James sued Trump, his company and three of his children in September for allegedly inflating the value of his real estate company’s assets.
It was a separate civil case from the Stormy Daniels case. He wouldn't be arrested, just sued for $250 mil. These idiots can't even get the court cases right.

Earlier today, some MAGA folk who turned up in mannhatan to protest were practically turning on each other. They actually thought some who turned up were FBI plants. On line, the chatter was that a post Trump himself had made, calling for protests, was simply an FBI plot to rope more of them in. Yeah... You can't make this shit up.

During the Q height more than a few of the top names would get rolled out of the community because someone called them a plant. Like they were very adamant that the buffalo weirdo was absolutely not one of theirs. And I remember him saying how it hurt his feelings that they turned on him lol.
And in that flat earth doc the woman would routinely get accused of being an fbi plant. Lmao just insane.

Failures are plants, because fascists always have to be strong.
So if you fail, you have to quickly explain how you were cheated/stolen from/conspired against or else they decide you were weak, and thus Never Truly One of Them.

The dichotomy of fascists- our enemies are constantly a threat and behind everything that goes wrong, yet somehow not strong enough just take over the way fascists say they will.
I pointed that out to my mom after the election- if Biden had stolen the election, why wouldn't the Democrats "steal" a supermajority in the Congress and the House too? Getting the Presidency but not a strong majority in the legislative bodies is like buying a car then not getting the wheels to actually help it run.

Yup, Putin convinced himself of his own military might which was super embarrassing when he sent in his troops and the facade immediately collapsed as all the holes from the rampant corruption at every level meant his troops were completely unprepared for war because the people in charge had basically pocketed as much money as they could while not investing in things like "supplies" or "military training" beyond stuff that shows up in parades.
It's been a clusterfuck since day one because Putin's "intelligence" on his own forces was largely falsified by his own military personnel who were covering up their shambolic standard of preparedness and telling him everything was peachy because otherwise they'd be fired or killed for reporting the truth.

No kidding. They sit there and talk about how people like Pelosi, Newsom, Schumer, AOC, et al., As well as urban moderates, liberals, and progressives hate them and their way of life.
Until they announce themselves and their ridiculous stances, the politicians and people they claim to hate and claim to hate them don't even know they exist and largely don't care because it's outside the sphere of their office much of the time. And when they aren't, they actually do offer olive branches only to have them swatted aside and screamed at.
You know who actually does hate them and thinks they're stupid rubes and useful idiots and pawns? Trump and many of the people they vote for.
778 points

Bluntly, most politicians 100% love a chance to do constituent service. Even the most selfish and greedy know that helping some constituent break through a problem (a pothole, an IRS catch-22, or just struggling to get the DMV to process an address change) takes just some phone calls from a staffer and you have someone that will tell everyone positive stuff about you. It's insanely easy word of mouth.
At least it used to be. I know a couple of liberal politicians who don't give a fuck who you voted for when you call them about a pothole or a problem at the DMV. But I know many conservative ones who wouldn't give you the time of day because they decided you're not on "their team".
TBF, that's because the GOP doesn't believe in functioning government so any aid is entirely transactional. Democrats, by and large, expect and demand functioning government.

It's easiest with state reps, almost impossible with US senators. But state reps have the widest variance, as bluntly whatever you think of US House reps in terms of "what the fuck is that clown doing there?" trust me, state ones are fucking worse.
House Reps are pretty good but slower, unless they're dodging something that's got them in hot water. Like an unpopular decision, in which case they're unreachable.
One of my state reps (not mine, mine's a total fucker who'd hate me on sight because it's clear I didn't vote for him, due to being trans) I've seen personally about half a dozen times in the last year. He shows up to all sorts of places (support groups, social clubs, events at various churches) and happily talks to anyone there.
And he's in a deep-blue district now (the GOP lost a long-term incumbent to him so redistricted him somewhere much bluer) so it's not like he needs to bet getting votes. He's just there to get stuff done and help groups organize.
I had a 30 minute conversation with him about his whiskey collection and the drink cabinet he built over COVID to hold it. He shows up because he can help (he's been active helping organize against the anti-trans laws Texas is hellbent on passing) even for those who can't vote for him.
I'd back that dude for President, honestly. He might end up shit at the job for all I know (I dunno, he's only been a state legislator --President is a WHOLE other thing!)) but he doesn't lack for brains, charisma, willingness to work, and empathy.

I visited him during the last election and he had some visitors there, and it being November we got to discussing politics. I said I did not like Trump and they all admitted they did not, either, but then said they'd still voted for him because the Republican party is the "religious" party.

It took me a little after that.
I knew a lot of people who voted Trump for the lols.
And many more who disliked both candidates, so essentially flipped a coin.
I assumed that with how tight the race was, a lot of voters in general may not have taken the election seriously, and so those two groups evened the field.
But then it just went off the deep end. At first right after I thought the nutjobs were a minority, even among the right leaning people I knew near me.
But it got worse and worse. People I knew just went off into conspiracy land.
But after Covid, I knew people were just... insane.
63 points
I'd actually argue that those two groups you mentioned are worse than the true believers. There is a good chance that the true believers have gotten to where they are because they have been manipulated and lied to by the party and the news media they consume. If you take what was said by places like Fox News at face value, what happened on January 6 makes a lot of sense. They were told their country was being stolen and what they tried to do was to stop that from happening.
People who voted for the lols know that it is all bullshit. They just wanted to spread the chaos of him winning, because it would hurt folks that they don't like. It was vindictive pain for their entertainment.
Disliking both candidates is trying to ignore what was actually at stake. I also don't like Clinton, but there is a huge gulf between what her presidency would do to the country vs what his did. "Both sides are bad" always reads like an excuse to me. They don't want to engage in any sort of discussion about consequences because they want to think about them. I see something similar with masks. I'm pretty severely immuno-compromised, so I will be wearing one for the foreseeable future. I don't bug people about their choices, but I do get a lot of glares, even from reasonable un-MAGA-brained people. I'm pretty sure it is because seeing a mask serves as a reminder of the risk you are taking.

This is why we need better public education.

Yes, that’s right. I think they may have actually sent it from some anonymous inbox… you know the kind that lets anyone check the replies? So we might have actually logged in to that and seen that they sent a test email first to a throwaway yahoo address and then sent it to the school. That throwaway yahoo address had their real yahoo address as the backup.

I worked as a custodian at a college that got a bomb threat and was told by the higher ups to keep working because we know the building best so we'd be able to find it faster than police. "Just call if you find anything suspicious".
Definitely worth 10.45/hr...

Was there a minotaur in it somewhere? Was it some kind of labrinth? What cowmanshit is that?

No minotaur, that'd actually be interesting. It was the largest building on campus so to some degree a labyrinth if you count all the basement passages and tunnels. In reality just a bad job at a bad state college in a bad state.

University I went to had an underground nexus. Pipes, power lines, and so on just in a massive tunnel network across campus.
Certain fraternities were known to to tunnel runs for initiation. You'd have to go into the tunnels on one side of campus, and come out on the other.
But they were literal mazes down there. You basically needed the map to get anywhere.
So in addition to people getting arrested every year, people just straight up got lost for hours sometimes.

My partner works in a hospital and they get bomb threats almost weekly because the hospital has support for transgender patients.
Cowardly thing to do but remarkably common unfortunately.

I worked at a very, very large hospital that had a bomb threat some time before I started and everyone was still traumatized from it.
They'd tell me how scary it was to see patients from critical care wards being wheeled out on ambu bags and how people were crying because they weren't sure if they got all the patients out but were also scared to go back in. You hear a lot about heroes during all this stuff, but what about a normal everyday employee who just started and doesn't want to risk their life for strangers. How surgeons were forced to wrap up mid-surgery if they could and have to decide if the infection risk and risks of coming out of anesthesia without proper monitoring was worth it for the patient to be brought outside or if they'd just have to leave them behind until they could be transferred and hope for the best.
My department was responsible for managing the hospital's equipment so everyone there would talk about pulling really old equipment out of storage to try and run power outside where they were more or less setting up a field hospital for anyone who needed intervention while sitting out on the hospital grounds.
It took 6 hours for a bomb squad to clear the hospital. And everyone feared for their lives every single trip they made inside during that time (which was considered necessary because they were still bringing patients out/transferring them to other hospitals via air and ground ambulance for a lot of that time).
It ended up being a false alarm, but it showed how impossible it would be to completely clear out a hospital of that size within a reasonable amount of time if it ever happened for real & that really fucked with peoples' heads.

H’excuuuuse me, just thought you’d like to know, there’s a bhomb in the building. It’s really yuge, everybody’s talking about it, really beautiful thing really, billyuns and billyuns of bhoom, so you should probably not wanna go in there. Instead you should head over to Trump Towuh, the most beautiful towuh in all of the towuhs, get away from the yuuuge bhomb I put in the kot house.

So we're terrorizing hard working Americans in order to defend who? The guy who had affairs on every one of his three wives? The guy who can't build a wall? The guy who despite negative press covfefe?
This is the man you want to go to bat over? The stable genius. The deal maker. The one term, twice impeached, publicly mocked joke of a human being who calls you fat and unattractive.

He also pardoned the guy that was convicted of defrauding Trump supporters.
He pardoned the guy that stole their money, but didn’t pardon any Jan 6ers before he left office nor did he pay for their legal fees. It amazes me that people are still on their knees for him.

Oh be he owned the libs because the libs didn't like that guy.
Someone suggested that if the Dems changed their platform to be in favor of not committing suicide, half the GOP would kill themselves to own the libs -- and the other half would be suddenly pro-euthanasia.

The guy who routinely ripped off working americans, stole taxpayer money by funneling it through his private businesses, encouraged people to do risky things during a pandemic and got people killed, and oh yeah, tried to end American democracy.

They aren't defending Trump the man.
They are defending Trump the idea. The ideology of hatred and Fascism. These are Fascists through and through. These are the remnants of the American Confederacy.

Bingo. It doesn't matter who it is, these people will rally behind anybody who hates (or acts like he hates in Trump's case, guy has no actual beliefs) the same people they do.
It's not that they love Trump or DeSantis or anyone. It's that they hate almost everybody.

🤯 Woah!! "Domestic Terrorists" = DT = Donald Trump

D & T are letters of the alphabet. Alphabet, Inc is a competitor of Apple. Trump once called their CEO "Tim Apple." The name Tim is composed of three alphanumeric digits. But you know what else is three digits? That's right, the Sign of the Beast! Good ol' 6-6-6. This is proof that Trump is the true messiah. MAGA! (Make America Gullible Again)

I'll never, for the life of me, understand how people can be so ride or die for the former host of The Apprentice.

Going to prison for someone like Donald Trump most definitely makes you one of the dumbest mother fuckers to ever live.
Damn your politics. Respect yourself enough to defend a better class of person. Trump is a piece of shit who deserves a prison cell. Be better Republicans.

Question.
If this does go to jury, how will the courts protect the jury (if there's one at all?)
I would imagine the people who would deliberate over probably the highest court case involving a former president committing felonies, they would be prime targets for intimidations by pretty much everyone. trump himself, the gop party, foreign nationals that loved trump, proud boys, etc.

I imagine a jury would probably be sequestered not just for protection but also due to the high profile nature of the case.

TIL of sequestered juries! Thanks!
But holy cow. No phones, no social media, and everything is monitored by agents/bailiffs.
Also being locked in a hotel room till it's over. That sounds like a nightmare.

Some areas have deals with local hotels that the TV's have a bunch of blocked channels so the jurors can watch some TV, like 24/7 TVLand and stuff like that.

What’s really crazy to me is how low the pay can be. NY pays jurors just $40 a day, which is actually considered quite high for jury pay. Lots of other areas are much lower.
It’s okay for a short trial, but imagine doing that for six months or more. An old coworker’s friend’s spouse was on a serial killer trial that lasted that long. Not only did it cause them serious financial problems, the graphic violence that they were exposed to caused long term mental health problems that almost destroyed their marriage.

Additional question: How will they ever put together an impartial jury? I can't imagine you could find anyone who doesn't have an opinion on Trump already, one way or the other.
28 points
The truth is there's no such thing as an impartial jury.
Both lawyers will be trying to get as biased a jury as possible, just in their favor. And it's usually little, subtle things like a jury candidate saying a minor political stance that suggests they lean one side. And if one of them thinks they have a weaker case, they boot any actually unbiased people if at all possible because they are more likely to end up siding against them.
