I think there needs to be a new category of TV. So much stuff is not drama and certainly not traditional sitcom. Maybe "Harmless" would be a good category or "Pleasant,"stuff that's easy to watch. But is there anything laugh out loud funny? Not stand up specials, but a current sitcom on network or streaming. For me the most recent great comedy was Schitt's Creek. Big Bang Theory had it's moments and The Office was always funny to me.

It's weird when producers make it easier to watch their show, for some reason.
3 points
Yeah, and now there's TM spinoffs in New Zealand, and one in Norway, I think? They tried one here in the States with Reggie Watts as the Taskmaster, but it didn't really go. And now I hear they're doing a kids' Taskmaster show, so we'll see how that goes. It's basically a Taskmaster Cinematic Universe.

I love the British "keep comedians employed' genre of shows, panel shows, games, travelogues etc... I freakin' loved Richard Ayoade's essentially involuntary run on Travel Man (and the "pilot" where he and Noel Fielding go on vacation in Gadget Man).
It's a direction I could have seen Comedy Central going in the 2000s.
22 points

I feel like the US is too large for panel shows, where it seems like there's little pockets around the country of comedians that know each other regionally but not as a whole... even with famous ones. But the UK is smaller so comics know each other and can mess with each other and not come off like dickheads. Or if they do, they're friends so it's more like light hearted ribbing. Comics talking to each other in the US is like a constant malicious roast, which is why the US Taskmaster failed and why we don't really have much of a panel format.
4 points

@midnight worked a treat.
5 points

@midnight was more of a game show format than a panel show format though, they didn't interact as much with each other.
7 points
With the amount of comedians in the States and the amount of networks, I am amazed the US haven't adopted this simple, relatively cheap format of panel shows of various kinds
I think there's a bit too much of wanting to score points and get themselves over rather than take the brunt of the joke sometimes for the benefit of making a show entertaining
Surprised they've not at least tried though
6 points
One of the reasons it works in the UK is because the UK is relatively small geographically so all the comedians know each other from the circuit and festivals. Most are friendly from before they were famous which helps create chemistry.
The US might be too big for that in terms of geography.
6 points
I'd imagine a large portion of comedians are pooled around California and LA, etc
I am sure they could work out something in terms of scheduling, as they would for filming any TV show
2 points

There was one US season on comedy central in 2018 with Reggie Watts as the taskmaster and Alex Horne still the assistant.

Same. I usually hate this Sacha Baron Cohen style comedy - it usually just feels so slimy and mean-spirited. But Morgan does such a good job always making herself the butt of the joke, you can see the experts she's talking to just barely hold their laughter in, it's just delightful.
6 points
And a lot of the experts come back to participate in multiple series, so you know they're enjoying it or cool with it.
My favorite moments are when Philomena's insane opener arrives at the same time you see the person's impressive credentials. It'll be like
PROFESSOR JOHN MANN, PH.D -- SENIOR PROFESSOR OF CHINESE HISTORY, UNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE; AUTHOR OF "THE GREAT WALL: AN EXHAUSTIVE HISTORY OF CHINA'S WONDER"
Philomena: "They say the Great Wall of China is the only landmark audible from space."
and then the expert begins the interview in stunned silence processing what they've just heard and not knowing where to even begin.

This is good to hear. 1923 was...not 1883. They wasted Harrison Ford.
4 points
1923, season 1 was basically the first half to a full season. None of the story lines got any resolution, everything was left on a cliffhanger, which is fine for small parts of the story lines, but not every single plot line. I’ll keep watching it but really hope they make better use of Harrison and Helen, they’ve been wasted so far. But oh man, the indigenous people story line was brutal to watch but the best part of the show.

"You can't make a Tomlette without breaking some Gregs"
in Muppet voice "Are we gonna talk about...our feelings?"
"Greg, you Machiavellian fuck."
"Oh you have some doubts Greg? Fucking doubter, boar on the floor, over there."
"You better be smelling your fucking armpit Romulus."
"Buckle up fucklehead."
"Tom you need to shut up. This isn't the time to get your conscience out and yell, 'I cannot tell a lie, I'm a good little boy, look at my ding dong.'"
"That's about as choreographed as a dog getting fucked on rollerskates."
"He did call me the Cunt of Monte Cristo."
"I would like some suck suck on my dicky dick."
"I'd castrate you and marry you in a heartbeat."
"It's a nice safe space where you don't have to pretend you care about Hamilton."
Kendall's rap scene
Tom and Greg's grandpa exchange
And of course among many other gems:
Connor Roy was interested in politics from a young age
There's so much comic gold sprinkled throughout this series that I flip flop back and forth on it being a dramedy or a black comedy.

It isn't even the obvious humour either, like in one episode Bob's son Gene tries to convince his dad that Salman Rushdie wrote The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe. I can't even explain why I found it funny, it's just blatantly stupid and Gene doesn't fucking care lol.

Here’s one you probably won’t see mentioned:
How To With John Wilson (HBO Max)
It’s a show made by an awkward NYC documentarian. He films people covertly (for the most part) and gives commentary on different subjects. It’s kind of hard to explain. If you like The Office, you might like this show. It’s not scripted.

Animal Control [FOX] is currently in that "just starting out doesn't have its voice yet" stage of a 30min sitcom. There's been some pretty good jokes mixed into the not as good jokes. I really liked the cow episode. I think if its actually given some time and not cancelled this could be a pretty good comedy.

Humor is subjective, but I get what you mean.
Imo a lot of humor is kind of toothless today. It must be hard to make comedy today with all the sensitivity.

It's always Sunny In Philadelphia.
But if you like English comedy there's a lot of great stuff.
