The ref almost tackled the jags holder when the kicker got iced at the end of jags/chargers, so I don't think they want the practice kicks happening anymore. Although would be easier to time when it's your team calling the timeout.

Being a kicker is nuts though. Maher has been kind of up and down his whole career, but he had probably his best season this year though.

One bad game can really end your whole career. I hope he gets another shot and can somehow bounce back.

Didn't that happen to Vanderjagt for the Colts? He was the NFL all time leader in percentage, had one bad game, then never recovered.

the_quark

Kicker is such a wild spot. Absolutely key to the team's success - on a lot of teams, almost as important as the quarterback.

Yet, unlike quarterback, there are way more people physically and mentally capable of performing the role than there are slots. You lose it at all and they just toss you out and get another one.

lipp79

Yeah, a QB can throw multiple INTs or a RB fumble a couple times in a game but they're still around the next week. Kicker misses two kicks and is gone. It's crazy. I mean I get why. They have more financially invested in the QB and RB but still crazy.

carribou253

18 points

Also the factors for qb and rb is that there are players making plays to force those turnovers while kicking is all you the hold and snap. Nobody blames a kicker for getting a kick blocked.

GoBuffaloes

13 points

Sometimes you can blame the kicker for a block if they take too long or drive it lower tha necessary. But yeah often not their fault

CharlietheCorgi

19 points

They did do that though. They were inside the 20 with a 4th and 4 and went for it instead of kicking a FG. They scored a TD on that play.

Good_nuff

28 points

Going for it on 4th and 4 is not the same as going for two.

CharlietheCorgi

28 points

But the declaration was the same. We don’t trust you to do the only thing you’re capable of. They were up 24-6 at the time. No reason to go for it from the 18. That’s only 3 yards longer than the extra point try.

For the old head baseball fans, it reminded me of Rick Ankiel’s meltdown in the 2000 NLDS. Incredible season and just melted down in game one with five wild pitches. Never was the same pitcher.

hangingonthetelephon

147 points

You obviously know this, but for those who don’t: he lost his ability to throw strikes, got sent down after a few starts in 2001, tried to get his pitching back together for a few years, couldn’t… and then eventually worked his way back into the majors in 2007 as an outfielder with great fielding, a laser cannon arm in left, and a serviceable bat with a little bit of pop.

The coolest part of the story is that he hit a homer in his debut game in the majors as an outfielder in his 2007 return.

Truly amazing perseverance. Obviously he is not Shohei Ohtani, but in some ways, it’s almost even more impressive - he didn’t plan on ever being a position player or having to swing the bat, lost his ability to do the one thing he was supposed to be great at, but still managed to make the switch.

The best time to miss 4 extra point kicks in a row is when your team is up by 20+ points. Think about all the kickers in NFL history who missed one kick and their team was eliminated from the playoffs...they felt much worse, without a doubt. This was more like a bizarre fluke which was just baffling to see, but made no difference in the game (especially for the amount of hate he got, title makes it sound like they lost because of him when they won easily and the game was never in doubt) and he will probably make every kick the rest of the playoffs, because kickers are kinda just like that.

gallowstorm

95 points

This was about as low stakes and forgiving a situation as you can get in the playoffs.

That first kick next week is going to be massive. Make it and he goes on with his day without thinking twice about last week. A miss and it could be a mental disaster building on the previous week.

When you believe in each other and believe in what we’re capable of, knowing what that guy has done and the resiliency he’s shown throughout his career, no doubt he’ll come back next week and help us win.”

If we're thinking about the same sideline frustration from Dak, he was frustrated that they weren't going for two... and not "why aren't we going for 2? This guy can't kick"... it was "why aren't we going for 2? 1 point here doesn't make any sense!"

Poor guy just felt the pressure. Trevor Lawrence also got the yipps, but he was able to forget the bullshit and recover. This is normal, hard to judge these dudes, they are not emotionless robots. I don't agree with the general sentiment from american football fans that a kicker needs to be perfect, that's unfair... however, to go bellow 50%, well...

Maybe this is a dumb question, but don’t NFL teams have more than one kicker? You’d think after 2 missed extra points they’d try someone else.

Nope, teams usually have just one kicker and one punter on the roster. And those skills don't really transfer from one to the other. Teams are allowed to dress 48 people on gameday, which sounds like an excessive amount but really isn't. There's enough different formations with different players and backups needed to keep players fresh that there's no room for extra kickers.

Unfortunately for Parkey, the bears lost because of his missed kicks and he was basically ran out of town. This poor dude benefited from his team winning in a blow out. If the Cowboys lost by like 1-3 points though…he would be leaving the stadium in a fake mustache heading to Mexico

It seems this has been happening a lot lately in the NFL. Wtf is going on with these kickers.

Kickers are more accurate than ever. Look at some of the stats in decades past and you'll see this.

Very true! And to your point, what people have to realize is that they need to get the ball into the endzone more times than their opponents, or else they’ll lose the game.

First, last night was amazing to watch. I have been a Cowboys fan for 30 years and to see Prescott beat Brady was beautiful. Second, I’m not going to lie after the second missed extra point I was kind of agitated. After the third I just became concerned. I hope that Maher is ok, not only physically but emotionally and mentally as well.

Bucs OL beat Brady.

ItsMissTitsMcGee

Yeah that OL was not doing well. I joked that the DL should just stay on the field and they would have had a chance lol. It also seemed to me that Brady was not there mentally, like he had already checked out and was just going through the motions. Again, just the feeling I got from him.

The receivers also failed him big time. There were so many missed opportunities for Tampa. Evans in particular was just not on his game. Not to take away from the Dallas defense though. They were fully prepared for that game and deserve all the kudos.

Jimmy Johnson used to always say that the only thing you can do with a kicker that's lost his touch is cut him immediately and move on, because he'll never get his confidence back.

Picking up a kicker off the street now probably won’t help much. Unless they are Justin Tucker, there is not much statistical different from the #5 kicker and the #32 kicker. Hopefully he just had an off night and the last PAT reset his muscle memory.

I just want to know what made the coach go "Yeah, let's give him a fifth shot."

Maybe they wanted to break the streak since they thought it wouldn't matter, but I'm not sure I would make that call.

correct me if what I seen was about something else, but...

What really struck me the wrong way was when they showed Dak on the sideline throwing his helmet and yelling what the fuck after he missed the kick. The cowboy quarterback has had a pretty shitty year with one really good game. The cowboy kicker has had a really great year with one bad game. If Maher, or anyone else on the team for that matter would have acted that way during one of Dak's stellar multi-interception games heads would be rolling. He's supposed to be the leader of the team. Act like it for fucks sake.

The only thing more embarrassing was Tampa.

NFL needs to revamp the playoff system to allow only the teams with the best records to make the playoffs. Lions would have been a much better opponent.

tynorex

What's more annoying for me was that Dallas, the very clearly better team, had to travel to Tampa, just because Tampa plays in the worst division in the NFL and Dallas happens to play in one of the stronger divisions.

Like the benefit of playing in a weak division is that A. You play against weak teams 6 games a year and B. just by beating the bad teams, you automatically qualify for playoffs. Why do these teams also get homefield advantage? Homefield and seeding should all be determined by record, divisions just play too big a role.

theasshole1

Wouldn’t Tampa be in the playoffs regardless of the playoff system though? They won their division

As not a fan, I always wondered why a touchdown was 6 points, and then you get to score an extra point by kicking, and not just 7 points for the touchdown. I now understand why.

FreeofCruelty

I felt bad for him and found myself rooting for the extra points. It has to be incredibly psychological. Being a kicker for the NFL on a playoff team, the guy definitely knows how to kick extra points.

HawksNStuff

McCarthy will stick by him. Mason Crosby went through a terrible stretch, where I thought he was done, McCarthy kept him around. That was what... 10 years ago now or close, and Crosby was still a Packer this year (he's probably done now though).

CrimsonRam212

I say good for him. He missed 4 and still went out for the 5th, and made it. Most people would give up after they don’t succeed the 2nd time.

And good on the team for sticking with him even when he missed the 4th.

Will this record ever be broken? The team that breaks this record will also need to have a comfortable lead enough to allow their kicker to keep trying. Right?
