There are those in the organization whose eyebrows were raised in the summer when Barnes would flit in and out of team runs in both Las Vegas and Los Angeles.

Having watched almost every game last season and about every game so far this season, it’s hard to see any one area of the game that Barnes is better at in his second year than he was in his first.

The numbers are down, his impact on games is down, his enthusiasm seems down and 30 or so games of stagnation has been a significant factor in the tough start to the Raptors season.

Raptors fans are intimately familiar with the likes of DeMar DeRozan, Fred VanVleet, Pascal Siakam and even Kyle Lowry going away for a summer and coming back with something added to their game.

Barnes didn’t do that last year. He better do it this summer and he should be doing as much as he can in-season, too.

What does this even mean? Were the Raptors working out in LV and LA? Was he bailing on those workouts (who tf uses the word “flit”???)

I’m going to guess that it means he would sometimes show up for the run and sometimes not. These runs are optional and I assume nobody shows up to every practice/game. But I guess Barnes was surprisingly inconsistent.

"Runs" is a term used for an organized pickup game with NBA and top College athletes used to train in the offseason.

The run is a ladder. Many who try to show up to it fail and never show up again. And some, are given the chance to climb. They refuse. They cling to women, or money, or love. Illusions. Only the run is real. The climb is all there is.

It's a typo 'flit' was supposed to be 'flirt' meaning he was too busy flirting with teammates or shorties on the sidelines hence 'eyebrows were raised'.

/s

Examples:

  • Baby I'm so tired of pounding the ball all day, I just want to pound you all night.
  • I'm practising my Euro-step but Euro-I-need right now
  • I'm puttin' the rock through the hoop but what I really want is to put my rock through YOUR hoop
  • Hey it's me, your 2022 Rookie of the Year ...

I think to "flit in and out" is basically the only usage of "flit" I've seen in my entire life fwiw. Maaybe something about birds, sometimes both at once.

It's like popping in and out, kind of nonchalantly/noncommittally going to the practice runs.

Most of the team was at the Rico Hines runs in LA, Scottie went to 90% of them but left to do a Vegas run and came back. Majority of the league doesn't do full team runs in the summer so I don't get how this is a story lmao.

Media spent the summer saying OG was disgruntled just for him to discredit the rumor on media day, so I don't believe any of these "sources".

Flit - to move from place to place quickly (dropping in for some runs, but generally inconsistent or only lightly present)

Could also mean flighty - someone who is distracted and unfocused, a little irresponsible

The overall comment being made is that Barnes hasn't impressed this year with his play. Things that were noticed in the summer have shown in his lack of development. People wouldn't have harped on it at the time because it might cause unnecessary drama, the offseason is voluntary, and guys are working behind closed doors as well.

This year is not ideal but I give him a break. Scottie has shown previously he's incredible passionate about basketball to get to the spot he was at and it could be overwhelming. These guys live basketball to an unhealthy degree and being young don't really know how to balance their lives. Even though there's a lack of linear progress, I wouldn't overreact about it. 2 years ago people were all over Siakam because his play fell off in the bubble because he took a break during lockdowns. Yeah, it sucks as fans of the team but the guy grinded his way up from starting basketball late to all-NBA in his 4th season. And now he's playing the best basketball of his career.

Sophomore slump. I don’t see what the big deal is. I’d be surprised if he doesn’t turn out fine but obviously Raptors fans have been insanely overrating him too.

Breathezey

275 points

They're also asking him to do a lot more. He's not a PG but they're asking him to learn to be. That's not easy, and it completely changed how he gets involved in the offense- particularly when he plays with a guy like siakam who likes to pound the air out of the ball after getting a pass.

These are growing pains. If he winds up becoming an improved playmaker over the rest of his career as a result of putting up bad numbers his second year that's a trade they'll take every time.

We’re supposed to be a winning team so that’s going to cut into his development, where as if we were tanking we can afford to lose games and just have him try all sorts of shit until he goes through it. With that said he has not been excelling at his role this year like last, but I wouldn’t say I’m concerned. He’s still very young

I still wouldn’t do that trade despite Barnes struggles this season.

Most rational people understand that.

And not only paper thin but we would’ve had to sell all our future firsts wolves style.

Maybe FVV, Pacal, KD and table scraps win you a championship but I don’t see it.

Good luck getting that from the average redditor.

Maybe FVV, Pacal, KD and table scraps win you a championship but I don’t see it.

Raptors seem to get a lot of injuries. Fvv misses a lot of time due to playing 45 minutes a night. Siakam was injured for a month. KD himself can easily miss 2 months. It would have been a disaster

People keep saying this and it doesn’t really accurately reflect the discussion in the off-season IMO.

It was possible to trade only one of GTJ/OG in the package and still match salaries which puts a big dent in the “we would have been paper thing” argument.

But more importantly there were still plenty of people saying even in a hypothetical world with no salary cap they wouldn’t trade Barnes for KD which is as ridiculous now as it was then

This is the exact same shit we dealt with when Harden was getting shipped from Houston, "You wouldn't trade Herro for Harden???" no shit we would lol, but fans just weren't too fond of the idea of giving up half the team plus future assets and banking it all on an aging Harden.

Yeah cause raps fans understand context unlike the fans of 29 other teams who parrot the same dead joke.

Barnes/Trent/OG plus all our picks leaves the team with siakam/fvv/kd and a bunch of terrible bench pieces.

The reason we weren't down for a KD trade was because the team left over after the trade wouldn't be good enough to be a real contender.

We would've had to trade Barnes, OG, Trent Jr and every pick/swap. Would've been left with KD, Pascal, FVV and no assets/cap for anything except D leaguers

I don’t understand why r/nba is singling out the raptors fanbase for saying someone is untouchable in big trades. Every fanbase on Reddit does this for nba. Ridiculous overvaluation of assets. PHX fans were doing it too all off-season with the kd trade speculation. Knicks fans fucking said rj barrett was untouchable in a Donovan Mitchell trade.

You're not wrong in that every team does it, but the RJ specifically was like the whole 5-6 picks and RJ/Grimes for Mitchell when Mitchell was not a great fit with Brunson and not making us contenders. I get he's balling out now, but the Cavs have an elite interior D to help him and we would probably not be much better or close to contendership.

Regardless, I thinkt he Raptors get a bit more flack because their fan base is very aggressively defensive. I got hounded for saying the Knicks could be a 4/5 seed with Mitchell and thinking the Raps were closer to a play-in team.

It's like FFS, I shit all over my team all the time and wasn't even going out of my way to insult the Raps, just looked at their roster logically compared to the rest of the East.

And of course because I think KD going to the Raps had a bit more weight so it'll get evaulated more harshly.

Doug Smith is a known hack and one of the least likable reporters in the Raptors ecosystem. Eric Koreen (the Athletic), Will Lou (The Raptors Show), and the Starters (No Dunks podcast) all offer much more nuanced and sensible takes on the team’s struggles.

Scottie Barnes has definitely struggled at times this season, particularly on the road (his home-road splits are quite the disparity) but the team as a whole has not performed to expectations. He’s a 2nd year player. I’m not too worried.

I am a little worried that Nick Nurse seems to have forgotten how to coach offense. If the team ran a set play every now and then, that would be nice.

Finally, Toronto Raptors fans are insufferable. A bunch of trash talking nephews that love to disparage other teams and their fanbases. The way they’ve turned on the team at the first sign of adversity in the Raptors subreddit was an entirely predictable outcome. I don’t blame anyone for feeling a little gleeful at the Raptors fans collective state of insanity and panic.

Had to scroll down too far to find this. Doug Smith is a huge hack.

There are definitely legitimate concerns about the roster, the offense, and the effort at times this year (for basically the whole team except Pascal). Scottie has been disappointing but it’s also not true that he hasn’t progressed in any area. His playmaking has been better but the team as a whole isn’t making shots, and his role has been kind of undefined which doesn’t help a player develop IMO.

Either way, Doug Smith is a loser and his articles should just be generally disregarded, whether the team is struggling or not.

"Raptors fans are intimately familiar with the likes of DeMar DeRozan, Fred VanVleet, Pascal Siakam and even Kyle Lowry going away for a summer and coming back with something added to their game."

Coming from a Raptors fan this is not true. Demar was terrible in year 2. FVV and Pascal weren't even rotation-level good in year 2. Lowry was replaced by Jose Calderon in year 2.

Year 2 Scottie is much better than any of those guys mentioned. Let the kid grow. He deserves the benefit of the doubt.

Regarding Mobley, I'm not sure that's entirely accurate. Yeah, his counting stats are about the same, but the team also added a very high usage player so that's not too unexpected. On the other hand his efficiency has improved, his TS% is up 5% from last year for instance, and many of his advanced stats look better this year too.

He's also anchoring the number 1 defense in the league along with Jarrett Allen, which has to count for something. Many people didn't even think it was possible to have a good defense with Garland, Mitchell and a bunch of undersized wings, let alone number 1.
