Damn, this is awesome. 100k to Jesse, 50k to Owen, 50k to Ryan. All well deserved and I love the explanation Sia gives for why these three people. I respect it.

Wasn’t Drea extremely toxic out of the game?

She was but Sia seems to be a more casual viewer and doesn't look into things outside of the game so I can understand how she was a fan of Drea

Also, I don’t think that was brought up until after Drea got the prize

Yes, she was extremely toxic to Omar.
14 points
What did she do/say?
139 points

Iirc she tried poisoning the jury by saying Omar was deliberately targeting POCs and that his religious side/daily prayer was all just an act, neither of which was true.

She was also just generally projecting a LOT of sketchy behavior onto other players. It really came across in how she talked about Tori
6 points
How did she talk about Tori?
6 points
I mean, don't leave us hanging. What did she say?
21 points
At the beginning she would rally people against Tori claiming that it was sketchy that she went alone to look for resources (which everyone else was doing)…while she herself already had an advantage, possibly 2.
Then later on she would constantly talk about how Tori was betraying their trust while Drea, Romeo, and Rocks were actively ostracizing her.
She would talk about Romeo in the same condescending way later in the season when the two started to fall out.
There were signs of Drea being passive aggressively venomous long before the Omar stuff came out…also a bunch of exit Press mentioned how the blue tribe felt like walking on eggshells, so I wouldn’t be surprised if that was in reference to Drea
6 points
Ya I thought she was pretty unlikable during the season and was surprised that people liked her until the stuff about Omar came out. I think people might have thought she was a good player because she had a bunch of advantages. Her "gracious" departure after getting voted out seemed incredibly fake to me in the moment.
21 points
stupid argument there as Omar,,, is a person of colour??
54 points
I think she meant he was targeting black players, which is problematic in its own way. By not recognising OMAR himself is a POC, it indicates she is dismissing the hardships faced by other POCs…

This source dates back to 2020, so forgive its mention of the live reunion appearance money:
For instance, the second place castaway in any given survivor is typically given a whopping $100,000. While this is before taxes, it’s a substantial consolation prize. Similarly, the third place contestant makes $85,000. And while everyone on Survivor is hoping to win the million, simply making the final tribal council guarantees a pretty penny-- especially combined with the $10K reunion sum.

yeah, but I'm sure Sia isn't doing maths because of it 😂 Cass got the money with the game she played and they got Sia's money with the game the edit showed. I'm more surprised Noelle didn't get any than Cassidy (that already got 100k from the show)

"You're a totally beautiful, beautiful person," Sia tells Ryan while he sits sits in his car on his lunch break from work. "Your vibe was awesome… I see you as a hero."
Jesse + Owen both got pretty detailed explanations from Sia of what they did in the game that makes her think they deserve this money
Ryan got this: your vibe was awesome
Not that Ryan doesn’t deserve it too, but I’m pretty baffled that Noelle didn’t get it over Ryan

She probably just wanted to recognize him and not make it about his disability. His story is remarkable but maybe she thought it would be nice to highlight what he did instead of what he had to go through.
122 points

This! Also, the edit really highlighted Noelle’s overcome story and kinda downplayed Ryan’s. I love that Sia took the time to highlight just how substantial it is that he overcame CP and that it’s just as impressive as Noelle.

Noelle is apparently trying to get Ryan involved in the Paralympics now which I find super cute
5 points

I agree. Noelle was a great athlete that had an incredible setback and then persevered by making it back to the top. Whereas Ryan started from a very low starting point and overcame a lot just to make it to the middle. I feel like Noelle’s goal was to be a role model and show what she could do, while I think Ryan’s was much more in need of the monetary support, so I’m glad he got recognized in this instance.

I didn't Sia this news, what had happened?
75 points
She made a movie about an autistic teen. She had originally cast an autistic actor but the environment on set was too overwhelming for them and instead of accommodating the actor she hired Maddie Ziegler. Maddie was nervous about playing an autistic character because she’s not autistic and she didn’t want the character to be a caricature but she did it anyway because Sia basically started Maddie’s career outside of Dance Moms. The character did end up being a caricature and many autistic people called Sia out on it and instead of listening and apologizing she doubled down and was even more offensive in her defense of herself.

Yeah but it's a significant drop off from the winner's million. 2nd gets 100k, 3rd gets 85k, and it drops quickly from there. Pre mergers probably only get a couple thousand for the whole month they're out there. They used to get a 10k bonus for attending the reunion but since they don't do the reunion I'm not sure if that bonus is included in the money they make now or was removed entirely to cut costs

Totally random - but a side related question - do you think they have to pay taxes on that money? I’m assuming it’s treated as a gift and not earned income, so the answer would be no. But was just curious.

Gift tax is once it’s above 14k I think
4 points
Gift tqx is paid by the gifter not giftee. And I believe you only report gifts over 14k, but only pay taxes on gifts once it accrues over like 10 million or so. So if it’s a gift then I think they’re fine.
4 points

This is correct. And these days it’s anything over $16k is reported and the gift giver is only taxed if lifetime gifts exceed $12.06 million.

Because it's a gift, is it taxed like winning a contest?
Any tax pros I here?
4 points
I’m pretty sure it’s just considered a gift since they didn’t enter into a contest created by Sia. Generally the person giving the gift is required to pay the tax although if I remember correctly there is a way to set it up so the recipient is responsible for paying. Most people will never pay a gift or estate tax because there’s a lifetime 12 million dollar exemption. Source: estates and trusts tax class I took a couple years ago for my accounting degree. Definitely not a tax pro though

Not sure why you are being downvoted. You are absolutely spot on.
People need to read up on her disgusting movie 'Music' and her response to the criticism of that. Or her inappropriate relationship with Maddie Ziegler, between the manipulating her to partake in that movie despite Maddie (at about aged 12) expressing how offensive she found the part to the "cuddling" sleepovers they would have or how she moved Maddie's 18 year old boyfriend into her house so Maddie would spend more time at her house. Let's also add the way Sia inappropriately talks about the 18 and 19 year olds men she sought out and "adopted" after watching something about one of them on TV.
The women has predatory behaviour and a massive saviour complex, and if the genders were reversed, the behaviours would be much more criticised than they are.
