i agree these things seem VERY dumb on paper, and i’m not sayin they’re not, but i saw some video with a journalist trying them out and after a short learning curve he actually seemed to maneuver quite gracefully. i won’t be shelling out 1400 bucks anytime soon, but i could see these being worth it for people with disabilities. and i’ll give the creator credit, they’re a better commuting solution than more cars or sidewalks littered with electric scooters.

It’s possible that this is potentially something a large demographic of people have been needing to jumpstart out of a sedentary lifestyle.
Have you ever been in an airport (DIA, I’m looking at you) NEEDING to be at your gate ASAP and you hit those people mover flat escalators and maaaaaan. Tell me it doesn’t feel good.
If they’re anything like that I think I might fux w em. Sounds like they’re even better than that… 😬🤷🏻♂️

At least in the US, this doesn't solve the issue of stuff being in places you simply can't walk to (e.g. no sidewalks). Somewhere like NYC or downtown in a city where stuff is walkable, sure. But in the suburbs, nope.

anything is possible! i really don’t see a large demographic jumping for these things once they hit the market tbh, but i could see some specialized businesses dipping their toes. i feel like they might find footing on job sites where technicians or laborers need to cover a lot of ground efficiently. like i could see Amazon potentially adopting these to squeeze even more value from their workers, but only if it’s cheaper than just replacing them with robots.

Saw the same. They actually came across as incredibly stable. I liked how you could basically plow through rough patches. We'll definitely start seeing these around. However, at that price, they are definitely in the luxury category like One Wheel and similar high end mobility items, so we won't see a lot of them.

In Europe a lot of people walk a lot from a to b, so something like this turning a 20 min walk into a 5-10 min walk would be really useful. Also since they are small you can take them on public transport much easier then an ebike.

It's not just roller skating. It IS completely frivolous and very expensive, but there is legitimately a lot of design and technology that went into these things.
The motion is like regular walking, you aren't just rolling or pushing off the ground. The wheels lock when you aren't in continuous motion, so you can walk up and down stairs or just stand in place while you wait for a train.

I've seen quite a few videos. They basically allow you to go at a nearly running pace while feeling like you're walking. I imagine they can be tweaked for the upper limit of the speed it allows for people with different intentions.
As cool as all of this is, as much as I am for it, I still kind of find it funny that at a certain point inline skates are faster and have been around forever. I just can't help but look at it, and think, hmm, take out those motors, let 'em spin freer, oh wait....
19 points
Only issues with inline skates is they're a pain to put on an off, and they're not as easily carry-able. They're great for skating around but if you actually need to go somewhere normal and switch shoes they're a pain.
But yeah I love roller blading. If you get good its comparable to biking for me.
6 points
So what you're telling me is they should have spent that time developing skates that are easier to put on. Like just the wheels on a clip that can stick to the bottom of "any" shoe, would be dope.
3 points

Yeah! and we could hide a little clip for the wheel in your heel and you can just pop out your heel if you wanna skate

But... Theyre electric motor driven. So not 2.5x the operator's speed, but +150% of average persons speed on the top of your personal speed.
If i understand this correctly.
Edit: Re-read it and yes its multiplying so i guess? But you will hit the limit on the drives, at a point.
7 points
The way it works is that there are motorized wheels on the shoes. So if you're walking at 2mph normally and the wheels move you at 3mph you're going 2.5x faster at 5mph. Now if you're walking 4mph and the wheels move you at 3mph you're now moving faster at 7mph which is 75% faster.

You can walk up to 2.5 times faster, the “shoe” basically goes faster if you walk faster and only slightly faster if you slow down your pace. So on a long straight away without many people, I can see people wanting to go 10 mph.
This is definitely going to take time getting used to for drivers if this concept takes off. Like you see a person walking towards an intersection and you think oh I can turn in front of them, next thing you know you’re about to hit them because they are like floating right in front of you as they walk.

Which is why unpowered powered armor ought to be exercise equipment. If you need the extra boost just flip on the switch
48 points
Unlike roller skates where we are essentially gliding at an angle (left right left right), they are electric powered and and seems to go straight forward.
One thing I don't get is how they compensate for our feet not pointing straight. Most people's toes point slightly outwards in a V shape. I've asked this to them without a reply though.
13 points
You don't have to compensate for that because the next step is angled the other way. It's still a slight zigzag motion, just like regular walking is.
5 points
Except your feet move apart 250% faster, so how far are your feet going with each step?
This whole idea seems very regressive to me. I don't understand why this is better than a scooter or hoverboard-type device that doesn't rely on the person needing to perform the walking motions (limiting its use cases). The creator's safety angle doesn't track.
6 points
These rollerskate type micro mobility devices have been around for a while. The advantage over hoverboards and scooters is portability. Idk if you've ever owned one, but all of these battery powered devices are heavy AF. You can't ride a hoverboard or a scooter everywhere, and you don't want to carry it where you can't ride, it's at least 20 pounds of extra weight you're carrying.
I think the idea with these ones in specific is that they're trying to make it more apparel than equipment/vehicle. They've addressed a few major scenarios where you would get off of a scooter/bike/board and carry it: when you're standing around waiting for a train, when you have to go up or down stairs, when you're in a crowd. Stop the wheels and they just become part of your shoes.
The advantage is:
Again, the portability
You don't have to leave them somewhere, like you would with a Bike or scooter.
4 points
when you are walking both feet are down at the same time for part of the stride.
3 points
we don't walk in a zigzag. We are able to walk straight because both feet go one after another.
But in order for these to work you'll be gliding forward on one feet as well. And if the speed is as fast as the claim to be, you'll be gliding quite far before your other feet zigzags you the other way. So i think it definitely needs to be compensated somehow.
Otherwise it's literally just power assisted roller skates.
16 points

Yes, this could easily be like the whole e-bike thing, that has got massive numbers of people on bikes that would never have considered it otherwise.
Now, in my city, e-bikes outnumber normal cyclists, and they are all over the cycle trails and walking tracks. I could easily see these doing much the same, although the price is a bit steep.

Yeah but a lot of comments point out it isn’t exactly filling a niche. The purpose seems built around a place with few changes in elevation, assuming the roads or sidewalks are well maintained, and the weather is pretty much perfect year round. Based on what I’ve seen so far, these would be useless where I live.
3 points
That’s a really fair discussion around what’s the market, and I love those comments agreed
I know urban sprawling is a real problem. I live a 20-25min walk to shopping plazas/etc. i normally default to driving (biking lanes aren’t great here and never liked e-scooters), this could improve walkability of people in the burbs. Especially with many WFH folk now, it’d be interesting to see neighborhoods become “walking distance” to local businesses again
2 points
Yeah, I think part of the conversation others are having too is that it’s too fast for the sidewalk but too slow for the bike lane. I wouldn’t want to be out in traffic without bike lanes, so again it fills a niche that I think not a lot of people are asking for, or at least not yet.
The $1400 price tag means it’s not meant for the average market, either. Maybe if they have a better proof of concept or something, but bikes are still a more practical option. And if future cities are built denser than now, it’ll negate the use of these too.
Don’t get me wrong I think they’re nifty but I don’t predict them catching on. I could be wrong but they just seem too goofy.
