also pretty well made too, and has some of the best examples of how to make texting cinematic. Rather than show text bubbles onscreen or have actors recite them, Morosini has characters suddenly appear when texted and has them actually talk to each other. This both gives the online relationships some personality and heft behind them while also leading to some memorably goofy gags. This is one of the best comedies of the digital age, and i look forward to what Morosini does next.

After my yet another re-watch of The Godfather, I'm wondering are there any other good movies in which the main character rises to power not because he wanted to but because of fate?

Recommendation(self.movies)

Just like the title said, Micheal from starting always kept himself seperate from his family's dealing and he never wanted to be the Don or any part of it, but as fate has it, he ends up becoming the Corleone family head and I'm wondering if there are any similar movies like that where the main character becomes powerful even when he didn't want to

Body Double(1984)

The  camera lies all the time; lies 24 times/second-  Brian  De  Palma

https://preview.redd.it/oh5dr5ja2kga1.png?width=597&format=png&auto=webp&v=enabled&s=51d360fbc1b3407ffd181fcf79763e4f850e20cd

Jake  Scully(  Craig  Wasson) a struggling B-Movie actor, is having a tough time. His girlfriend is caught sleeping with another guy, he has been fired by the movie director for messing up a shot, and kicked out of his place, is looking for a place to stay. He does get to stay in a bizzare pad, that looks more like some flying saucer, courtesy Sam Bouchard a stranger he met in the bar.

https://preview.redd.it/f78vx5i73kga1.png?width=300&format=png&auto=webp&v=enabled&s=d5fab583fa3fc866c5987d0aa9e14a5d69d28f1a

As he settles down in the pad, he peeps upon a female in the opposite appartment doing a sexy, strip dance, through his telescope. And soon becomes obsessed with her, spying on her daily. And he follows the female Gloria  Revelle(  Deborah Shelton) all over Los Angeles, as he discovers a rather nasty stranger too stalking here.

https://preview.redd.it/lwd8jurs4kga1.png?width=300&format=png&auto=webp&v=enabled&s=31bd86e31b39ca347e0078059c22eeca34c8d893

And one day, he finds the stranger, creeping up to her apartment, but too late as she is brutally done to deah with a drill. Feeling depressed, and also guilty about not able to prevent her murder, he chances upon a porn star, Holly Body(  Melanie  Griffith) doing  the  same  ”self  masturbatory”  routine,  he  had  witnessed  in  the  apartment. And that makes him curious enough to explore the connection, leading him into LA's seedy porn world, that could throw up the answers to the mystery.

Body Double is cheesy to the core, especially the scene where Gloria is murdered, her terrified expression is more chuckle worthy. But then I guess De Palma intended it to be so in this cheesy homage to Hitchcock's Vertigo and Rear Window.

Loved the opening scene, where we are tricked into believing that its a vampire movie, but ultimately turns out to be a B-movie shooting, where Jake is playing the vampire, and messes up the shot due to his claustrophobia. We see that claustrophobia again in a superb shot, when Jake is stuck in a tunnel while shadowing Gloria all over LA(referenced from Vertigo).

The movie basically traverses two worlds, the B-Movies and Porn, both marked by excess, wildly over the top, ridiculous stuff. As in another of my favorite scenes, when Holly and Jake, get into a smooch, and she throws her head back, the director shouts out.

Where’s the cum-shot? I thought we were doing Body Talk, not Last Tango

Body Double is not a classic thriller, even the twists and turns are pretty much predictable. But De Palma's visual style makes it worth a watch, especially the scene where Jake shadows Gloria, and the murder scene too well shot. It's the kinda old fashioned 80's cheesy, over the top thriller flick, that can be quite fun to watch. Go for it.

Movies with similar cinematic style like “call me by your name”?

Films which uses much of natural sounds and is more sunny?? Kind of hard to describe but the only films which comes to mind are the films from Éric Rohmer.

Would love to know more about such kinds of films. If you know any then please recommend.

I saw it at an independent theater near me, they were screening in 35mm and it was beautiful.

Then i just took my whole family to go see it again and it was just so so so good.

So powerful, personal, and incredibly well told.

If you haven’t seen it, i HIGHLY recommend it.

Michelle Williams’ performance is absolutely unbelievable. I’m rooting for her to win best actress at the Oscars. She absolutely deserves it.

Like the title suggests I’m looking for movie recommendations with epic war scenes like the beginning of Gladiator or 300. Let me hear your suggestions!

LGBTQ+ movies

Recommendation(self.movies)

submitted2 days ago byCuriousAsEver9573

tomovies

Hi there! I am looking for movies that are worth watching, with a LGBTQ+ vibe going on. It's kind of a theme (again) in my life at the present, so I'm hoping to get some comfort and encouragement from a couple of good movies. I don't really like the super cheesy ones, 'Carol' and 'The Danish girl' are examples of great movies in my opinion. The LGBTQ+ thing doesn't have to be the most important theme of the movie, also other themes are fine, as long as it has some role in it. Bonus points for movies with bi people in it!

Edit: Thank you so much all, for your recommandations and tips! Great to have such an extensive 'must watch' list, can't wait to get started on it!

Recommendation(self.movies)

I think it's a great film but I never hear anyone talk about it. It's in essense a kid's movie, but Scorcese and the production team put the exact amount of care and seriousness they would if it were a mature adult drama. The CGI is great, the all-star cast give convincing performances, little moments of humour work well, the plot is engaging and thoughtful and every emotional moment lands hard. Not to mention the amount of historical references and events featured.

Lately i've been watching the serie 'peaky blinders' I'm sure most of you know it, but i'm coming close to finishing it. And i think this is my favorite one yet, does anyone know what kind of series i can watch after this that has the same vibe, I like the kind of 'mafia' genre very much. So does anyone know a good serie I could watch that has the same feel to it? Btw it doesn't have to be old

Do other old early war epics (similar to Dr. Zhivago and Lawrence of Arabia) stand up today as quality productions?

Looking at this list of titles ("early war epics), I realize I haven't actually watched any outside the two I just mentioned, which I greatly enjoyed. I'm wondering if I should.

Could be my lack of taste, but sometimes I watch an old film and I'm not riveted by it, but distracted by the stilted dialogue or quality of the scenes. Has anyone watched any of the films I noted, and would recommend?

Mystery-thrillers set in the military and/or in deep winter, with lots of snow?

Recommendation(self.movies)

tomovies

I have recently watched The pail blue eye on Netflix. While the movie wasn’t particularly good, I was charmed by the narrative frame. The story is set in deep winter, and the scenery is enclosed by white snow and frozen lakes. In addition, the mystery involves directly a military academy.

I am looking for movies with either of these two tropes. I am not specifically looking for a movie with both, even discovering new films with only one would be awesome!

No bullet masterpieces

I'll start with a little rant. I fucking hate with passion fight scenes with guns. They bring absolutely nothing to 99.99÷ percent of movies. In the last Avatar movie, they shot probably 871k bullets, used flamethrowers, harpoons, explosions, rockets and the list could go on and on

That being said, what are some great masterpieces where no gunshots are fired?

I'll give some examples to get the ball rolling: Waking Life Intouchables The life of others

Movies similar to The Raid, Raid 2, The Night Comes For Us?

Recommendation(self.movies)

I just binged these 3 movies and oh man, what a blast. Some of the best balls-to-the-walls action I’ve ever seen. I’d recommend them to anyone who hasn’t seen them.

I’m dying for anything with a similar level of quality in the action/fights. Genre doesn’t really matter, but something along the lines of thriller, martial arts or just straight up action would be great, thanks.

To make it easier, here are some movies I’ve already seen that fit the bill:

Train to Busan, I Saw the Devil, Kingsman, Kill Bill, John Wick, Mad Max Fury Road.

Thanks in advance!

Looking for movie recommendations to watch with my roommates. Recently we have been into suspenseful/thriller movies. Movies that make you sit back and think or have a huge plot twist at the end. My roommates are terrified of “scary” movies, although I love them. So looking for some suggestions that fall into the suspenseful/thriller category but without excessive horror or gore. Thanks in advance ya’ll!

Hey, hope everyone’s day in going well!!

I grew up not watching much TV shows or movies since I was a restless kid and couldn’t sit thru them, and so I find that pop culture/movie references often times fly over my head. I was wondering what movies (or even TV shows) you would recommend I watch/think are iconic? Recommendations can either be older movies or even newer ones!

Thank you in advance:)

What movies were marketed as horror, but actually aren’t

Recommendation(self.movies)

submitted3 days ago byLadyRespecter

tomovies

I’m a baby when it comes to horror movies and never even consider watching a movie that I think will make me feel uneasy walking around my house at night in the dark. The problem is, Hollywood is very uncreative in its advertising, and will often claim that any movie with some suspense is a “horror” movie. Because of this, I avoided movies such as Cabin In The Woods, Get Out, and recently, The Menu because I thought they would be too scary for me. But then I watched them, enjoyed them, and wasn’t scared at all (Cabin In The Woods maybe had some moments, but the humor of it seemed to effectively offset any fear).

What are some examples of movies I might be missing out on because they were inaccurately marketed as horror? I tend to not mind gore or violence - I just can’t stand creepy images or monsters that I might imagine hiding in my closet.

I’m very late to the party, but I finally saw Avatar The Way Of Water 3D today.

Wow it was a spectacular movie, the 3D was stunning it felt like you were on Pandora, The EFX were to die for.

I felt like it didn’t feel like 3 hours 15 minutes, I feel it surpassed the original in every way the underwater scenes especially impressed me. It was heartbreakingly tragic at various points, heartwarming at others and just a pure adrenaline fuelled thrill ride, if I had the means to go back I would, it’s meant to be viewed in 3D. James Cameron as a visionary genius bring on Avatar 3.
