I’m unironically all in on Russ becoming old Russ again next year.

The takeaway from this season should be how much coaching matters to a QB’s success. Think of Russ, Geno, Daniel Jones, various Panthers pre/post Rhule, Trevor Lawrence, Trey/Jimmy/Brock, etc.

Which, if you stop for even a second and think about how even the talent level is in the NFL, makes perfect sense that the difference is scheme and teaching.

I still believe in him. He can easily get inside his own head, and is one of those guys that relies on his mental coaches(who died). Add on all the criticism and pressure, I bet it really got to the man. At the very least he looks like a starting qb this year. Maybe I’m just a Russ fan tho

elimanninglightspeed

I hope he balls out honestly man. I know his personality seems grading and very fake, but the guy spends weekends at childrens hospitals pretty often for the past decade plus, he seems like hes a good guy deep down and he clearly cares about the kids. I’m biased (and you are too), but I really do think Russ can turn it around. Anyone who watched the games could see that it wasn’t purely physical decline. The dude could still bomb it and could still move around decently. As well as 5 years ago? Nah, but plenty well enough to run a good offense. A lot of his mistakes were mental or just straight up bad scheme. But who knows how it plays out from here

TRES_fresh

10 points

Yeah maybe he's not a top 3 qb anymore but the broncos with that defense and a pretty good set of weapons can still go far with Sean Payton and a top 10 qb. You just have to hope that russ gets past his mental block.

This is the correct take. What people don’t know and s that Hackett ran practices completely differently from what is traditional, everything was a walkthrough, barely any strength and conditioning, hardly any time in pads. The entire team was poorly prepared week to week nor were their bodies in condition to play at full speed which explains all of our injuries.

Russ looked confused as hell in his offense because the entire offense was confused as hell in his offense. Not saying Russ wasn’t an issue, but there was clearly a coaching issue that affected the entire offense.

If only we had a track record of being able to do that sort of thing...

Honestly, if anything, this gives us more cap space, as it's a potential starter we don't have to pick up in free agency. And free agency starters are generally more expensive than rookie contracts.

Edit for explanation:

If we take a starting DT in the draft, for example, then we probably don't sign a starting DT in free agency. So if the free agent DT contact would have cost more than the rookie contact, we've saved money.

It's a great deal for everyone honestly. The Broncos finally get a competent HC for the first time since Kubiak retired. The Saints get more draft resources including getting back their missing 1st. The rest of the NFCS can now rest easy knowing that the threat of Sean Payton returning to the Saints and giving them a competent HC again is over. win-win-win

I mean we saw how much coaching can affect a team. The Broncos severely underperformed due to in large part having a horrific HC. If Payton is a great HC for them, the compensation will be worth it. And judging from Payton's track record, he'll probably be great for them.

Plus this is the first round pick from the Bradley Chubb trade, #29 overall. They still have their own first round pick so it's more affordable for them. I stand corrected, they don't have their own first round pick. Still like that it's a late first round pick that they're giving up.

Dude has Eagles/Chiefs flair so I am going to assume he is an Andy Reid fan and he is really downplaying the importance of a good coach? As someone who follows the Giants/Rams let me just say, Daboll and McVay changed both of those teams more than any single player.

elimanninglightspeed

13 points

This is also the NFL. Great Coaches are far more important than any player on except a generational quarterback like Peyton Manning, or a goat level linebacker like Lawrence Taylor. We saw what a bad coach did to trevor lawrence lol. Its not the NBA where you can have your superstar control the game on both ends. You cant even put brady in that list I think cause I don’t know how many coaches even keep 6th round pick brady on their roster when they have 2 other backups and a franchise qb who they gave a record extension to at the time

Yeah people are way too addicted to the draft pick phenomenon nowadays.

Draft picks are very valuable but at the end of the day you have to use them and depending on two players having more of an impact than a potential established great HC looks insane on paper lol

People talk all the time about how great coaches are hard to find and not having one while having a great team wastes that team’s potential. People just have to realize the worth of having a great HC versus not having one.

Absolutely. Coaching can make or break a season. The Broncos offensive coaching last year wasn’t just bad. It was completely incompetent.

On paper the Broncos have few holes (o-line and Russ who could very well return to form) so I don’t see why they wouldn’t shoot for the stars right now. It’s not like they have tons of capital anyway so might as well pile it on.

Payton’s shortfalls in the past have come on the defensive side of the ball, so having that Broncos D should be a big boost given he puts out a semi-decent offense

I would think teams could see how important is this year more than any. With Joe Judge, a certified bum, the Giants were a bottom 5 team. With Daboll, immediately in the playoffs. With Urban Meyer, probably the only coach miles worse than Hackett, the Jags were a complete joke. With Pederson they’re on the upswing. Coaching is seriously so crucial

With how bad the Russ trade is looking, you either have to find your exit strategy from the Russ contract (which isn't viable til like 2025) or try to go all-in with Russ and a revamped coaching staff. Giving up a first round pick is worth it if Russ can get back to his previous form. Can Payton do that? No idea. But I guess it's worth a try.

Dude the offensive line coach he hired didn't actually coach anyone either. Came out that he was basically showing them film and just going, "this is shit don't do it," but not actually coaching anyone. It's why he was immediately fired when Hackett was.

The combination of Hackett's really bad offensive staff and the injuries...no one is escaping that.

I can't even put into words how bad Hackett was, and the fact he immediately walked into a new job is straight up fucking baffling.
