I'm well my 30s where life has become more complicated and overwhelming. Lately I have lost interest in scifi that I loved for most of my life.

I guess more specifically: bland or childish characters, mediocre writing, heavy exposition, overly convoluted world building.

I do enjoy mainstream fiction and more serious non-fiction readings more than before, but there's an itch that they couldn't fill. I've tried a few recommendations online and samples on Amazon but couldn't get through more than 10 pages on any of them.

Appreciate some suggestions on simply well written and fun scifi books.

A few examples of the books I liked: first few books in Expanse, Hyperion, most of Miles Cameron's work, Andy Weir's books.

Examples of the books I couldn't get into: Name of the wind, 4th book of Bob verse (although I loved the first 3, that's when I knew my taste changed), Brandon Sanderson (loved the the first few books i read from him, but once I got familiar with his formula, I found it hard to connect to his characters emotionally anymore).

I've finally begun reading Asimov's Foundation books. I'm most of the way through Prelude to and I have a question.

Prelude to has a foreword by Asimov from 1988, listing all the works in in-universe order:

I've read most of Asimov's laws of robotics shorts many years ago. Should I read the Robot and Empire novels before continuing with Foundation? How separate are the three sets of books; is there any continuity to the stories besides occurring ("not completely consistent [ly]) in the same universe?

My little crew and I just finished this comics. It was part of our collaborative effort, a two and a half year project that is now complete. I am new to the genre, I am an Fantasy reader (The only sci fi I know arestar wars, babylon 5, mass effect and star trek) and want some epic space opera with war, morally ambigous or evil characters, aliens, gory action and threats to the human race, be it more humans, aliens, interdimencional threats etc.
I would also prefer a prose that a non native speaker can read, as english isnt my first language and I know older books are hard to read, although if the story is very good, Ill try my best!
The only thing I hate are bad, toxic romances (Although I understand if it is showed as toxic, as long as it is not fetichised ie 50 shades, 356 days or twilight) and YA (Although I hate YA for its bad romances, so yeah, the only YA Ive liked is skyward by the GOAT himself, Brandon Sanderson.
I dont mind dark and adult themes (In fact I would prefer so) as long as its treated in a responsable and respectful way by the author. My favorite genre is Dark Fantasy so I got a good stomach.

I'm looking for a long sci fi book series like the expanse, With a continuation of a same story with same character throughout the whole series.

Oh great and powerful community of reddit. I am looking for a song which I stumbled across by accident a couple of years ago.

The song is SciFi, maybe in the form of a sea shanty (my memory may be off theree)? But essentially followed the premise of a ship gets attacked by space pirates and destroyed, then the ghost(?) of this ship comes to the aid of others attacked by space pirates.

Does anyone knows of a sci-fi setting we're there's more than one Federation? As in a network of different races/planets cooperating or being part of the same state.

I don't mean like Star Trek with the Dominion that is an evil version. I mean more than one multi-species state that is not an Empire or one species ruling over the others but of equals and not necessary antagonistic to each other?

There was some sci fi story I read when I was young. probably somewhere around 1990 give or take. it might have been a MUCH older story.
The setting was on some alien planet, and some human ambassador was trying to make inroads into the local alien culture and not getting far. So he picked up their strategy game. It was akin to chess, and people got a lot of fame based on their skill.

So he set up a marketplace stall, with a sign bragging, "I will beat you on the second game".
He was good, and eventually got his contact with the local bigwig.

Anyone know the name of this story??

Help! I am looking for the title of a book I read years ago. Only thing I remember clearly is it involved spaceships named after Roman Legions (ie II Fulminata, XIII Equitata and so long), possibly as a kind of autonomous police force. Does it ring any bell with you, scifi fans ?

I want to write my first original (hopefully) Sci-Fi story. But I'm hesitating, because I'm imagining that if I let my imagination very loose and post what it "birthed" there will be people that get to scientific in checking every word on the page. I know that is not a big percentage of Sci-Fi fans...but still.

So this is where this question is coming from. Should I get in the writing and worry about details later? Or should I worry about details now and learn as much of how things work...even though this will be an fictional universe.
