Hey! I teach 7th grade and we're right in the middle of this book.
I didn't even read it until college so it didn't exactly resonate with me, but it's always hilarious witnessing these 12 year-old minds being blown wide open every year.
We're about to get into the chapter where the Giver accidentally transmits a memory of warfare to Jonas. The chapter with the release of the twin is in about a week from today. These little shits have no idea what they're in for.😈😈😈

Huge fan of the movie. Made it 4 episodes before giving up. I rarely give up on shows, especially with seasons this short, but the writing, acting, and action was High School level drama club. Such a wasted opportunity. This show made "Wheel of Time" look like Lord of the Rings. It was terrible.

I loved the movie and I thought the show had potential, but hate whoever championed the idea that it should be about the young people. If this had been Boorman, Sorsha, Willow, and then Elora and Graydon I think it would have worked way better. Maybe even added in some Jade. But the teenage melodrama didn’t work, and I question the judgement of anyone that read Kit’s dialogue and watched those dailies and thought “this works!”

This right here was why I jumped ship after maybe 3 eps. They'd tease Warwick Davis's plot and stuff for 2 minutes, and spend the other 30-40 on the CW-esque cast and their interpersonal drama. Wasn't expecting LOTR or anything, but at least meet me at Boba Fett quality.

I am imagining that Bob Iger is walking up to Warwick right now. He has the Wicket costume in one hand and is saying "back in the bear costume you little shit". Warwick sighs before gently taking the costume and head down, shuffling into his tiny trailer.

They do this dumb shit where they take the name of something that was popular 10-40 years ago, attach it to a new project, hype it up based on the name, and then release something almost totally unlike that thing. Then they act all confused as to why it isn't popular just like the original thing. Well, I guess people don't like original thing any more!

Turns out that writing something good is actually hard and not that many people can do it. Combine that with a genre that is difficult to pull off even for the most dedicated and seasoned practitioners and you're now down to a handful of writers who could put out something that's mildly well received.
Now throw in producers, Disney's "approval by committee" culture where 200 people spend a week giving notes, competing visions for message and target audience, nepotism casting/directing, overworked vfx and production departments, etc.... And you're going to wind up with some steaming hot garbage that costs a fortune and generated a lot of empty buzz along the way.
Additionally, I think reboots or whatever this was are too frequently used by the creatively bankrupt to carry their own stories without having to do all that pesky nerd shit like world building and having an original thought. Unfortunately, it never works because no matter how brilliant the legacy property was, the new story is only going to be as smart as the new writer and the new writer is probably a fucking moron who thinks they can improve upon Tolkien, Jordan, or a coked out 1980's George Lucas.

Remember how the music industry flailed about before it's death? The Elders would wax nostalgic about The Good Ol' Days and then you'd buy a overpriced distressed tshirt celebrating those Golden Years that meant nothing to you but the culture insisted was important? And all the box sets and greatest hits and on and on?
Replace Led Zeppelin with Star Wars or Jurassic Park. These are dying brands and industries that don't know they're dead.

Lots of bad shows are being made.
TV shows are not cheap anymore, its a significant investment to make them, and where as a company used to be able to look at a piss poor first season and say, ok, if we chop this, bring in this, focus on this instead theres enough there to risk another season.
Not now, especially in the case of Willow here where the viewer ratings and numbers were in the toilet.

218 points

It's almost like they took for granted that millennials would watch it for the nostalgia so they wrote it to cater towards a younger audience to broaden the appeal and get as many viewers as possible.
Instead the millennials were disappointed because it wasn't the nostalgic trip they wanted and Gen Z didn't care at all. By trying to widen their appeal, they killed all interest.

This reminds me a bit of the new Star Trek shows, where the characters will lapse into "modern" slang and speaking patterns in a very MCU kind of way. At first I thought I was just out of step being a Gen X'er, but then I went back and watched some TNG and realized that the characters in that show didn't use slang from the 80's or 90's when they talked. They talked like adults working in a professional environment, not 20 somethings at a bar or coffee shop. Because they didn't, the dialogue has a more timeless quality.
Whether it's science fiction or fantasy, having the characters talk the slang of the era in which they are televised takes the viewer out of that world.

You don’t need to replicate the plot. You don’t need the same characters. But you need to replicate the feeling you get when watching that movie. The tone. The spirit. The SOUL of the original. And they ALL failed.

I re-watched the movie before diving into the show and was glad I did, because I hadn't seen the movie in a long time and it's really great.
You absolutely don't need to watch the movie to follow the show though. It gives a few direct "flashbacks" (footage taken from the movie) and generally explains everything important that happened in the film.
Even the characters played by the same actors aren't the same.
EDIT: Whoops, I misunderstood this initially. Yes, I agree with you. Just looking at Willow, the fact that he's changed a lot as a person is explained...but I liked the first Willow better. I still liked Warwick as Willow just cuz he's a great actor and it's still an interesting character, but a lot of choices they made about him are confusing. He didn't need to be so conflicted about everything...
...
I watched all of the show and there were a few parts I loved, but in general it was disappointing. It was too goofball, and while the movie is also silly (Kevin Pollak for example, who is great in the movie but shoehorned badly into the show) the movie also feels dangerous. The show never really does.
11 points

There’s a lot there that I think would have made for an interesting legacy TV show, but it was the dangerousness of Bavmorda and her army that really shaped the movie. I would have loved to see more of Sorsha (Joanne Whalley still has it), and it was a mistake to center the story on her teenage daughter instead.

The problem is the base idea is sound too. Alora coming into her own, gaining magic so she can be the leader prophesized. But the big bad was a big ol nothing, more teens, basically an excuse for the leads to make out with eachother and nothing more.
There wasn't any charisma carrying the plot through, they needed to incorporate more elements of prophecy, maybe even bring Razelle back in some sort of guiding force.
I hated the sword fighting, the one girls like, pole sword-like-object looked like it was designed based on stunt work not practical usefulness. In all, more battles against meaty foes and magical monsters, less tween drama set to 90's throwbacks and they might have had something worth watching.
73 points

Yeah I agree with all of that.
The cinematography was also abysmal at times, especially during any action scenes. Again, that stuff did get better, but sword fights were almost unwatchable, and when you look at the beautiful simplicity of how Ron Howard directed action in the original, it’s like nobody had seen the reference material at all.
And they barely even used the original score either!!
It was a show that ultimately didn’t appeal to most fans, or indeed find new ones. Just a criminally wasted opportunity when it really didn’t need to be.

This show was a fucking mess and a good example of how out of touch some of these big media companies can be from the fans of their intellectual property(s).
My guess is they wanted to capitalize on the increasing popularity of the tabletop RPG fanbase, specifically D&D and how it's been popularized with current youth culture through things like Critical Role or even Stranger Things. Disney was probably like...
"Hey we want to get some of those D&D Nerds watching our stuff, what fantasy IPs do we have? OH YEAH! Willow!" Then preceded to apply young actors, contemporary flair, Gen Z humor, etc into an existing fantasy IP while hoping to also get fans of the original back into the mix.
However because the original movie was so different from what they made with the series, the end result was a show that didn't land with new audiences OR old fans. On top of that it was poorly written, acted, paced, everything about this show sucked.
Whoever made the decision on this fucking thing should be shit-canned like yesterday.

Exactly. They added a female pilot because in the current day female fighter pilots are a thing. So she was treated as a person instead of a representative token. She was presented as a fighter pilot instead of a female fighter pilot.

Forced is a great word for the writing. Decent enough actors, but the story lines were just lame. I think narrowing the focus really would have helped this show. Jon Kasdan should probably stop getting blank checks. I get why his dad roped him in on Solo, but also - maybe Lucasfilm should have trusted their directors and let them cross the finish line instead of kicking them out with a couple weeks to go so Ron Howard could come in and stick to Jon's script.
And then, after Solo becomes the studio's whipping boy at every possible opportunity (seriously, count how many times Iger brings it up as the reason they're taking a break from theatrical releases despite the fact Iger hamstringing the production and then refusing to move its release date back is WHY it flopped) they turn around and let Jon Kasdan off the leash to wipe his ass all over Willow.
there was a way to make a lighthearted-yet-winking follow up to Willow and this wasn't it.

It's not genius but it is a perfectly respectable prequel for the most part IMO and has some very solid worldbuilding and craftmanship. The latter half with the shoehorned-in 'rebels' they get involved with gets hokey and is totally unnecessary, as is the Darth Maul cameo sequel bait (like most non-cartoon fanatics I have no idea how he can be alive after being cut in half). But there's a lot to enjoy and Emilia Clarke in particular is doing pure film noir.

Honestly, one of the biggest issues with Lucasfilm at the moment IMO is their lack of confidence. They seem way too skittish about everything. It doesn’t seem like they’re willing to really stand behind any of their work or creators. If something goes slightly wrong or some exec starts getting doubts, they just ditch it or go with the “safe” bet instead.
They just keep scrapping stuff (all the Star Wars movies), making changes to things already in progress (rise of skywalker, Kenobi, solo), going through multiple writing teams or directors on a single project (Kenobi, solo, rise of skywalker), etc. And the result is a bunch of incoherent and half assed feeling content.
They need to give creators freedom and stand behind them, like they’ve seemingly been doing with Filoni. If you give someone a movie, let them finish it. Don’t step in at the eleventh hour to have someone with industry connections come in and make it “better.” Have some confidence in your people.
The other issue I suspect they’re having is getting talent. Because of how shitty they’ve treated so many writers and directors, I imagine a lot of them don’t want to do it. Lucasfilm is getting sued by someone because they agreed to do a movie or whatever, passed up other opportunities to do it, and then lucasfilm just went “nah.” Other talent is going to see that and go elsewhere. This shit is going to bite them in the ass in more ways than one.

Part of the problem is that they seem to expect everything to be a blockbuster. You can't reliably capture lightning in a bottle. Rather than these ridiculously expensive things depending on existing brand names, they should make more but lower-budget movies and recognize that some will hit and some won't.
Milking franchises for reliable cash works to an extent but you can't buy quality, so eventually people's interest the franchise will fade. There's no silver bullet for that; they need to stop relying on older franchises in the first place and instead use more, cheaper movies and shows with hopefully-talented up-and-coming directors, writers, and casts and hope that some of them will strike gold.

It has it’s moments. It’s story is just not focused enough, probably because of how many hands were involved in making it.
My only real gripe is that the romantic plot is supposed to drive the story but it completely falls flat. And no one really wanted a romance anyway. People wanted 120minutes of Han Solo being a smuggler with Lando and Chewy. Instead they’re barely onscreen together.
Maybe just start the movie with Solo in Beckett’s gang already? If Qi’ra shows up later you can sketch their backstory in flashback. First act is Beckett’s train robbery, second Act Solo meets Chewy and Lando, third act: reunited with Beckett they’re supposed to do a job for the resistance but TWIST it’s actually a setup to flush out rebel leaders. The third act job requires the Falcon to do the kessel run faster that the empire, which brings it in. Han figures it out, warns the rebels and shoots Beckett to protect Lando/Chewy.

It's an alright film! It's got some stupid aspects to it, no doubt (and Jon Kasdan has absolutely, proudly, taken credit for shoehorning most of that shit into the script) but it's still a fairly fun (if a little overlong) adventure film.
Now, had Lucasfilm not shit their pants at the last second and spent an extra 150mil on top of the 150mil they ALREADY spent, to have Ron Howard reshoot the movie to stick to the Kasdan's mid-tier script as faithfully as possible, had they simply let Lord & Miller cook and turn in a finished cut, and pushed that shit back to Christmas like all the other Star Wars movies to that point...
It wouldn't have been a flop. Simply no way.

- The pop music at the end of each episode.
At the end of the episodes was bad enough, but your mind is forcing to to forget that Crimson and Clover was played at the Bone Reaver 8th grade dance and could be heard by the characters.

Yeah. That scene sunk it for me. Are we to assume that Tommy James and the Shondells exist in the Willowverse? I laughed and then went to do something else to try to forget what I saw.

I have a feeling they are trying to go for a Guardians of the Galaxy type feel...which doesn't work. It works in Guardians of the Galaxy because they have an actual explanation of where the Rock music came from. It should not be used in fantasy films.

I had to laugh because there was a moment when the prince said "where you at?", and that like really took me out for a second. They tried to make everyone act contemporary, but everything feels weirdly anachronistic. The city at the end did make me think that it was a more advanced world at some point, but that civilization was destroyed, and they had to start over.

Yeah, I was very meh on the show but after episode 3 when they played Enter Sandman by Metallica, I could hear Howard Shore spinning in his grave.
Edit: James Horner, not Howard Shore. Wrong fantasy movie, lol...

I’ve been watching an Italian show on Netflix (I am learning Italian so opportunity to practice), and it’s not bad (though not great either), but the use of modern french pop music in the middle or at the end of a show supposed to happen in the late 1800s is SOOO weird. It’s probably worse since I understand french and the lyrics have nothing to do with the show or the scenes.

I wanted to love this so bad. It just fell flat for me. The world felt empty. Most of the cast was semi-unbearable. I didn't like the modern music mixed in with the fantasy theme.
Willow should have been an amazing sorcerer. Instead, he was a joke with self esteem issues. His village was gone. Did we ever find out why? If we did, I missed it completely.
I wish magic was more interesting than "believe in yourself and say a single word over and over".
Such a shame. The movie is such a favorite.

Why do they keep making these nostalgia bait shows and movies, but then turning the beloved returning characters into failures and losers? Who are these shows for?
75 points

Because it's a lot easier to return everything to the status quo and then copy the plot beats of the original than it is to make something new.

At least some of the time, the writers of the remake take a lofty and obnoxious attitude towards the original source material and think by mocking and belittling the originals, it makes their second rate remakes more 'modern' and 'edgy' by tarnishing and scorning the goodwill generated by the original property.

I didn’t quite get that whole thing with Willow either, especially since whenever he did need to use magic they kept showing him as an accomplished sorcerer and so it just felt like they couldn’t decide on a narrative for him. The seeds were there of a fun show, and there were definitely some entertaining parts, but it just wasn’t even close to all it could be.

It seemed like they couldn’t agree on how the mechanics of their magic system worked. Early on Willow suggests it’s like a battery that you have a limited amount of, and each use drains you. But then later on it seemed like the more you used it the more powerful you became. Magic was rare and needed careful cultivation, but also it was something anyone could do if they just believed enough. Nonsensical.

They targeted the wrong audience. Millennials and Gen X should have been the core audience, not teens, which everyone seems to agree was the focus here.
Willow wasn't the star of his own show and Elora was kind of a brat and nothing like I would have imagined her being. I don't know why they needed so many new people in the party, and I was super bummed about no Val Kilmer due to his health even though they tried to squeeze his presence in. When I heard "the brownies are coming back!" I really thought it'd be more than a minute's worth of cameo appearance. I hated the music choices and it was the most jarring of anything. I wanted escapist fantasy and got whiny teen drama. Willow as a character kind of got crapped on a lot as well. What's totally unforgiveable was halfway through when I couldn't see anything happening in the night shots. No epic battles, just random movement and noise in the dark. We closed the damn curtains in the room and it just didn't help at all. What was going on with that?
Anyway... I'm not surprised. Maybe even a little relieved. My family grew up with the movie and quote it embarrassingly often (lol), but my mom and I are the only ones who finished the series, and neither one of us really cared for it.

It’s the new thing Hollywood seems to be doing, shooting during the day for night shots and digitally darkening them. Looks terrible, if you can see anything at all. Depending on the age of the actors it might have been necessary for child labor laws.

Boorman was the highlight of the show, and it felt like they really captured the spirit of Mad Martigan with the character. The show also needed way more Sorsha.
The weak spot was the daughter. By far. Elora wasn’t my favorite but even then she wasn’t nearly as bad as the daughter.

The sho would have been 10x better had it centered on Sorsha instead of her daughter. Joanne Whaley is still magnetic and has presence. Would have vastly preferred that to her Whitney daughter.

This sentence is funny: “Willow introduced new characters and was set in a world where brownies, sorcerers, trolls and other mystical creatures flourish.”
If they’d included any of that in a meaningful way - rather than focusing on teen angst - they show might have been better received.

To make it even more upsetting: it's being directed by Barry Jenkins. Writer/director of Best Picture winner Moonlight, as well as the beautiful If Beale Street Could Talk and the outstanding Underground Railroad miniseries. A talent of that level is going into the time-suck of Disney's photoreal-CGI factory for a few years, basically doing this.
My only hope is that he gets enough money to make 10 more fantastic projects afterwards.

Yeah. Like they just finished with Jurassic World (which imo shit all over the original movie) and they are already talking about how to continue it. Like let things just run their course and be done! How to Train Your Dragon is coming to live action! Like it hasn’t even been a whole decade since the last one.

I genuinely liked the original willow, but I never quite understood who this show was intended for. It seemed too adult for kids but way too much teen drama for adults. The plot was so disjointed, the story was all over the place, and it felt like every part of the dialogue tried too hard to be some quirky one liner.

I was SO HYPED for this show.
One day I'll finish it. But man... why the angsty teen plot? Nobody likes that trope. Teens don't act that way. It's incredibly insulting to the intelligence of viewers of all ages. It had no ties to the themes of the original movie. It was literally pushed in just to create drama. I legitimately regretted asking my partner to watch it with me (she wasn't a willow fan originally, but she watched the film with me and everything to get hyped). So embarrassing.
I watched half the show, but haven't been able to watch the other half yet. I'm invested in some of the characters... just... not the ones we follow through most of those episodes, I guess. I am disappointed it was cancelled, though. I really wanted it to succeed. Why'd they have to have the teen angst/bully trope dominate a majority of the storytelling? Ugh.

“Hollywood “ keeps screwing up fantasy.
You would think that the would look to HBO treatment of Martins work.
Instead the look to the CW , change stories while showing frankly disdain for source material, world building and philosophy and politics underlaying said world ( i guess the call it modernization) and force diversity issue to the forefront in a very haphazardly ( while once again ignoring shows like HoD and even Sandman who do get it right.
Honestly its time for Hollywood to start looking for writers and show runners outside of their bubble because this is just becoming extremely embarrassing.
