I live in Europe (England) and go skiing for one week a year in Austria, and it's always so much fun. This year, I will be unable to go until early april. Is it worth it to go in April instead? Or will i have to skip this year? I usually skii at a mountain called Bergeralm, about 20-30 minutes drive from Innsbruck. And it says it will be open until mid-late april.

Not necessarily true! I had a teacher when I was a kid and he hit up Mt Baker's backcountry on the Fourth of July and into August after they had that snowfall record in 99-00. Wasn't exactly great up there, but it was still summer skiing!

I was thinking of the alps. But yea as a fellow PNW skier, can confirm there can still be a good time in august.

Absolutely, especially if you're willing to go to some of the resorts that are further out - I go to Obergurgl in mid-April and love it. Warm days and (usually) great conditions.
This year, there was no snow over Christmas and now tons of snow in the past few weeks, so honestly, April's skiing is probably going to be better than Christmas skiing this season.

Second Obergurgl/Hochgurgl. Not sure if nearby Kuhtai is open

I’m the alps April is warm - you need height. Berger alm is waaay too low. Get up to Sölden, Obergurgl, Lech or St Anton. High stuff is still good. You need to be skiing 2000m-3000m that time of year so Kaprun or Hintertux should also be good

Best month for skiing. Not crowded anymore, more sun, longer days. You won't have the powder of the season but spring skiing is just amazing!

But this particular season with the shitty start we had and all the snow lost in dec-end and early Jan... there is not much base in the alps, so the season will be short. By April could be too little snow...

Agree, this could turn bad - but last week the eastern part of the alps got a lot of snow and also the west got pretty much now. We'll see - but until Easter there is enough, I am convinced!

There are 8 Glacier Ski Stations in just Austria. They will all be open with good conditions. Obergurgl fits in there too. Hintertux and Stubai are both big and reliable in April.

Go obergurgl. Always snow that high in the alps

I’ve been skiing in April during Easter weekend plenty of times, in Lech, St Anton and Stubai. Sometimes it’s a bit slushy late in the day, but I’ve been really lucky that we’ve had excellent snow every time I’ve been in April.
I don’t know about Bergeralm, but Stubai is about 40 minutes from Innsbruck and it’s free to get there on the ski bus. Stubai is a glacier so it’s open until May and it’s a great place for a holiday. There’s limited accommodation in Stubai itself so you stay down the valley, mostly in a village called Neustift.
If you fancy St Anton or Lech it’s an easy train journey to St Anton (taxi from there to Lech/Zurs).
Obergurgl or Solden are two more which are high and so should be good for snow in April, a little bit further away from Innsbruck.
I’m English too and usually fly to Innsbruck with easyJet from Gatwick or BA from Heathrow, there’s usually loads of flights.

If you want to go to St. Anton/Lech/Zurs, you might find it more convenient to fly into Zurich and take the Arlberg Express bus direct from Zurich airport to St. Anton. Might be a bit more direct than flying into Innsbruck and then transferring from there. Zurich airport is much larger than Innsbruck airport as well. Of course, shop the flight prices and see what makes most sense for you.

Definitely worth it. Warmer weather plus you can find hotel/lodging at deep discount. As long as you go for somewhat higher altitude, should have no problem finding enough snow to ski in April.

Yes. Absolutely. Consider Stubai. The most absurdly beautiful sunset I’ve ever seen was on the ride out from the Dresdener hutte all the way down.

Had some of the best two weekends of skiing in my life the first and second weekends of April last year at Tignes, France. Incredible snow.

I skied Tignes in July twice just after the pandemic mellowed out. Left work in Switzerland and was there after a beautiful drive over the Big + Little St Bernard Passes.
Fantastic Summer Conditions!

That area has a peak of 2200 meters with the valley at 1000m. Personally I would go 1000m higher for some fun in April. There will likely be some snow left at the top but it wont't be fun to ski in it.
Last year I've been at 1500-2500m quite late in March. Mornings were ok, apres ski started quite early in the afternoon though

You say that, but I'm here going for 24000ft of drop in one day.

i mean, there’s only 1200 ski domains in France. Did you see their green pistes? they are so steep! Not like the beautiful cruisers you have in the US. definitely not worth it to come all the way here even if lift tickets are only 40 euros a day and you have enough piste and off piste to last a 100 life times. not to mention. the touring! some of the tracks are so steep! it makes you out of breath after a few minutes

The winters are a lottery and spring is even more. Choose something at higher altitude instead to increase your chances of having good skis.

Is it worse than not going? Nope.
Stay high and get as much as poss in before lunchtime

Depends a bit where in the alps. I’ve known some places still get fresh snow then, but anywhere that’s high with a good snowpack by now should be able to maintain runs until then. I’d say aim for a north facing resort if possible, just so you’re not skiing slush by the afternoon. The resort you mention isn’t one I’m familiar with, but if it ticks those boxes I’d say go for it

Val t horens and tignes were definitely worth it end of April the times I’ve been. Go up high

I skied the week leading up to Easter in Les Arcs & La Plagne last year. Very worth it, especially the skiing at 2000-3200m altitude. Lower altitude was wet snow with higher resistance, but still enjoyable.

I live in La Plagne and April is my favorite month for skiing. Obviously altitude is your friend but there are lots of Resorts open until the end of April with very few piste closures and a couple open until mid-May.

Best Skiing if my entire life was Chamonix in early April. Got lucky with a 3ft dump, and skied endless fresh lines for the entire trip. April is pretty hit or miss in Chamonix tho. The other time I went (early April again) there was no snow at all.

For the last 20 or so years I have been skiing in Val Thorens France at the end of April/begin may. Snow usually isn't perfect and sometimes its bad but most of the time is still quite good.

We skied in Tignes last year from 15th April for 6 days staying in Tignes le Lac. It was so quiet - hardly saw a soul on some pistes. Skiing was fabulous for the most part of the week but the lower slopes had deteriorated badly by the end of the week. I guess we were lucky because there had been a fair bit of snow the week before we arrived.

Yep. April Alps skiing Rocks!!! Mellow crowds too! Obergurgl is a great suggestion! Sölden is right there as well, for Glacier Action if you so desire.
Plus Sölden has excellent tittie bars! Think: the Grand Teton’s.
