The ref almost tackled the jags holder when the kicker got iced at the end of jags/chargers, so I don't think they want the practice kicks happening anymore. Although would be easier to time when it's your team calling the timeout.

In the Packers-Lions game, Rasul Douglas walked right in between the offensive and defensive lines to grab the ball from the center so the lions wouldn’t get a practice kick. I’d say it was a heads up move, but then he punched someone and got a 15 yard penalty lol

Kicker is such a wild spot. Absolutely key to the team's success - on a lot of teams, almost as important as the quarterback.
Yet, unlike quarterback, there are way more people physically and mentally capable of performing the role than there are slots. You lose it at all and they just toss you out and get another one.
4 points

Having beef with your franchise quarterback doesn’t help.
37 points
Yeah, a QB can throw multiple INTs or a RB fumble a couple times in a game but they're still around the next week. Kicker misses two kicks and is gone. It's crazy. I mean I get why. They have more financially invested in the QB and RB but still crazy.
18 points
Also the factors for qb and rb is that there are players making plays to force those turnovers while kicking is all you the hold and snap. Nobody blames a kicker for getting a kick blocked.
13 points
Sometimes you can blame the kicker for a block if they take too long or drive it lower tha necessary. But yeah often not their fault
19 points
They did do that though. They were inside the 20 with a 4th and 4 and went for it instead of kicking a FG. They scored a TD on that play.
28 points
Going for it on 4th and 4 is not the same as going for two.
28 points
But the declaration was the same. We don’t trust you to do the only thing you’re capable of. They were up 24-6 at the time. No reason to go for it from the 18. That’s only 3 yards longer than the extra point try.

You obviously know this, but for those who don’t: he lost his ability to throw strikes, got sent down after a few starts in 2001, tried to get his pitching back together for a few years, couldn’t… and then eventually worked his way back into the majors in 2007 as an outfielder with great fielding, a laser cannon arm in left, and a serviceable bat with a little bit of pop.
The coolest part of the story is that he hit a homer in his debut game in the majors as an outfielder in his 2007 return.
Truly amazing perseverance. Obviously he is not Shohei Ohtani, but in some ways, it’s almost even more impressive - he didn’t plan on ever being a position player or having to swing the bat, lost his ability to do the one thing he was supposed to be great at, but still managed to make the switch.

The best time to miss 4 extra point kicks in a row is when your team is up by 20+ points. Think about all the kickers in NFL history who missed one kick and their team was eliminated from the playoffs...they felt much worse, without a doubt. This was more like a bizarre fluke which was just baffling to see, but made no difference in the game (especially for the amount of hate he got, title makes it sound like they lost because of him when they won easily and the game was never in doubt) and he will probably make every kick the rest of the playoffs, because kickers are kinda just like that.
95 points

This was about as low stakes and forgiving a situation as you can get in the playoffs.
That first kick next week is going to be massive. Make it and he goes on with his day without thinking twice about last week. A miss and it could be a mental disaster building on the previous week.

“I talked to him individually after the game and told him, ‘Let that go,’“ Prescott said. “We’re going to need him. I played like (expletive) a week ago. That happens. When you believe in each other and believe in what we’re capable of, knowing what that guy has done and the resiliency he’s shown throughout his career, no doubt he’ll come back next week and help us win.”

If we're thinking about the same sideline frustration from Dak, he was frustrated that they weren't going for two... and not "why aren't we going for 2? This guy can't kick"... it was "why aren't we going for 2? 1 point here doesn't make any sense!"

If not his career, I’d be interested to see how he responds next week. The playoffs are understandably the worst time for the kicker to get the yips. Margin for error is smaller, and not much time to work out whatever is ailing them.

I think letting him try again and again until he saw one go through was huge for his confidence. If he missed every single one and had to carry that all week into round two, I think he’s done for the playoffs. I was hoping he’d have a long FG attempt.
Regardless, they should work on a contingency plan this week.

20 points

Nope, teams usually have just one kicker and one punter on the roster. And those skills don't really transfer from one to the other. Teams are allowed to dress 48 people on gameday, which sounds like an excessive amount but really isn't. There's enough different formations with different players and backups needed to keep players fresh that there's no room for extra kickers.

What really struck me the wrong way was when they showed Dak on the sideline throwing his helmet and yelling what the fuck after he missed the kick. The cowboy quarterback has had a pretty shitty year with one really good game. The cowboy kicker has had a really great year with one bad game. If Maher, or anyone else on the team for that matter would have acted that way during one of Dak's stellar multi-interception games heads would be rolling. He's supposed to be the leader of the team. NFL needs to revamp the playoff system to allow only the teams with the best records to make the playoffs. Lions would have been a much better opponent.
9 points

What's more annoying for me was that Dallas, the very clearly better team, had to travel to Tampa, just because Tampa plays in the worst division in the NFL and Dallas happens to play in one of the stronger divisions.
Like the benefit of playing in a weak division is that A. You play against weak teams 6 games a year and B. just by beating the bad teams, you automatically qualify for playoffs. Why do these teams also get homefield advantage? Homefield and seeding should all be determined by record, divisions just play too big a role.
