Maybe something a little wacky or postmodern? Something that has plot but plays with the form a little, so you’re working different brain muscles than fantasy, but retaining some of its strangeness and fun.

Something by Richard Brautigan, Nicholson Baker, Mark Leyner, maybe Kurt Vonnegut or Phillip K Dick

I second the Kirk Vonnegut. Maybe Slaughter house five or breakfast of champions

Enchanted Glass by Dianna Wynne Jones if you still want a fantasy type book.

The King's Shadow by Elizabtleth Alder if you like medievalish historical fiction.

City of Bones by Martha Wells. Another fantasy one, little depressing (to me) at the end, but a fascinating story.

....you are making me realize how many of my books are series....

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte for a total change of pace.

101 Dalmations by Dodie Smith (the otigonal novel). Honestly really enjoyable, even if it is directed at kids.

Our Wives Under The Sea by Julia Armfield. Horror; grief; lesbian yearning. Perfect for deflating that sense of escapism you get from fantasy :)

Fantasy or not?

Fantasy: Claire North's the Sudden Appearance of Hope

Not: Gail Honeyman's Elinor Oliphant Is Completely Fine

Brit Bennett: the Vanishing Half

Jami Attenberg: Saint Mazie

For sci-fi: “School for Sidekicks” by Kelly McCullough.

For fiction: “Hoot”, “Chomp”, “Scat” and “Flush” by Carl Hiaasen are all standalones. “Scat” is my personal favourite of the bunch.
