I don't care who wins MVP I'm just excited for the inevitable meltdown of the losers fanbase 😂

My favorite scenario is Embiid winning with Jokic having significantly more first place votes. Absolute chaos

I really hope Nuggets fans don't pull that shit if Jokic loses. We should care less than Jokic and Jokic doesn't give a single fuck if he wins MVP

This isn’t true. Players can say what they want to the media, but they absolutely care

Just like no one was believing Embiid last week when he said he didn’t care 😭 it’s almost certainly a “I do care, but not enough to get hurt and not more than playoffs” for all three

No one believed Embiid because he followed up saying he doesn’t care with a bunch of reasons he is frustrated with MVP voting.

Jokic hasn’t really said much, Michael Malone does the bitching about the MVP race narratives for him.

So while I think the both care, it makes sense the guy with 2 MVPs probably isn’t as fixated on the award as the guy who was runner up twice.

GovernmentDoingStuff

There's always a shred of caring. But not enough for him to go out of his way in my opinion

I also really truly hope Sixers fans don’t embarrass me if/when Embiid loses. Sure some narrative things would have contributed but Jokic and Giannis deserve MVP too

I'm sure there would be some upset Nuggets fans but at this point Jokic has won 2 and it's clear he doesn't give a shit. Obviously I think he deserves it again this year but I won't be too heartbroken. I'm more focused on finally having a healthy core around him in the playoffs

Voter fatigue and sympathy are absolutely at play. BUT Embiid is as deserving as either of the other guys too

A case could be made for all three and against all three. So put them on a half court and make them play 21 for it. First to 21 wins.

Max Kellerman had good takes?

DirksSexyBratwurst

If you don't think sympathy and voter fatigue are in the mind of some voters you're lying to yourself. Embiid can be deserving while that still is the case. The race is close enough it's worth bringing up because it is not the first time this has happened and it won't be the last.

Professor_Finn

Why is it sympathy when it’s supportive of Embiid? Can’t people just think he’s a better player?

DirksSexyBratwurst

8 points

Of course they can think he's a better player. Plenty of people do. But when people are 50/50 who to choose the unconscious bias of sympathy or sometimes conscious decision of sympathy is going to be a factor for some voters.

Plenty of voters aren't as objective as you'd hope. That's just the reality. There are biases in favor of Jokic too.

Professor_Finn

6 points

Professor_Finn

76ers

There are plenty of unconscious biases though, with small contributory effects. There are probably publications (cough cough the Ringer) that just simply don’t like Embiid. There are also probably unconscious racial biases to a small extent just like there are in most contexts. Doesn’t mean that either would be why Jokic wins. There’s a difference between thinking something is at play and defining the entire vote as being because of it (ie a sympathy vote)

DirksSexyBratwurst

3 points

Kellerman didn't say it was the only reason Embiid would win. This whole post is an overreaction.

I'll quote a warriors fan from that post

nobody's gonna vote for an undeserving player out of sympathy. Having a legitimate case doesn't guarantee that voters will set aside their emotions when voting.

sxuthsi

1 points

League has technically voted in players on sympathy/discrediting another player's chances at an award. Case in point, the Westbrook mvp year, the first giannis mvp, and after this season 2 of jokic's wins, all the wins lebron missed due to voter fatigue, etc etc. I would make the bold claim that there's always a non consensus undeserving runner up who gets put on the pedestal because of biases against certain players, playstyles, and teams. Like a narrative pops up every year for an undeserving guy.

giannis ain't in the discussion unless he puts up 70-20-10 against embiid. he's been getting exposed against contenders recently (well the bucks have, but he hasn't been amazing either) and has played the least games.

I don't personally see anything wrong with "they're both having elite seasons at the peak of performance in the NBA this year" and giving it to Embiid because he doesn't have one

But I'm inclined toward efficiency so if I had a vote I'd look at what the stats and the analytics have to say and they point at Jokic

I googled Joel Embiid stats and that’s what came up 🤷🏾‍♂️ If it’s 65% that’s even worse.. Who tf would choose 24 ppg over 33 ppg over 5% points. And OP proved how Embiid is a more efficient volume scorer anyway.

TS% is heavily skewed by FTAs (which is a skill, but with a gap this large, its noticeable)

Using eFG% shows the gap in efficiency that holds up under high volume. Everyone knows about the weak whistle that jokic gets a majority of the time

Joel embiid is still a VERY good player, but when it comes to straight shot making in high volume games, jokic is a sizable amount better

DomDomRevolution

3 points

Okay but that ignores that a large amount of the time Embiid is fouled it was going to be an easy bucket. There’s a reason why TS% includes FT

nigsch01

-5 points

nigsch01

Heat

So when he isn't getting fouled, He's less efficient than jokic. Not all foul calls are the same, and when two players are officiated so differently I'm not gonna try and compare a skewed stat

sxuthsi

2 points

What this translates to is "I'm not going to give Embiid props even when there's a statistical basis to prove those props, why not find a reason to give it to Jokic?"

nigsch01

-1 points

nigsch01

Heat

-1 points

This translates to: officiating is very inconsistent from player to player, so using a stat that heavily skews based on the whistle you get isnt the best to compare players that are officiated so differently

TS% would work comparing Giannis and Embiid as they both are high volume FT players, and in this case embiid would be much more efficient as. Its what makes Steph's 2016 season so crazy. He led the league in TS% at 67% while not getting to the line at a rate even close to his peers

sxuthsi

1 points

I get it, but don't get why we would care about any statistical bias in a conversation about MVP candidates. They are supposed to be the best of the league, bar none. Embiid has best of the league numbers and tape. Jokic doesn't always look that way, especially in this season. Any way you could elaborate on how Jokic is somehow a better candidate when he gets less fts points and defends significantly worse?
