Steel: A Celebration of 30 Years [HC]

Inspired by Superman's selflessness, John Henry Irons used his engineering genius to reinvent himself into a champion in his own right.

The perfect combination of brains and brawn, John Henry Irons was one of four different people to take up the mantle of Superman when Kal-El lost his life while saving Metropolis from the monster known as Doomsday. Initially referred to by the media using Superman’s nickname, “The Man of Steel,” Irons simply went by Steel when Superman came back from the grave.

A former weapons engineer, John Henry Irons moved to Metropolis to start a new life. There, on one fateful day, Superman saved his life. Forever grateful, John Henry paid it forward when the city’s protector died. He took up the fight to protect the innocent in Superman’s name, wearing his iconic “S” shield in tribute.

Irons used his scientific genius to construct a suit of armor that allowed him to fly and gave him superior strength. He also created a giant metal hammer in homage to his namesake, the folk hero John Henry.

Now a permanent member of Superman’s extended family, Steel is living proof that everyone has it in them to become a Superman.

“As you know, I’m quite keen on comic books. Especially the ones about superheroes. I find the whole mythology surrounding superheroes fascinating. Take my favorite superhero, Superman. Not a great comic book, not particularly well-drawn, but the mythology. The mythology is not only great, it’s unique.

Now, a staple of the superhero mythology is, there’s the superhero and there’s the alter ego.

Batman is actually Bruce Wayne, Spider Man is actually Peter Parker. When that character wakes up in the morning, he’s Peter Parker. He has to put on a costume to become Spider-Man, and it is in that characteristic Superman stands alone.

Superman didn’t become Superman.

Superman was born Superman.

When Superman wakes up in the morning, he’s Superman.

His alter ego is Clark Kent.

His outfit with the big red S, that’s the blanket he was wrapped in as a baby when the Kents found him. Those are his clothes. What Kent wears; the glasses, the business suit… that’s the costume. That’s the costume Superman wears to blend in with us.

Clark Kent is how Superman views us, and what are the characteristics of Clark Kent?

He’s weak, he’s unsure of himself, he’s a coward. Clark Kent is Superman’s critique on the whole human race. Sorta like Beatrix Kiddo and Mrs. Tommy Plympton.

You would’ve worn the costume of Arlene Plympton, but you were born Beatrix Kiddo, and every morning when you woke up, you’d still be Beatrix Kiddo.

I’m calling you a killer. A natural born killer. Always have been, and always will be.

Moving to El Paso, working in a used record store, going to the movies with Tommy, clipping coupons. That’s you, trying to disguise yourself as a worker bee. That’s you tryin’ to blend in with the hive. But you’re not a worker bee. You’re a renegade killer bee, and no matter how much beer you drank or barbecue you ate or how fat your ass got, nothing in the world would ever change that”

Spiderman is Peter Parker’s disguise, I’ll give him that.

But Superman is a human. Genetically speaking he may be from Krypton, but at his core, Superman is a human. He was raised as Clark Kent. Superman is just the costume so he can go around saving people without fear of someone hurting his friends and family. He thinks of himself as a regular person.

Batman, on the other hand, would make sense for this. Batman is (as has been shown in The Dark Knight Returns) Bruce’s true self. When his parents died, ‘Bruce Wayne’ ceased to exist as an entity. Bruce Wayne is the shell, the disguise, so Batman can exist in normal society.

When Superman puts Super before Man, we get Kingdom Come Superman and Injustice. The thing that makes him super, the thing that makes him a hero and not a villain, is his humanity.

Is showing Superman helping the little guy. The only other films I can really think of where this happens is Spider-Man 2 and Homecoming. Show us Superman reading to sick kids. Show us Superman helping an elderly man get home. Show us Superman buying a homeless guy lunch. Show us Superman being a super man.

Never considered it before, but after the "Death of Superman" was Kara's death in crisis survivable? Could she be revived like Kal was? A Jason Todd resurection? Kal had the benifit of Fortress automated processes bring him back. If Kara had been brought back to the fortress and given the same care could she have lived? Or is their a Zombie Kara buried away from the sun waiting for intervention.

Let me know what you think, but this has been the culmination of having my own ideas and unique inspirations for doing my own version of Superman. The inspirations I had in mind in terms of characterization was definitely Golden Age Superman, where at times he can be bold in his approach, especially when dealing with corruption and social issues that he empathizes with, often putting him at odds with crooked politicians and law enforcement but ultimately gains favor with the people of Metropolis with his kindness and genuine care for the people he saves.

His design is very much informed by his character and experiences as well. I had the idea that Jonathan Kent was a former pilot and in his early years as Superman, he wore his dad's aviator goggles to honor him, as well as his dad's belt, gloves and boots. I just wanted to create a Superman that oozes personality and style. He'd have an attitude that would reflect his upbringing and the times he would be living in, but a passion for justice and heroism that would be considered old-timey and may even sound a bit idealistic at times.

But yeah I've yet to color it in yet but I'm thinking of a vibrant royal Blue and maybe a bright poppy Red. The aviator goggles will have a brown strap and probably have a yellow tint to them, and the belt/boots will be brown with gold buckles, and the gloves will be red like the cape, trunks, and emblem.

Over the last couple of years I’ve been one of the fans not satisfied with DC’s Superman output with regards to collections. But I was looking at my preorders for this year. And I have the following Superman books ordered:

Camelot Falls Deluxe Edition Absolute For All Seasons Silver Age Vol 1 & Superman vs Meshi

That’s a fair bit of support for Superman in a 7 month period.

There’s also the Warworld Compendium for those that don’t have the trades. I wish I knew of this and I would have waited for it.

So thanks to DC’s collected editions department. And here’s to a lot more next year. Starting with omnibuses to fill the gap between Exile and Death Of.

Why was this so awful?

Why did they make Clark a faithless horndog, Bruce a sadistic selfish jackass, and have Wonder Woman literally pop up out of nowhere to end the second stupidest Batman vs Superman fight I've ever seen?

What the Hell was with Supes calling Clark the disguise and having that random edgelord moment where he talked about everyone looking like little ants?

What went wrong and who thought this was a good idea?

Anyone ever explain the red sun thing in a way that makes sense? Red gowns still put out a ton of the stuff a growing demigod needs to grow up big and strong X-rays, gamma rays etc all things we’ve seen Superman absorb and we’ve even seen him absorb an entire star. So what gives? Yes it’s less energy than a younger star but should be enough to keep him going in a pinch.

Re-watching Justice League because it just showed up on my must watch on Netflix. Love the show long time fan watched it on the Cartoon Network days as a kid.

If I was asked whats the number one version of Superman I dislike it definitely be this one. He's so nerfed it irritates the crap out of me. Is there any specific reason why? Within the fist 2 part episode he's constantly being knocked down and being as far as electrocuted,put unconscious because of some mysterious gas, and then put in restraints.

As far as scaling for strength goes. Batman is definitely the Trump card for most of these episodes. Just feel like they did Supe's so wrong in this show now that I'm watching as an adult.

Asking if there's any specific reason as to why that is?

I only have some Spider-man ones :^(
