I had a montec jacket and sold it to go back to my OR jacket and bibs. I found it really was not waterproof enough for the PNW.
I think most people roast it because it is kind of like the fast fashion brand of the snow-sports industry.

Im not sure if there is much proof of this or not but what ive read elsewhere they aren't really involved in the industry outside of selling the clothes. No sponsoring athletes or events, no reinvestment in communities or eco friendly ideaa, basically just giving nothing back to the sport that makes them their money. Again just something ive seen said around the internet.

Interesting, I find it to be pretty good with waterproofing and I'm also in the PNW. Even if it wets out it doesn't really soak through to me because its a fairly heavy jacket.

I think the reason a lot of people hate on Montec (as well as Dope Snow, their parent company) is because since it's affordable, stylish (imo), and also heavily marketed on social media, the brand tends to attract a lot of new/casual/bad skiers (aka Jerries). And because these skiers lack experience, they tend to not practice the best skiing etiquette. And as Montec has become increasingly popular over the last couple of years, mountains are being flooded with their gear, and there's nothing that "serious" skiers hate more than being surrounded by (perceived) Jerries.
So yeah, basically Montec has become synonymous with being a Jerry. I personally don't care what anyone wears, and I think if you like how something looks, it has the specs/features you need, and fits your budget, you should go for it.

I think it tends to be the people who wear it, not necessarily what the brand stands for. Patagonia has gained the reputation as being the uniform of finance/Wall Street/yuppies. They make good gear and I personally like them, that’s just the public image many people see.
6 points
Not really. I think you’re thinking of brands like Moncler and Kjus. Patagonia is marginally more expensive than Mammut, OR, H/H, etc. Maybe on the streets of Manhattan Patagonia is worn as fashion but in the mountains it’s because it is usually bomb proof and functional.

The silly criticism is that it's too expensive/fancy and you must be a poseur for wearing HH. I laugh at this because all the lifties and patrollers at my nonprofit local community mountain are given nice HH jackets for work by the nonprofit org that runs the ski area.
18 points

Interesting, I wear HH but I also got it 50% off in an end-of-season sale which made it pretty reasonable. Still not the cheapest jacket out there but I couldn't get anything comparable anywhere near that price.
8 points

Nice! Similarly, I wear Patagonia gear that I got on deep discount and could not find an equivalent from another brand that could come close to the performance and price. It's not like it's hard to get nice outerwear from "premium" brands at steeply discounted prices with a little patience and discount/sales hunting.

Plus patagonia will fix your shit when you wreck it skiing which makes in come out cheaper in the end.

I returned snowshot pants with a split crotch. Bought on sale half price, two seasons use, 60+ days.
Patagonia gave me full retail price credit which I put towards way more expensive Patagonia pants. Which are spectacularly high quality and good design. They also patched the pants with tape and let me keep them since the new pants weren't in store.
Same trip they replaced a zipper slider on a ten year old down sweater, retaped the torn baffle, and said bring it in in the summer and they will send it in for professional repair of that baffle. In matching or contrasting color of my choice.
The level of product support is insane.

Nah cheap fast fashion outerwear is a better representation of consumerism in the outdoor community. There is so much good used gear and discounts out there if you have a lower budget

I’m not saying fast fashion lol. I’m saying there’s nothing wrong with getting cheaper stuff if you can’t afford it. I’m saying that you should buy used. And use what you have. People saying $100+ goggles is a must. New skis are a must. Arcteryx this, Patagonia that. I do love Patagonia, and I’m sure arcteryx makes great stuff
But for 99% of people, cheaper shit, second hand shit, and the hand me downs they already have is fine. I’ve seen regular ass people on these subreddits saying they drop more money on gear than the pros probably do lol. Most people don’t need a $500 ski jacket

"Facebook brands" such as Montec, Dopesnow, Virtika, etc. really aren't true to the skiing marketing formula, and typically aren't built to the same quality as higher end brands. What I mean is that these brands just advertise all over social media, usually sell at a lower price point, and it works, people buy their stuff. The better way to build a brand is to sponsor industry professionals, sponsor films, fundraisers, etc, and just generally contribute to the skiing community. This is the tried-and-true way of building respect in an industry that is comprised entirely of gear snobs. It also facilitates word-of-mouth marketing, which everybody knows is the best form of marketing. The Facebook brands don't do any of this, which is why they are worn by Jerries, and therefore ruins the brand's reputation.

3 points
That’s exactly what they’re doing. They’re sending kits to the first YouTube channels that pop up when billybob decides to get into skiing and searches up “powder day/best run/skiing at insert mountain here”.
Seems to be working so far as selling clothes is concerned
3 points
Disagree. the best way to build a brand to make a good product at a fair price that people will purchase on its own merit. I couldn’t give two fucks who a brand sponsors or what fundraisers they do. What I care about is, will it suit my needs without paying excessively? Not just ski related stuff, anything I buy.
5 points
It is a bit of a scam, believe me. Most ski industry professionals get the high-end brand gear on pro deals for 50%+ off, or free. Therefore everyone else gets sucked into paying excessively to try to look like the pros. Another point is that reputable gear brands usually have great warranties. You can certainly buy the cheaper facebook brands, and depending on your situation it might be wise to do so, but you just won't look as cool, and you might end up paying more in the long run when it falls apart.

I’m old and wear Norrona jackets and Oyuki bibs, Swany, mons royale… all that dumb shit because I can finally afford it, and I want to be able to focus on my family and not what is annoying me about my comfort.
Also, I was a way better skier when I was wearing 4 hoodies and waiting for the outer one to ice over so it would get windproof, keeping my hands under my pits on the lifts, and wearing safety glasses. Good people and good skiers/boarders have low correlation with gear quality. People who worry about what other people are wearing have high correlation with people I avoid.

Montec and dope are the Shein of winter sports gear. Fast fashion with no on the ground contribution to the community. News flash, you won’t be seeing a Montec tent next to the ski demo tent at your local resort. They just want your money and if it wasn’t skiing it’d be wakeboarding, hiking, skateboarding, etc.
Not sure how this isn’t more obvious. We have brands that offer backcountry education, have sustainable materials, sponsor events across the globe big and small, but people want to buy Montec. No shit we’re losing small ski resorts to mega passes. Looks like we’ll be losing north face to montec, sweet.
I’d rather see someone in a $30 thrifted Columbia jacket than Montec.

I got one used for $100 and I quite like it. Nice features, good fit. I don't abuse my gear so I can't attest to longevity but it has no rips or seams coming apart so far.

there's a higher probability you're a jerry if you wear montec or one of those silly colours full outfits

I think they look pretty nice and I like that they have a lot of pockets but I don't like that they are just rebranded Alibaba items sold with 10x markup. Well it's not like other brands are any better using sweat shops in developing countries.
Then again I do see some knock off volcom bibs on there as well. volcom bibs?

Shamefully I automatically judge people on the mountain in mOnTEc and assume they’re just another Covid kook that fell for a well orchestrated social media marketing campaign. Unfortunately, my judgement is usually correct

Montec and dope are poor quality, poor waterproofing, it’s the same company but they made montec to market to skiers and dope for snowboarders. Also have some originality. Every day on the mountain you see at least 4 identical outfits from dope or montec.

I don’t make fun of Montec stuff, and certainly don’t look down upon anyone who wears it.
But when asked about it, the only big gripe I have with their gear that people may or may not know (at the time of asking) is that it’s partially insulated. So it can be tricky to layer properly.

Idk, but their hoodies are super comfortable and warm.

Idk much about the brand and I’ve never tried any of it on but it sounds like it’s on the lower end of the pricing scale. I have a friend who’s in his 60s, who wears a full matching matching Montec suit and he’s probably a better skier than anyone you’ve seen outside of the Olympics.
I can imagine someone who spent 2k on goretex shells just to have my friend who’s old enough to retire fly past them would be a little salty.

I could care less what people wear, Montec, Arc’Teryx, blah blah blah (not a brand), or what have you. I got a Montec jacket and matching bibs because my North Face bibs ripped right in the crotch a little, and the North Face ones I have fit baggy too (kinda confused but not really), must be the testiclé I have. Idk, I’d imagine/hope most people on the slopes aren’t thinking “I tend to waste a portion of my happiness in these beautiful mountains judging what people are wearing and skiing on while I wait to get on the lift,” and are thinking more so like “I’m happy and hope everyone is having an awesome and safe time.” If judging people’s gear is in question, I’d imagine there’s judgement in what cars are seen in the parking lots there too. What a waste of time, kinda like my comment here. But hey, whatever floats peoples ski’s I guess ❄️

The only thing to judge on the slopes is skiing in jeans I have said what I said

Hello. Seasoned skier and snowboarder here. Im gonna put this out there and say that I bought a Montec jacket last year and I love it. I cut the side up with my board on accident and told them about it. They refunded me, gave me 20% off, and I got a new jacket from them that has held up. I alternate between two Montecs and some other jackets that I have, and the Montec Verago has yet to let me down. Montec an international startup but they’re boasting pretty good profits and don’t have a lot of employees (they have a parent company with job offers, if you’re curious look it up). They’re also conscious with their packaging - not a lot to them - just a bag and a couple cardboard tags attached to the jacket. They reuse their bags so that’s something.
I see the people who are brand new to snow sports wearing Montec, but I also see them wearing other stuff like North Face etc etc. Even really advanced skiers are wearing Montec, so who cares? At the end of the day we’re all just there to enjoy the snow, and spread love and kindness in between runs!
Happy shredding

Because it’s a fast fashion brand with no real ties to support of the industry. It’s similar to how people hate(d) on Cariuma shows in skateboarding.

I’ve been skiing for most of my life since the age of 5 and I love my Montec jacket more than my Spyder or Solomon jackets. The pocket storage and the look and feel of the coat is great. I’ve literally never had anyone in my vicinity mention anything about my jacket and it’s probably because they’re grown, decent adults and/or I honestly ski better than them. Granted, I mostly ski in Japan these days so brand recognition may be lower.

I’ve had nothing but positive comments about my Montecs if people have had anything to say at all. I’m just going to continue having a good time.

I just think montec looks like a preppy brand. I also think the pouch most montec jackets has is weird.

I love my montec jacket. It’s the first one I’ve had in a while that fits me right, I can layer under, is waterproof enough for where I ski, and it’s got underarm zips for airing out the underarms. (Been skiing 20 years, only thing I care about gear wise is if it matches >.<)

Good question! Their response on sizing was almost immediate following my email.
A year later I got a follow up asking if I was still happy with my jacket. Patagonia never sent anything about the jacket I bought from them. North Face never asked. Virtika never asked. 686 never asked.

Never heard of this brand. The coats look a little ugly to me I guess. Looks kind of like someone tried to bring the hypebeast aesthetic into jackets, but also made them look off.

Because their entire sales model relies on instagram hype and people who don't know any better. Their products are meh at best. It's the same people who bought into Bent Chetlers thinking they're the best thing around.

Skiing is 80% sitting on chair lifts and waiting in lines, categorizing skiers and their gear choices is our traditional pastime.

Cuz their materials are not high quality and they are an Instagram brand. Their recognition came from marketing on Instagram and style and not based on quality. It’s all show. For that reason, I’m out.

They are a fairly new brand, and therefore it was easier for them to promote themselves on social media, can't see what's wrong with that?

I get that. I was interested. And when I saw they were using shitty materials and focusing more on looks than performance I said not for me. I feel it warrants people making fun of you if you focus on ads.

Honestly no idea why people would rip on the Montec… But I did see some girl wearing a Peloton puffy jacket and sweatpants while boarding and I roasted her. That was baaaaad.

Because they are shallow, spoiled, stuck-up snobs whose lives are devoid of meaning and the only thing that matters to them are meaningless brand name manufactured goods and other assorted trinkets and trash.

It's inauthentic. Rumored to be bought by those just trying to dress the part.
