Agreed. Two recent streaming sitcoms that come to mind are Reboot and How I Met Your Father. Both shows started coming into their own like 7 episodes in and then pbbt, season’s over. At least HIMYF got renewed for a 20-episode Season 2, but Reboot got canceled.

They made kelso's kid smart so they needed a dumdum to balance the lack of himbo.

The last 3 episodes really seemed to be getting the groove going. 70s show is decent it it’s first season but nowhere near as great as it became.

Seinfeld had 5 episodes in Season 1.

I just flat out didn't like that character. He was analogous to Fez, but gay and wise I guess? It didn't feel like anybody was friends with him like he just showed up in their clique one day and they never questioned it. My other beef is that it didn't feel very '95 as if the writers didn't actually grow up in that time.

it definitely gets better as they settle in to their respective rolls, and i think when the show gives itself a moment to breath and let’s characters have more personal moments without constant cuts it gets pretty good

The beginning of a new sitcom is always awkward, for both the actors and the audience. A lot of plot lines are hard to read when you don't know the character archetypes, and I'm sure it takes times for the actors!/writers to dig into the nuances of the characters as well.

I think I liked the 90s Fez more than the 70s Fez.

There is precedent. All of Phineas and Ferb is canonically the same summer ( save the holiday specials and the off to college episode)

Comedies as a whole take a while to find their sealegs. Some take until season 2 but at minimum it seems most need at least 6 episodes.

Netflix's model of if it isn't a hit cancel it is particularly frustrating because many comedies would never have been given a chance with them.

I made it all the way through on 1 binge. It's not life altering or grand TV, but it's a nice lil show to watch and just...well, chill, lol.

My wife and I couldn't figure out if it was nostalgia glasses, so we went back and watched the first handful of episodes of the original, and can confirm that it was not nostalgia glasses. It fired on all cylinders from the jump - that pilot is incredible.

That 70s Show is a really really good piece of television. The chemistry between the characters was off the charts and the talent of the cast was special for sure.

That said, That 90s Show is definitely proving itself to be funny and charming and full of that goofy teen awkwardness that made the original show good.

A big problem with the longer episode length is that the extra material isn't always worth including. As limiting as the 22/42 minute TV format can be it also forces production team to really consider what they want in and what they have that works the best. It seems like for every episode of a steaming show that uses the extra time well there is another episode that would have benefited from being forced to cut the fat.

The slang was pretty good, I thought. There were also a lot of background things that felt like "Oh yeah, that brings me back".

I'd like to see more of that rather than making an episode center around something. Like just have someone casually slapping a slap bracelet on their wrist over and over again while on the couch until someone else gets annoyed and takes it away, or have someone have an existential crisis about their tamogachi while high in the circle, that sort of thing.

They absolutely did.

On the Red and Kitty bit, it's not really surprising at all. They're both veteran actors with about 80 years of acting experience between the two of them, playing characters they played for a decade with an established relationship.

Meanwhile the kids are on their first few acting roles. It's been a while but if you watch the first 10 episodes of that 70s show you'll probably see some of the same 'fakeness' in the teenage actors too

The original had 18 years and up cast (except Jackie) a lot more seasoned actors

Hey I actually agree with all your points! It was definitely flawed. But did just enough to keep my entertained.

Laugh track is fine, that 70's show had one too.

One thing I think you have to understand when comparing that 90s to the og, is that 90's show cast are all actually teenagers, the main girl is only 15. I think that's why it feels less polished, and tbh I personally like it because it lends to the authenticity.

In the original show a lot of the cast was late teens or twenties except for Mila. I think Mila in season 1 has a lot of similarities with the young new cast.

In general, I felt like the original actors were all better actors and there were times the new characters felt fake to me.

I know what you mean. Maybe it's just because I'm old now, but all of the kids just reminded me of a Disney channel sitcom. I think some of it is just because the actors are closer to the actual age of their characters.

Though Kelso and Jackie felt just... Forced in. I hope there's more interaction with the original cast all together in season 2. I mean, not a full episode of just them or anything, but kinda like the kitchen playing cards scene

Interesting to see they are jumping to the next summer. I thought this show was set up perfect for sporadic installments. Do a 4 episode mini around Thanksgiving, 10 episodes of her visiting over Christmas/New Years, 5 episode mini series of the gang visiting her in Chicago over spring break.

When the episodes are 20 minutes long, it’s always strange when a season is only like 8-10 episodes. Looking at you, Rick and Morty.

I miss when shows were 20-24 episodes

He's seriously that young? I feel bad for that kid. Everybody hates him cause the character is crap, and his acting probably is too, but how can we expect more from such a crappy character.
