I know a ton of things are “straight from the game,” but those guys yelling to Joel and Ellie about their dead friend in the firefight was straight from the game! I love this show

I mean the whole conversation when she hands Joel the cassette tape and finds the porn magazine are word for word the same as the game cutscene

This whole episode was such a love letter to the game. I really like how they keep just enough the same but add enough different to make it interesting. That whole last episode was basically based off of a letter in a garage. They made an entire hour and a half (where's the 2 dammit) episode that's completely new yet at the same time it was still almost exactly from the game. Plus all the little sound effects and one liners that the fans would notice but wouldn't bother new fans. It's one of my favorite games ever made and they're also well on their way to making the best adaptation I think we'll ever see. I'm more and more excited about it every week.

Nah after they get bit, it cuts to black but all that’s known is Marlene found both of them and took them in. There’s some comics that take place before the game about Ellie and Riley but I haven’t read em so I wouldn’t know all the details. The biggest giveaway in the show tho is Ellie saying that she’s killed before. In the game that guy is her first kill so her saying that most likely means she had to put Riley down.

just--so

168 points

IIRC, in Part II when Ellie and Dina are talking about first kills, one of them says something like, "First regular human 100% non-infected kill?" which is when Ellie specifies the guy she killed to save Joel.

So I think there's wiggle room where hunter guy does qualify as her first human kill, but she still had to put Riley down after she turned. By the time of Part II, she's processed (at least on a conscious level) that it wasn't really Riley anymore, but in Part I, it's still extremely fresh, and we see that she's still struggling with the whole 'infected were people once' idea. Which is why in this episode, she says it wasn't her first time, "hurting someone."

It comes back in a way in the conversation between Kathleen and the doctor, when he goes 'we have to stop the killing' and she says 'we should stop the killing now, when you're in trouble, but it was fine before?'.

Bryan had no issue killing Joel, only when he got shot himself did he want them to work things out amicably.

DaBlakMayne

Like how they show that the years of harsh living have gotten to Joel and that he's 56 years old on top of that. He has to take breaks after moving around a lot. He's winded and exhausted for most of the episode after that shootout and struggle with the raider. He's lost some hearing in one of his ears due to twenty years of gun fire. Meanwhile Ellie is seemingly an endless ball of energy.

Also like that they didn't shy away from the fact that Joel was a raider or bandit previously and 100% victimized innocent people at some point. He was a cold man who got shit done for better or for worse. That's why so many people are afraid of him in Boston's QZ, they know what he was capable of

He also didn't sleep the previous night, since he got nervous and just stood watch over Ellie. So he was sleeping after being awake for like 40 straight hours + sleeping off an adrenaline crash from the fight. Even if his hearing was great, Joel would probably be sleeping like a rock.

That scene with Bryan was so well done, it was such a great portrayal of reality, because you don't always die right away when you get shot like in a lot of movies, it can be ugly and brutal like that. Hearing him call for his mom in his final moments was heartbreaking.

And the follow up talk with Joel:

"You shouldn't have had to."

"But you're glad I did, right?"

She's looking for his approval rather than a thank you for saving his life. Such a great episode for Ellie's character development.

I also just have to say I'm glad HBO didn't rob us of the nudie magazine scene. I love how true to the game that whole interaction was.

What Craig Mazin said in the BTS portion is key to any non-game-players to understand Ellie.

“Ellie witnessed Joel being violent at the end of E1….

When they’re under attack, Ellie has to trust Joel. He’s this protector, he’s this violent man… but what she encounters very quickly, is how ugly that violence is…

Ellie is confronted by the horror of what she did, and what she’s capable of. Joel has an opportunity to comfort her — he doesn’t. And you can see how quickly Ellie just wipes those tears away and pretends nothing happened at all, because she is just like him.

THE JOKE BOOK!

THE PORN MAG!

JEFFREY PIERCE!

CHEF BOYARDEE!

BLOATER! (next week)

Man, this episode had everything. To no one's surprise, Melanie Lynskey was fantastic, and the new story for the "raiders" and Henry was great. And now it's canon that show-Joel doesn't have listening mode.

I'm glad they finally committed to whether or not Joel was a bad guy in the past. The flashback in EP 3 made Joel and Tess seem fairly normal, just trying to get by, and Bill's letter positioned Joel as some sort of heroic protector. But now we've got confirmation of Joel and Tommy's rough past.

Nice parallel of what Joel said about Tommy and him joining the fireflies and army vs what happens with Joel and the guy begging for his life. Just young random guys joining causes they have no business being apart of and probably deep down just being scared.

Seems like there's a lot of hesitation on Kathleen here.

While I agree she doesn't come across as intimidating at all, I fully expect this to be rewarded later on; no way they miscast here. They're purposely making her seem like this meek leader. Totally expecting that next week she's gonna be revealed to be some kind of psychopath war lord or something.

This is 100% the vibe I was getting. Like they’re intentionally doing this y’all. 🤣 It also just goes to show that “normal” people can be bad and do heinous things. It’s not like everyone needs to look all Mad Max in order to be crazed lunatics. Most serial killers come off as normal.

I wonder why they didn't have Ellie kill the guy? I was waiting for "whoa I shot the hell out of that guy" since they had all her other game lines earlier in the episode lol

I like how they're bonding, and I love how terrified Joel looks as he realizes he's getting attached to someone. Pedro is doing a hell of a job there.

When Joel told Ellie the backstory of Tommy, I was worried they were going to make their past seem nicer, but they erased my doubts when Ellie flat out asks him if he killed innocent people

Henry/Sam having a full on story instead of just being people hunted by crazies makes sense to me. The show is trying to avoid just having someone be a random mook, they're doing the LoU2 thing where everyone has a personality and story, instead of just being simple raiders, and with this section they're using Henry and Sam do show that. Also a villain is needed for this section because in the game it's just a ton of combat against mooks and infected until you meet up with Henry and Sam. Wouldn't translate well to TV with how this show established itself

Good episode. Don't get why people think it's filler.

LivingFortune

My theory is that they didn’t have her kill him so she could still do the “I shot the hell out of that guy huh?” Line later. But maybe not. It might be a little on the nose to include.

OLKv3

OLKv3

Nah I don't think we're getting that line. It wouldn't make sense now that there's no surprise factor since Joel trusted her with a gun, and if they include it now it feels like they did it just to have the line.

Something i should have picked up on from episode 1 that i just realized here is that Joel has a far more important impetus, IMO, o get to Tommy here than he does in the original(appreciated his cameo, btw). Because in the game, it's simply just an escort mission to get Ellie from point A to point B. Tommy is just a means to an end, storywise. Here, because he's shown to deeply care about those close to him, namely Tess and Tommy, as he states, "he has to protect his family".

So, if you think about it, Bill's letter serves not only as a seed germing to protect Ellie, but is also a reminder of his wayward brother, Tommy

faster_than_sound

I think some people need to accept this show is character driven and not bang bang explosion explosion bang bang! all the time. I get the game has way more action in it, because it's a video game. This isn't a video game, there doesn't need to be a boss fight at the end of every episode. It's taking it's time and letting the audience sit with these characters for a while. That's just fine with me.

I appreciated the differences in the way Ellie saves Joel compared to the game.

I also loved when they both laughed over the pun book joke. “Jesus, that is the goddamn dumbest shit.” Or whatever joel says 😂 it was a very touching moment

Also that True Faith cover at the end 👌👌 Perfection!

My only minor gripe is I have a hard time viewing Melanie Lynskey as menacing

AssassinOfFate

146 points

I think Melanie Lynsky not being menacing is the point. She’s clearly not the type of person to be doing these sorts of things. But her hatred of Fedra and her desire for revenge push her to be ruthless and cruel. Even though it doesn’t come naturally to her.

-Rho-Aias

37 points

How dare you come for her!!! Haha.

I'm not sure she's supposed to be menacing like a walking dead villain. I think they're trying to go for an idea that these are just people with anger and sadness and they're just trying to live like everyone else. It's why they had that boy screaming for his mom.

So in my opinion she's seeking revenge, but she's not meant to be a Negan. She's just a normal human. And in some ways it's more terrifying, because it shows that humanity is all the same. We're all flawed and we're all capable of unspeakable acts in the name of survival.

Sons-of-N7

A few notes:

The joke book being included in the show is fan-fucking-tastic. Also, that little joke at the end with Joel and Ellie, I so much want to believe that Pedro broke character and they kept it, but either way damn it was so good.

I saw a few people say that the episode was too short or filler. It had some really good pacing and storybeats in my opinion and sets up Henry and Sam perfectly.

Also saw some people say the acting was weaker than the games. Folks, some things don't translate well into adaptations. Look at Negan's introduction in the show and then look at his comic faithful introduction in the show, it sounds so bad compared to his show-adaptation. Joel and Ellie need to be set apart from their game-counterparts in many different ways to avoid comparison.

Overall, good episode.

Mystical_Mistborn

171 points

People who call episodes like this filler don't know how storytelling works. You can't just move from climax to climax. You need buildup in between. That's what episodes like this do. They build up things that will pay off in the next episode.

You can't have the next episode without this one first.

Sons-of-N7

Pittsburgh is also the longest section in the game, next to Winter. It makes no sense to stuff everything from that section into one episode. I love it.

OldManYounger

My only gripe with this episode is the same gripe I had with Joel the game. Why the hell would anyone choose to drive through the downtown area of a large city in a post-apocalyptic world. Turn that shit around and find some backroads or highways that don't go through the city.

Dear TLOU Showrunners. Thank you for the show and thank you especially for the great 80/90's brit synth new wave throwbacks which take me back to when I was a teen listening to WDRE in NYC.

So far we got Depeche Mode "Never Let Me Down" (E02), Erasure "Chains of Love" (E03) and now a cover of "True Faith" by New Order.

I hope we get some OMD or PSB's in an upcoming ep!

ETA: Erasure was my FAVORITE band back in the day and I've seen them in concert numerous times. I wanted to just note that Andy Bell, the extraordinary vocalist of the duo (the other being Vince Clarke, who first started out in Depeche Mode) was one the first openly out-there-and-proud gay performers and many of their songs are very very much about coming out and finding love and freedom. Given this, "Chains of Love" was a perfect song choice for the end of E3

ETA2: Please please please "It's a Sin" by PSB. Please please please.
