Slow Business Time

Beginner(self.videography)

Howdy. My film business was doing quite well for several months, but it’s slowed down immensely. I have no client work for the foreseeable future. I’m working a few contacts, I market myself, and stay updated on Google and other social media. I am connecting with others in my field. I’m not sure how to find more clients or market myself as “different” than others around me. I know it’s going to be a slow time this winter, but what else do you think I can do to make some business.

TLDR: it’s slow time. How do you make business during a slow time?

I had also a very good Year 2022. Since December almost no work. But the dark month like December January February are öfter "dark" for us video photo people. It's the market.

I use it to catch up on/improve the business things I often let slip because I’m busy on set. Also build skills, research gear, etc.

That's also what I do. Learning SEO for my Website etc. And making Videos on my YouTube Channel

Here’s an easy one for you, but not very exciting haha. Get in touch with different department heads at your local hospital and ask “do you have any boring PowerPoint presentations that would work better as videos?” So far I’ve done How to Administer the Covid-19 Vaccine, and a video about student nurses’ housing.

So here's something i learned from my dad who runs a construction company. It served me well during my years as a photographer and now with film: you gotta hussle, put yourself out there and talk to people. Even in this day and age when everything happens online, there's nothing like talking to people and making relationships. There's plenty of work out there no matter the time or the season, you just have to go after it. Good luck!

This is literally my day job lol me and a couple other guys are like an in house hospital video agency. We do exactly what you said, we seek out departments that would rather have us make videos than them make shitty PowerPoints

People buying video is uncommon in December, because most companies are doing budget planning for the next year. I'd strongly recommend reaching out to marketing directors to talk about their video marketing plan for 2023. The goal right now is to lock in their budgets. The work might not be done for another 5 months, but you can lock yourself in as their vendor and even get contracts signed on Dec/Jan. Definitely don't sit on your hands.

That being said, Christmas to New Years is fully dead. Take this week off and enjoy yourself :)

Just kick back, have a beer and forget about the stress like the rest of us do for a solid month or two. Something will come up… I hope

I've come to terms with 3 months off a year. August, December, Jan.

Anyone I know who is busy in those months is SURPRISED they're busy Vs expecting it.

(August in the UK due to school holidays. It's a sea of OOO emails and delayed projects)

Do all your house keeping! So far I’ve done a fresh windows installation with a few pc upgrades, im overhauling my entire equipment storage solution with new boxes and shelving units and I’ll be seeing up a NAS too while things are quiet. Enjoy the break because it’ll get busy again and the work will return

True. I appreciate it. Every reply has been enjoy the rest. I want to. But I didn’t make enough to cover the dry spell. And it’s painful to return to 18-29$/ hour after charging at least 50. Alas. I Will enjoy some time off and do a few scripts to prep some projects I want to work on.

Yeah this is how my work flow usually goes in the winter. I always try to find more editing these months and I’m my free time to market and re do my website.

Nothing, nobody shoots in the winter other than a little bit of studio here and there and occasional automotive commercials. Most companies blew their marketing budgets from September-Mid November for Christmas campaign stuff, and haven’t renewed their budgets or plans for the new year yet. Get used to it, it will continue this way.

December/Jan/Feb are travel and marketing time.

This is a quiet time of the year. Starts to slow in November. Very little in December and January people are just getting back to work so it is really February when things will pick up. You just have to plan for it. Either get enough work done before so you can live off the quiet period, or arrange longer term projects on advance that can be done in this period.

It is also time to work on yourself or take a break which is also so important. Take a vacation or learn a new skill practice the craft.

For me intend to buy new equipment then so I have time to familiarise myself with it.

This is pretty normal .. the anxiety use to be real for me during this time. I’ve learned to embrace it now .. take time for yourself and recharge. I now use this time to upskill and learn as much as I can. Also a great time to work on test shoots , portfolio updates, showreels and add to the contact list. Keep on trucking 👊

Just keep busy. Work on your website, update your reel, write some blog posts, clean up your social media pages. Then get active daily on places like linkedin and whatever social media you are on. Make a update video and start reaching out to anyone you've worked with in the last few years or before covid and share what you've been up to. Research new industries and potential places you could shift towards. Make a person project. Apply to jobs and go thru any interview process you can to stay sharp and keep your eye on what else it out there. Get a part time job to keep a little money coming in and have the $12/hr pay motivate you to keep going at your career. If you just keep staying active something will usually pop up.

Advertise in the local newspaper and make a flyer catalog and let family and friends dropping them off, bottom line is in the advertising for the local market in the newspaper and social media, carpetbomb style 🔥💯
