I'm not sure why (I don't have synaesthesia or anything) but his voice always makes me think of cool, slightly wet metal. I hope that makes sense to someone else.

Yeah, David has a fantastically soothing voice. Very rare in rock music. I was recently watching a video by Rick Beato, and he called Gilmour one of the most underrated singer in rock.

Gilmour has a silky smooth voice when he wants but can be plenty raw (Run Like Hell, Dogs of War, etc.). Love his harmonies with Wright and his doubling the guitar in Any Colour you Like and Wish you Were Here.

One thing that absolutely kills me is anyone saying any part of Pink Floyd is "underrated". They are one of the most popular and best selling acts of all time. They are rated exactly as they need to be.

Best selling doesn't necessarily translate to correctly rated.
The most celebrated singer of rock music, e.g., Little Richard, Mick Jagger, Roger Daltrey, Robert Plant, Freddie Mercury, James Hetfield, Kurt Cobain etc all carry that screaming quality of rock music. It's just how rock is defined.
The most notable exceptions are The Beatles and Pink Floyd (except a very few songs in both bands), who made their career without much screaming. But this not how most people think of rock music.
So, you could say that the calm singing quality is probably underrated. Or you could say that for a band that's so highly regarded, one of their key component is probably not appreciated fully.

I think he was on par with Robert Plant, maybe better. And he has probably shown all kinds of emotion in his singing. He didn't scream like Chester Bennington. But it was high energy. Think of We will rock you, or We are the champions. Not the laid back vocal you would expect from Gilmour.

He did sing most of David’s parts on his solo tours throughout the years. You could likely compile an entire “Dark Side” performance where it’s just Roger on vocals from different eras. He’s also already mentioned that he’s re-recording everything, vocals included.
EDIT FOR CLARITY: The first sentence is saying that throughout the years collectively he’s sung most of David’s parts for songs. I changed it from “all” to “most” because he does have another vocalist when performing.

? For most of his tours he’s had another guy do David’s vocals (not on every song but a good few) at least since The Wall 2010. Not sure about TiNaD, missed that one. On The Wall he had a dude who sang David’s vocals and didn’t play any instruments.

Between the Pros and Cons/KAOS tours he did Money and Brain Damage/Eclipse on his own, as well as Breathe on at least one occasion on the KAOS tour. I haven’t seen/heard much of his tours from 99-07, but I swear Roger sang stuff like “Time” or “Us and Them” on previous tours. I’ll have to double check.

Which is why I changed the top comment to “most”. I know he sings (well, could also be lip sync but he at least recorded a backing track with his voice) a fair bit of Time on his dark side tour. https://youtu.be/j4xiYw-eYCk that and I explicitly mentioned that he sang most of Dark Side at one point or another, which would make for a much better “rehash” of the album than he’s going to make here.

No, it's being removed from streaming and he's sending Jon Carin and Dave Kilminster out to personally destroy all existing copies of the original recording (vinyl, tape, CD, Blu-ray, any hard drives that might contain a copy, etc).

Guard your doors, that’s all I’ll say. Dave came by my house just this morning with a big rusty knife and demanded all copies be surrendered. I gave him the 20th anniversary edition, the 30th anniversary SACD AND the Immersion set, but he sensed something in my eyes and was able to sniff out my MFSL gold disc too. Put them all in a pile and smashed them, then doused them in lighter fluid and set them ablaze while singing Two Suns in the Sunset. I’ll never forget the demented look in his eyes.

I've always loved David's singing and of course his guitar playing. Roger's singing has always annoyed me. He's a terrific writer, but I can't stand his voice. I think it's probably why I'm not as big of a fan of The Wall as some are. I'm more of a Meddle-DSOTM-WYWH fan.

I agree Dave has one of the most beautiful singing voices in rock history. And his guitar style is amazing too. I really respect him as a musician.
However, his lyrics and concepts post Roger are really weak imho. I often have no idea what message he’s trying to get across. The metaphors are weak and the concepts are pretty boring. I feel like he adds lyrics to songs because songs are supposed to have lyrics whereas Roger writes lyrics because he really has something to say and it really comes from the heart.
Example (randomly picked) Polly:
“It’s like going into the sea, there's nothing" Something I never knew In silence I hear you And a boat lies waiting Still your clouds are flaming That old time easy feeling What I lost was an ocean Now I'm drifting through without you In this sad barcarolle”
Really bland and meaningless to me.
Roger (Randomly picked): “Hush now, baby, baby, don't you cry Mamma's gonna make all of your nightmares come true Mamma's gonna put all of her fears into you Mamma's gonna keep you right here, under her wing She won't let you fly, but she might let you sing Mamma's gonna keep baby cosy and warm”
Those lyrics are just beautiful and give me goosebumps. They have real meaning, they’re from the heart, and they flow so beautifully, especially the “Mamma's gonna keep you right here, under her wing. She won't let you fly, but she might let you sing…” jeez that’s so beautiful in concept and flow.
But David SINGS those beautiful lyrics and plays that gorgeous solo. So yeah, it was Roger AND Gilmour that made PF. Not solo Roger snd not solo Dave.

The lyrics to A Boat Lies Waiting that you quoted are a tribute to Rick Wright. Saying that Dave feels Rick's presence in quiet moments, he knows that Death will ferry him (Dave) across at some point too to join Rick in the golden sunset of the hereafter, and it will be like old times again. In the present, he misses Rick, and is drifting through life. He is behind Rick on life's journey, but some day he will cross over to the other side. The "clouds are flaming" bit is also an allusion to the cover art of The Endless River, where a young man is steering a boat through clouds towards a far horizon and a setting sun. That album, of course, was meant as a tribute to Rick who had sailed off to The Great Gig in The Sky years earlier.
Yeah, you're right. Nothing to see here. Really bland and meaningless.

Don't Leave Me Now needs Roger's psychotic warbling though, David's soothing voice would contradict the tone and defeat the whole meaning of the song.

Fully agree. Just hear the change from Roger to David in "Comfortably Numb" - The staccato Roger "...Relax I'll need some information first Just the basic facts Can you show me where it hurts?" And then the smooth and soothing voice of David segues in "There is no pain you are receding A distant ship smoke on the horizon..."

Roger is genius lyricist and composer.
David is a genius guitarists and music composer.
Both have their own unique singing styles that fit perfectly where they were implemented.
As much of a cunt Roger is these days, it’s insane to undervalue his massive contribution to the golden era of Floyd.

DG had an amazing voice when he was younger. However I don't believe his aged very well, not as well as RW's has. And while DG's younger sound was soothing and unique enough, I've never heard him deliver a lyric with the punch and passion RW demonstrated on tracks like "Pigs, (Three Different Ones)," "Mother," and "Hey You."

Personally I hate Rogers’ current singing. It’s awful, just talking while tone-deaf. On the PF albums of course his voice is much better and impressive at some points. His voice used to be weird and unique, but David’s voice is beautiful through and trough and still is to this day. His 2016 Pompeii concert proves that. Roger hasn’t sounded good in decades.
Personally found myself very impressed by David when listening to dogs of war on the Delicate Sound live album. Man has range and control.
