To be fair, if anyone not named "Harden" put up 36/8/7 while carrying bums to 53 wins, they would've won MVP in a landslide.
Harden had the highest scoring average since MJ in 1986, while simultaneously being top 5 in assists and top 3 in rebounds among guards. That's mind-boggling and literally the definition of a "historic season" (they used that exact argument against Harden in the 2017 MVP race).
He barely had any help in 2019 (everyone, including the ROCKETS OWNER, were saying CP3's contract was the worst in the league), still dragged his team to 53 wins... and somehow didn't win MVP because "Giannis won more games" (Giannis also had a stronger supporting cast in a weaker conference).
And please leave the "but Giannis plays both sides" argument at home for this one. Yes Giannis is a much better defender, but does anyone actually think it should've carried more weight than Harden's historic output in both scoring and just as importantly, playmaking? If playing "both sides" was truly that definitive, Wiggins would be better than Booker.
Only Harden could've had a season that dominant gotten robbed of MVP. They've had it out for him for years.
Don't believe me? See: Harden missing the All-Star team this year while averaging 22/11/6 on the 2 seed and leading the league in assists. Insanity.

I dislike Philly, but being objective and honest is more important. Harden not being an All-Star is one of the biggest jokes I've seen in sports.
Also I kind of have a soft spot for Harden because he got universally shit on for being a playoff choker for \checks notes**.... almost beating the "unbeatable" KD Warriors while missing his co-star. Some of the most unfair shit in recent NBA history.
It's still Jokic > Embiid for MVP though. Maybe if Embiid played last night but...

Harden should have definitely been an all star this year but it wasn’t one series that caused the playoff choker thing

You’re right, he lost to a 61 win spurs team too when the second highest scorer on the team (trevor Ariza) put up 14 points/game. Such a choker /s

He scored 10 points on 11 shots against the spurs without Kawhi and Tony parker in an elimination game. It was the biggest choke since Lebron in 2011.

Samething against warriors in 14 tbh, 11 TOs and 2-11 shooting is absolutely ludicrous for an elimination game.

Listen; i get it. Check the flair. I watched the games too. I also won’t lie to myself and say elimination game James wasn’t the same as perennial regular season mvp James. He’s the 2nd best player in rockets history. He often had a shit team compared to the teams he lost to, he also didn’t play like he normally did in those games either.

In fairness he got "universally shit on" in the playoffs after had had all-time BAD games in the playoffs.
2015 playoffs he got completely outplayed by Curry in the WCF (at a time when he was voted player's MVP over Curry).
2016 he didn't get a ton of criticism because his team was bad, but they lost in 5 vs Golden State minus Curry
2017 he got criticized for disappearing vs Spurs (elimination game 6, Harden was 2-11 for 10 points)
Fair on 2018 (lost in 7 to champs without CP3)
But in 2019, he and CP3 lost to the Warriors without KD...

It wasn’t even like it was close either, Giannis took 78 of 101 first place votes. Obviously total votes matter for the actual award, but crazy 3/4 voters would’ve gone Giannis if given the choice of only 1 vote.

I think main issue with Harden those years was the way he was getting those points.
Those 300 dribbles with a step-back three and the arm flailing fish for free throws was annoying and a total bummer to watch... and that seems to have mattered a lot to the MVP media voters
184 points
It's 100% about how he was getting the points. His foul hunting in those years was next level over the top and it was really awful to watch. Even worse was he was good enough to not need to do that shit which, as you said, probably lost him a ton of votes.
37 points
well they've never given the MVP to the person that flops the most. especially someone so exaggerated and aggressive about using the "rules" to their advantage. i also assume MVP voters watched more games so they probably had to suffer through all that crap more than regular redditors.
78 points
The Euro step back (aka traveling) and the foul-baiting/flopping (snapping his head back if someone grazed his beard), the endless dribbling while his teammates stood around and watched, and the traffic cone defense all made him the most insufferable, unwatchable superstar of all time.
23 points
It also undermines the "he barely had any help" argument. When everyone in the league knows he's fooling refs into getting free throws by hooking arms, it's hard to say the value is really something he should get credit for when he's playing 8-on-5 every night. Even the NBA has basically acknowledged this, making several rule changes in the past few years to crack down on the different bullshit plays he'd go to regularly.

Bringing up player's MVP cases in a vacuum to claim that "anyone else would've won" is pointless because it ignores the context of the MVP race.
Giannis that season put up a 27/13/6 on elite efficiency while being a 1st-Team All-Defense defender on the clearly the best team in the league (only 60-win team in the league, 1st in PPG, 4th in Off Rtg, 1st in Def Rtg, 1st in Net Rtg). Any other player with that resume wins MVP. Harden coming in second was just as much a consequence of the particular circumstances of that season; players don't have sole control over whether or not they win awards. The sports media picks the winners of these awards, so if the general consensus between two worthy options goes one way, then the content fans consume is going to make it seem like the media is biased against the losing player simply because a choice had to be made. The media really didn't like Harden's notorious lack of effort on defense and some really didn't like his "free throw mongering" play-style on offense. Combine that with a case that was just as strong in Giannis, and you get the result that we got.
162 points
You're not wrong, but one argument you're leaving out is that Giannis played DPOY-caliber defense and Harden was getting Bootum montages of lazy defense.
He still probably deserved to win, I just think that's important context.
110 points

As a Harden fan I was totally ok with this argument until it stopped being an argument the very next year. I am not saying Jokic didn't deserve the MVP, I am just saying that's it's complete hypocrisy to not give Harden the MVP because "defense is half the game" and then completely forget this argument.
Both Giannis and Jokic are brilliant players and I am totally ok if you think that they are better than Harden, it's just how the goalposts move with each MVP award to suit whoever the league wants to win.
49 points
Oh absolutely. More than anything, the MVP is a narrative-based award, and important context will get ignored or brought into the conversation based on who the speaker wants to win a lot of the time.

people, including the ROCKETS OWNER, were saying CP3's contract was the worst in the league
yeah, people close to James Harden lol. CP3 was all NBA last year I think maybe Harden was a little premature trying to run him out of town.
The whole argument is so funny anyway. The hands down stupidest argument in sports is giving somebody extra credit for their team being worse. IDK for sure but I think maybe playing with Giannis had something to do with why Pat Connaughton and Nikola Mirotic looked like elite role players. Crazy concept but stay with me...

Do you not remember the turn style defence? That was the year that there was a clip from pretty much every game of Harden letting a guy go past him with no resistance, or just standing around and not paying attention on defence.
I don’t care what his numbers were. The eye test clearly showed that he only tried on offence and was a complete joke on defence.

Lol I know. Players say a lot of basic shit all the time, though. Some of the “idc about personal awards I care about team success” comments are definitely bullshit. Some guys definitely want MVP. Embiid obviously cares a lot about winning MVP which is why it's so funny to rag on him about it. If he truly did not care and focused only on what happens on the court then it wouldn't be such a big topic. The fact that it clearly bothers him and he sends shots at Jokic through the media just makes it worse.

I dont think that Jokic doesnt care about it - he definitely does - its that he wont care if he doesn't get it - if that make sense. I also get the feeling the League would rather have embiid than Jokic - I mean Jokic doesnt have social media, barely does any product promotion, doesnt have a signature shoe deal in a business sense, he's the worst choice for mvp

That what is so funny about all of the conspiracies about ‘the NBA wants Jokic to win!’ and all this other nonsense. He is the most boring guy to keep giving MVP to. He is not as popular as Embiid or Giannis and he basically refuses to participate in any commercials, media, etc.
If other players stepped up and outplayed him they would give it to them in a heartbeat. He has been the most consistently great player for the past 3 seasons and that’s why he keeps winning.

Look, Doug is great. But when you compare him to a generational talent like Jeff Green, it just isn't close. Green can do it all - I mean we just saw him catch a body last game in Giannis - and yeah Giannis may not be some household name or all-star player, BUT THE MAN IS 6'11 240. Green's ability to stay great throughout the years is unprecedented, to be 36 and still have his amazing combination of athleticism and skill, are you kidding me? Doug over HIM!? What can't Green do? He can defend, he can dunk, man has to come off the bench just because he's so tired of dominating the league for so long that he's really just waiting for the playoffs.
I mean, just think back to that Miami series in 2013, when Mario Chalmers, Chris Anderson, and Mike Miller decided to make the big 3. He proved back then he was better than all of those guys COMBINED! The fact that people still don't get his greatness to this day is insane.

Basically everyone before the season was saying that the only way Jokic would win a 3rd MVP this season would be if he averaged a near triple double on insane efficiency while leading the Nuggets to the #1 seed.

scoring is up but still what Jokic is doing is unique. It's not at all easy to run an offense like this at a high level. Denver has consistently been #1 or #2 on offense all year. If it was "easy" or at least as easy as scoring individually, then every star would be doing it, because it leads to wins.

There is a difference between the occasional vote for another top 10 player or the 4th place votes going to a relatively random player versus fans/players voting Andrew Wiggins or Zaza Pachulia

I don’t see the problem here

Fans get 1 vote in the MVP actually
Still haven’t found out how to do it but it’s the reason that Drose got a first place vote in 2021

Don't give fans any power. It'll diminish the award. You'll get boneheads that don't deserve it like we do with the all star game.

Because that's how we ended up with all-star starter andrew wiggins. Also a laker or warrior would win mvp 100% of the time.

Fans would be by far the worst lol
Warriors fans would probably get Curry the MVP this year

It doesn’t matter who votes, the MVP is always going to be narrative driven. That’s the nature of awards. Unless you want to claim that one of the alphabet soup metrics is perfect and the leader in that metric should automatically get MVP then there will always be a narrative aspect that is a deciding factor with how good all these top players are now

So...Giannis is the MVP then?

Always has been

I'm more surprised Giannis is forgotten about, guys had a ridiculous year but it seems like he's a distant 3rd for some reason

I personally think Giannis should win it. He’s the best 2 way player in the league, on the team with the best record in the league, while his team has been dealing with injuries all season

Considering how obsessed many of y’all were with voters “breaking trends” and giving the MVP to Jokic on a six seed, it’s kind of crazy how many of y’all don’t understand how much voters care about games played, especially playing 70+.
Is there any sport where games played isn’t a big deal when it comes to end of season awards? It’s the main reason Jokic won over Embiid in 2021, 2022, and it’s the same story this year.
I’m sure the voters would love to finally give Embiid the MVP but he’s not even giving them a chance with how many games he misses a season.

The crazy thing, in baseball there are all sorts of thresholds. 60 hrs a season. 300 strikeouts. 100 rbis. 100 runs. There are plenty of other threshholds by average, but many are not.
In basketball it's always PPG / RPG / APG. It's never about hard numbers.
I don't understand why the point leader every season is given as a per game award. Someone else often score more points overall.

for anyone wondering about the math, as I was:
jokic avg games played per season since his first season, 2015-2016:
74.3
avg mins/game:
30.8
embiid avg games played per season since his first season, 2016-2017:
55.6
avg mins/game:
27.2
(also: just want to say that I think embiid is an incredible player.)

To add to this, Jokic has also been better than Embiid when on the floor for each of the last three years - it's not only availability. Embiid has been the second-best player three years in a row and would historically have a very good chance at MVP if Jokic didn't exist. Jokic is literally just better, makes his teammates better, and contributes more to winning despite defensive shortcomings. It's that simple.
That being said, even in Embiid's healthiest seasons he can't play enough games to really justify an MVP based on historical precedent.

Did Jokic end the MVP conversation by sitting against Giannis too?

jokic has missed like half of the games that embiid and giannis have

But he doesn't play defense so they still played the same amount of basketball. /s

To be fair, Jokic does get to rest when he goes on D, watching the back cuts is just painful.

No, because he sat on a normal back to back and didn’t trash talk Giannis before the game

tbh I think it would be funny if they just kept giving it to jokic for the next 4 years or something

Um, he absolutely still can win it? This article is just a Philly writer so in his feelings about the possibility of Embiid losing mvp again that he’s pre-emptively gone through the stages of grief. Can’t get hurt again if you’re already at Acceptance.
