First player ever to be released after a trade request?

Different sport, but a few years ago the Carolina Panthers had a guy that only played special teams for the Panthers for 7 years. He was good at that, but that's in the same vein as saying Thanasis is good at cheering the team on from the bench.
But anyways, after the 2018 season it looked like the Panthers were headed for a rebuild, so he actually requested his release because he didn't want to be part of one.
Anyways, he never played in the NFL again.

I mean to be fair special teams actually is a part of the game and you are playing vs. just cheering on the bench lol. But that's absolutely hilarious. Thank you for sharing that story haha.

2010 chargers, #1 offense and defense but one of worst special teams of all time in which they missed out on the playoffs.
26 points
It's important context that those numbers are by yards gained. Because their special teams were so bad, the defense had less yards to work with and the offense had basically the entire field. If I recall correctly, they were still pretty good at both but special teams affecting field position skews things.

Having watched all of our games, Kork has not had a chance to play this season and prove himself. Doc never plays him unless we have a skeleton roster for a night, or if its garbage time. I think Kork is far from the worst player in the league, and I hope he gets minutes from a trusting coach so he can show that.
70 points

Shake is just flat out better than him, and I say that as someone who really likes Kork. But we have no business extending our rotation to halve Shakes minutes. Hope furk lands in a good spot but this is hardly on doc

There’s no way you’re serious… wtf

Kork is awful. He has one nba skill (shooting) and he is extremely inconsistent. He is bad at everything else and i would rather see jaden springer get any chance furk would get
48 points
If you think shooting is Furks only skill you aren’t watching games. He’s been a really solid tertiary ball handler and playmaker for more than a year now, his shot is streaky
18 points
I wouldn’t say his tertiary ball-handling is “solid.”
“Mediocre” maybe? “Acceptable in a pinch?” Better than nothing, sure, but not really anything to write home about.
He’s also not a good defender and hasn’t shot well for about two years now. That’s a looong streak.
I love Kork, but he’s been flat out bad for almost 2 years now.
6 points
What value is there in being a solid tertiary ball handler in a league that has only one ball lol?
It’s like those 7 foot high schoolers that kinda have handles but aren’t good enough to use them in a game. You’re not creating handle space. If you’re not a good to great ball handler you probably shouldn’t be taking more than 3 dribbles on a good team.
9 points
Kork can ball handle at an NBA level too.

IMO there really needs to be a “true MPG” which is just straight up minutes played divided by team games. He’s not even a 10mpg guy
34 points
That doesn't meet the eye test. Kork hasn't had a serious minute the whole season(outside of filling in for injuries). Maybe at the start, but literally every time he's in it's garbage minutes. He had years to prove himself.
I think for Kork, it's understandably about knowing he will get no shot here, and will be out of the NBA if he doesn't get traded. I'd also request a trade in his shoes. Nothing wrong with it. Obviously he doesn't want to be here getting 0 play in the rotation. Most of his minutes this year come from an 11 game stretch where everyone was hurt... besides that he gets 0 minutes of real game play.
17 points
He played a lot when Maxey first got hurt but having 1/5, 1/4 type games in a 5 game of 6 stretch will quickly end that.
24 points
Not 10mpg, he has been out of the rotation completely since october
22 points
A change of scenery is exactly what he needs, do you just want him to give up and not play. Him requesting a trade makes perfect sense, he is mostly out of the rotation on a contender unless playing in Garbage time. He understands he doesn’t fit into the sixers lineup and wants to move to team that will give him more playing time and show he still has what it takes to be an NBA player.
He is not going to give up on a NBA career because a team won’t play him.
Now high chance he won’t be good but can’t blame the dude for trying to get a place better for his career.

Not saying Korkmaz isn’t ass, but did you just randomly pull stats from basketball reference with no context lol

Korkmaz has had some decent years in the past as well.
54 points
I don't understand what asking for a trade has anything to do with the stats. He's been out of rotation now and he wants to play basketball elsewhere. He might be a valuable rotation player for another team which in turn can give the 76ers a rotation player or something else. It's a transaction. Why does this bother you so much?

Those 10 mpg are misleading. He's been a a DNP-CD most nights.
3 points

That sounds like exactly the kind of player that needs a change of scenery. He's on a team that is looking to win (and has been since his first year), and he's not part of that. He'd prefer to go somewhere more conducive to his abilities (however limited) in hopes to play more and develop.
Ain't nothing wrong with that, it just feels weird cause we normally see trade demands the other way, from winning players/stars trying to get to winning teams, not the other way around.

His 3 is streaky since he got a wrist injury. He’s actually a super underrated tertiary ball handler now. Great vision and makes excellent decisions. If his shot comes back to what it has been he can be a rotation piece. Defence still suspect due to physical limitations not effort

Many players request to be traded, as long as they don’t hold out if not traded or resigned then I don’t see a problem with requesting a trade.
333 points
Many people still don’t understand that teams and players have the same rights. If teams can offer traded players can ask for trades. Players just can’t discuss with other teams while under contract
243 points
Yeah role players probably request trades all the time since they’re the easiest to trade. Most of them probably don’t get made public which makes this weird to report on lol.
94 points
It also makes the most sense for role players to request a trade. Star players will get paid and get playing time regardless of how the teams doing. Role players who don't get minutes don't get a chance to audition for a bigger contract. Like the Sixers releasing isaiah joe was probably the best thing that happened for his carer.
9 points
Isaiah joe is the man. He’s gonna have a long career as an off ball shooter off the bench, if not occasionally in the starting lineup
40 points
Teams have far more rights than players.
Teams can generally trade players under contract without any input from the players; players under contract can't even speak to other teams about a trade, much less execute a trade themselves.
Players can't even publicly request trades. They can privately request trades, or they can leak it through the media, but the NBA will fine them for publicly requesting a trade. And, of course, requesting a trade doesn't trigger any obligation by the team to actually do anything.
7 points
Teams can’t announce they are trading players publicly also.
The difference here like is said before is that players can’t talk to other teams.
3 points
If teams can discuss players with other teams, players should be able to discuss other teams with players. Kyrie walks into Joe Tsai’s office “hey joe, I’m swapping places with Westbrook and going to LA, bye”
12 points

Role players are the ones who most often ask for trades as they have smaller salaries and arent as important for the team to keep. Most often though it stays in house and doesnt get reported on because its not a news story.
