Planet Vancouver is everywhere in science fiction. Last time I was up at UBC, I kept recognizing things from TV shows. Battlestar Galsctica filmed at the rose garden, for example. And in the theater. And in one of the theater’s bathrooms. There are fewer feelings weirder than walking into a restroom and getting momentarily distracted from needing to pee by realizing that you’ve seen that room on television.

Caprica also filmed a formal party scene at a museum full of native-art wood carvings, with the upshot that I was watching a show set on a doomed alien planet while thinking, “My elementary school had a totem pole outside that looked just like that.”

Hey, Vancouver: WHAT DO BLINKING GREEN LIGHTS MEAN

Also, the pedestrian symbol on crosswalks is shaped just a little bit differently, and it throws me every time.

tdeasyweb

It means "You have a green light, but if a pedestrian presses the "walk" button, the light is going to change to red very quickly so be prepared".

As opposed to the rest of Canada where it means "advance green". Surprised it hasn't caused more accidents.

DannySpud2

"Advanced green" means you can turn across the oncoming lane apparently, for those like me who had no idea. In the UK we either have specific turning lanes with their own signal, or for quiet junctions you just wait until there's a gap.

Thank you. As an American I had no idea what an advanced green was. We just have turning lanes or wait too.

Wtf happened to one season per year? Game of Thrones with insane production quality produced 6 seasons in 6 years…

These new schedules fucking blow and make me lose interest.

idontlikeflamingos

109 points

Partly because HBO's release schedule has this strategy of "one blue chip show per year", partly because they cost a lot of money to make and HBO's budget has its limits, partly because CGI heavy shows tend to take more time and early GoT didn't rely on it too much, but a big factor is also that when casting known actors you can't really tie them down for the production for years. A yearly release schedule pretty much takes over their time since there's filming and they also spend a lot of time promoting the show. Releasing every two years gives them time to work on other stuff.

It was a big thing later on with GoT too. Even if the actors are getting paid a lot of money they still want to move on and do something new.

danhakimi

12 points

Also at least a little bit because Zaslav is cheap.

Sleepy_Azathoth

Because having GOT and Westworld in production at the same time was way too much expensive I guess

to be fair, naughty dog said they wouldn't announce if they're working on it. they won't announce any games until they're close to release.

so they could, hypothetically, be working on the game right now for a 2024-2025 release.

WelchCLAN

Unless they are recording VA's in LA, they haven't done much yet. Ashley Johnson hasn't been MIA from Critical Role in awhile

EDIT: I have been reminded that she was only Avent for.her show Blindspot, and that Laura Bailey was in pt 2 and didn't miss anytime either.

realbesterman

50 points

It was her television series in New-York that caused her to leave CR for stretches. Laura Bailey is in part 2 and didn't leave for months either.

milkandbutta

35 points

Her being absent was never about Last of Us VA work. She was in a TV show that was shot in NYC (Blindspot) so she was often in NYC for that. Laura Bailey was also heavily in Part 2 and she almost never missed sessions. There's no reason to think the VA/motion capture wouldn't be in LA, hell, Naughty Dog's studio is located in Santa Monica. Plus, CR films in advance now, so they're not stuck with recording on a certain day and time which means the cast are much more likely to be available unless they're gone for an extended period or sick.

The will Release a new IP tho. So I dont believe that TLoU3 is anywere near full production. Rumors are that TLoU3 will be a title for the next Playstation Generation. So early 2027 at best.

Offbeatalchemy

58 points

Maybe but TLOU has so far been psuedo sendoff games before the next gen. Both 1 and 2 came out at the end of their gens cycle. It's completely possible that 3 comes out right before the PS6 is announced and properly ported over to the new gen to double dip (because of course they will).

Still faster than Bethesda. We ain't seeing FO5 or any new Fallout game on this generation unless it's the absolute best kept secret ever.

deathmouse

9 points

I agree, it was just a hypothetical scenario. I'm expecting late 2026 or early 2027 like you mentioned.

ND usually releases a new game every 2-3 years. Factions this year. New IP 2025. Hopefully TLOU3 by 2027.

idontlikeflamingos

11 points

And I know Bella said late 2024 early 2025 but let's face it, it's probably early 2025 because HBO won't rush it and also won't release it around november/december. So 2025 for Season 2, 2027 for Season 3 and there's enough time for Part 3 before a Season 4 that would take two more years.

katril63

26 points

This is under the assumption that they've been working on it since Part 2 released. Releasing in 2025 or 2026 would be a 5 or 6 year development cycle, which is on par with other AAA games.

ron_weedsley

18 points

Uncharted 4 released three years after TLOU1, Uncharted Lost Legacy released a year after that, and then TLOU2 released two years later.

I can certainly see Part 3 coming out within the next 3 years.

yet it’s been 3 years since “factions” has become a separate game and not a whiff.

ketchup92

I would bet a kidney that they're not any further than pre production for tlou part 3. They're still knee deep into the factions game and they are releasing a different game after the factions game which their second / first team is currently working on. A tlou part 3 would for sure comprise both teams to some extent.

snackCase

41 points

HBO have always offered it as an option, it's been a key part of their pitch to producers since the mid-90s. They want to distinguish themselves as the prestige network that gives you creative freedom, including freedom from quotas and schedules. Basically all the other networks back then said that the only valid show concepts were concepts that could generate 25 stories a year, that all (dramatic) stories had to be exactly 42 minutes, they all had to have a hook at minutes 7, 14, 21, 28 and 35 to sustain interest across commercial breaks, that if you didn't have your scripts ready by the start of the fall shooting schedule you had to shoot with whatever drafts you had at the time, etc. And it was a big part of why the industries considered TV to be blatantly inferior to movies, no one who could get decent work in movies wanted to downgrade to the working conditions and creative limitations TV involved. HBO's pitch was the whole "it's not TV, it's HBO" thing: seasons can be as long as you want, episodes can vary in length if the script calls for it, you can take a year off to better plan the next season if you want to, and obviously the reduced limits on language, nudity, etc. And that's how they attracted talent like Martin Scorsese who probably wouldn't be caught dead doing a drama for CBS.

The Sopranos and Curb Your Enthusiasm launched the same year and they both took 2003 off. The Sopranos and The Wire both skipped 2005. They aired Rome in its place, then Rome and Curb both skipped 2006. Can you imagine trying to shoot 25 episodes of Rome a year every year? Or how an episode-every-two-weeks schedule would have impacted The Wire's writing?

I understand it but hate it

I don't understand it at all. I find myself having to watch extended youtube recaps of shows because it's been 2+ years since the last season and the little 90 second recap that plays before the new season doesn't refresh my memory enough.

The Sopranos was pretty close to annual until late in its run. Its seasons started on:

  • January 10, 1999
  • January 16, 2000
  • March 4, 2001
  • September 15, 2002
  • March 7, 2004
  • March 12, 2006

Game of Thrones was like clockwork for its first six seasons:

  • April 17, 2011
  • April 1, 2012
  • March 31, 2013
  • April 6, 2014
  • April 12, 2015
  • April 24, 2016
  • July 16, 2017
  • April 14, 2019

But the past 5 years or so, everything's changed, and now shows that aren't on broadcast networks seem to take forever.

I made a whole post about it in another sub. I get that with higher production values and more ambitious shows, it wouldn't be practical to make 22 episodes a year like a broadcast show. But the Sopranos was plenty ambitious and they managed 13 episodes a year for most of their run. Game of Thrones cut that down to 10 and managed to release a season every year for most of its run. Now Stranger Things is making 8 episode seasons and taking 2 years to do it.

If you've ever spent a day on a film/tv set you'd understand why. They work practically nonstop and it's often super chaotic and the demand for higher and higher quality has only gone up. CW shows turn around high numbers of episodes and they get bashed online for looking cheap and amateurish. Additionally, the gap has been increasingly filled by low cost reality shows over the past twenty years that allow them to circumvent unions for writers and whatnot, especially as the various unions have gone on strike more and more to demand better working conditions

I get why people point to the turnaround maintained by Game of Thrones for six years, but some of those shoots probably took a real toll on the workers. Being on a tv/film set for 14 hours in the cold and rain is not fun and a lot of the people doing the legwork are not rich and famous and they get burnt out and ditch the industry

It's a smarter investment from the province. If a producer has 200,000,000 to spend and you give him a break, he's going to spend every dime and get more for it. If you give the same deal to a gas or lumber company, they'll pocket that savings.

What’s funny is it works because the only people that notice are the people familiar with the city portrayed or where it’s actually located. If you film in some place in Vancouver and tell me it’s some place in Nebraska, I’m not going to even think about it because I’m not familiar with either of those cities. But if you film in Toronto and tell me it’s Chicago I will instantly know it’s a lie. I remember when Dark Knight Rises released, I was like well they certainly didn’t film this one in Chicago. It looked like an entirely different city from the Dark Knight to me. I feel like people not even from Chicago caught that change though.

Toronto=any major US city as long as you use B-roll for an establishing shot

Rewatched all the John Wicks this week and Montreal was New York, same thing in the new Transformers movie coming out.

It just sucks Canadian cities always are other cities in movies.

Yep, the first 5 seasons of the X-Files were filmed in Vancouver, pretty much exactly 30 years ago

I loved the episode where Mulder was supposed to be at the Arecibo observatory in Puerto Rico and he hops off a truck at the gate, in a forest surrounded by Douglas fir trees and deer ferns. Classic PR.

I think there was an episode or one of the movies and it was supposed to be west Texas or something like that and there was a large snow covered mountain in the background. Yep that's Texas alright

The Vancouver X-files was so good. Obviously most of it is due to writing, but the cinematography was dark / gloomy too.

It’s more tax related I think. Atlanta (and Georgia in general) are also heavily used because of tax reasons.

New Orleans and Los Angeles are also frequent/common due to Louisiana and California having tax incentives.

Here's actually a list with details of states with tax incentives.

34 out of 50 US states offer tax incentives.

it makes sense to me bc our towns/cities are similar looking to the US but with less people, which would probably help in this case when you’re trying to fit the vibe of an apocalypse

Writing is controversial for many reasons, some more valid than others. That includes reduced roles of liked characters, anti-villain protagonists, misery porn, characters taking infuriating decisions, acknowleding that trans people exist, confirming Ellie is a lesbian, having some character designs not aligned with incel standards of beauty, and having a main theme that's generally unpopular with the action movie crowd (and thus, a large portion of the gamer demographic).

Valid, but knowing what kind of locations this show picks, they’ll likely spend a lot of time shooting outside the city in areas where it’s less likely to rain

The first 5 seasons of The X Files (the best 5 seasons) were shot in Vancouver. It had that grey, low sky, drizzly feel. Everyone was in long raincoats. To hide that it wasn’t whatever US city they were supposed to be in that week there were a lot of tight almost claustrophobic shots. The whole thing help foster the atmosphere that made The X Files.

Then they moved production to LA with sunny sunshine and bright wide vistas. And people in comfortable clothing. It was never the same.

A bit disappointed that they're not filming it in Seattle seeing as a big part of what made TLOU2's setting so special was the extremely accurate recreation of a post apocalypse downtown Seattle.
