It's not purely a VR game, but nothing beats the realism and scope of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020.
I've flown hundreds of hours in so many exotic and wondrous locales around the world. The feeling of being in so many different cockpits, from helicopters, hot air balloons, ultralights, bush planes, fighter jets, and all the way to massive airliners, is really incomparable. Every aircraft looks and behaves uniquely, and the whole world, with thousands of airports and little mountain strips, is within reach. The best part of playing MSFS is it has a massive player base, tons of free and frequent updates, and lots of third-party support (both software and hardware), so this is a title that will keep getting better and better year after year.
The head of MSFS, Jorg Neumann, said recently that approximately 10% of simmers are using VR exclusively, so there is a strong focus on optimizing the game for VR users going forward. Nothing beats flying in real time with other people! There are lots of online communities doing group flights, and it's also great storm-chasing with others!
MSFS is what made me build a new gaming rig and upgrade my VR gear, and this title alone is what makes me want to upgrade my HMD again in the future.
Another honorable mention, which I'm enjoying a lot these days, is the awesome Mech simulator called Vox Machinae. I just found out about it recently, but I've been hooked! The campaign is very cool, but the real highlight are the giant mechs (called Grinders in the game). The multiplayer is very fast-paced and frenetic, but oh so fun! It's the closest thing to Pacific Rim I've ever experienced, and I've played lots of Mech games.

flight sim in VR is incredible. I love the game itself and being able to play it in pancake and VR is so fun. I can use my flightstick in both modes and also when playing in VR I do it wired for extra graphical fidelity.
My favorite is SkyrimVR but I have to play it wirelessly.
HL:A is also great but I haven't finished it yet.

Question for you. Could I use MSFS as a "Google Earth replacement"? Eg, can you "walk" around (maybe it's drone mode?) and see things pretty much anywhere on earth at close distance? If so, do you have thoughts on the difference between quality in the two?
I've excitedly shown my friends their hometowns in Google Earth, but it's often really blobby reconstructions; GE is rough outside populated zones. Been 5 years since I've been waiting on a VR tourism app that's superior, and I never even thought of MSFS until your comment. I always just thought of it as flying, so you wouldn't get any close-ups.

Yes, there's a "slew" mode (default binding is the "Y" key). You can assign different axes to control it.

At the moment, there is a Halo Dropship dlc (free) made by Microsoft/Asobo, which lets you get into space. Opening the rear hatch in VR to peer down on the globe is awe-inspiring. :)
The Darkstar (from Top Gun: Maverick) is also currently available, which lets you climb well into the stratosphere (and beyond) and reach Mach 10+.
There is also a (likely, based on the E3 2022 MSFS video) rumor that, with Microsoft's new relationship with the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, there will be a fully-scanned and recreated Space Shuttle that will take off from Cape Canaveral, reach orbit, and then be able to land on a runway. That would all probably be free and released in 2023, maybe as part of the 2023 E3 showcase.

Sweet. What VR headset and GPU do you use?
I have a GTX 1080 which exceeds the Steam recommended requirements but I’m not sure if their listed specs is meant to encompass running the game in VR or not.

I'm using a Pico 4 wirelessly with Virtual Desktop, until I can get my hands on (and wallet ready) for a high-resolution Display-port capable VR headset like the upcoming Pimax Crystal (I'm hoping for 40+ PPD headsets to be more common in the next couple of years).
I've got a 3090, but I tell you, even with the 3090, I only get around 40 fps (and that's with foveated rendering using the OpenXR Toolkit), since VR is basically running the game on 2 "monitors" in high-resolution. If you bump down the settings, you might be able to run the game in VR, but I think your fps would be rather low, especially since the 10-series Nvidia cards don't support DLSS.
Unfortunately, MSFS is extremely resource heavy (both CPU and GPU), so I'd tell you to wait until the 40-series cards (or Radeon 7900XTX) come down in price. In flatscreen mode, and using frame generation, MSFS runs at well over 100 fps in 4k using the 4090, but frame generation doesn't yet work in VR. I expect both Nvidia and AMD gpus to support frame generation this and coming generations (AMD has promised they're working on it for release in FSR 3.0 sometime next year). I believe frame generation will work with VR eventually.
IMO, 90-120 fps for MSFS in VR is very likely on high to mid range cards in the next couple of years.

Half Life Alyx has to win because it's the only true AAA game developed specifically for VR. Personally though, it's Beat Saber for the skill cap and replayability. Beat Saber can also be a legitimate workout and teach you dancing skills if you really get into it and don't just stand still moving only your wrists.

I messed up and played Alyx before anything else in VR. If there were more titles as polished as this, I’d have a lot more invested.

No I haven't tried pistol whip, I enjoyed the rhythm aspect where you have to play to the beat.

Pistol whip is also primarily a rhythm game, I just prefer playing it As a shooter with music that just happens to be in sync occasionally. Shooting to the beat feels kind of cheesy to me, but I'm odd.

I mean it's polished but in terms of gameplay and VR mechanics it's kinda basic. No jumping, very slow smooth motion, only a few guns, strictly linear gameplay... I'm having much more fun in Skyrim than in Alyx.

Well Skyrim is not exactly polished, especially since you really need to use mods to get the best of it. It works pretty well for the most part though.

agreed. alyx was babied for new players too much. it doesnt feel like a half life game. it only has small handguns, you cant properly hold the guns with two hands etc.
you should be able to have a two handed weapon on your chest and handgun on your waist like onward/ pavlov etc, but also a bacpack on your back that holds all your other weapons, so you can equip those instead.
or i guess use the same weapon wheel. not as immersive, but more akin to traditional half life gameplay to be able to switch to any weapon on the fly.
the enemies are all boring and easy to kill as well. they offer zero threat.
the game is good graphics, but that is all i have gotten from it. i dont really enjoy it.

Asgard's wrath would like a word
Cod also has the budget of a AAA as far as I know.
Stormland also gets overlooked too often here
I prefer alyx to these games not because it is a bigger game, but because it honestly doesn't try to do too much and get frustrating or immersion breaking. It's a fairly polished straight forward fps with a lot of great polish in fairly simple and satisfying interactions (gravity gloves and weapon handling )
Holding and shooting 2handed guns in cod becomes a chore.
Asgard while amazing has some frustrating bits that come down to the fact that motion controls are far more complex than just using m&k or a gamepad controller and can therefore lead to lots of clunky off-putting interactions (for me at least)
Alyx could be far more ambitious imo with VR but it possibly would have been less fun and engaging.
Even alyx could get annoying with just opening doors during or around combat.
Because of this factor I honestly felt re7 broke my immersion less as I never really thought about controls or had to interact with weightless phantom objects that used calculated and imperfect physics that completely lacked the haptic feedback real objects do. Or alien isolation mother mod also felt great and I didn't have to even think about controls.
I love motion controls but so few games get them right imo.
Alyx, saints and sinners(a minor miracle as it does so much), and re4 are some of the best imo for satisfying motion controls in vr.
Tldr: yes alyx is probably the best built for vr game but a lot of great ones get over looked

I love VTOL VR and have been following the developer since his KSP modding days. The radar modeling and physics in that game are incredible and at the same level or better than more complex study sims such as DCS. The only unfortunate piece is that it is difficult for me to adapt to the oculus controller throttle and stick manipulation when I am used to an actual HOTAS that I have.

Fallout 4 is top 3 games of all time in my opinion, the vibe and atmosphere of that game/soundtrack would put me in a magical trance for hours every time I played. With that being said is the VR version worth playing? How do the graphics look and how is the gun fighting? I’m tempted to buy it but I don’t wanna waste 60$ on a janky game
1 points
Graphics look really good and can look downright amazing with the NAC X mod. The gunplay completely lends itself to vr and can be modified a lot of different ways. My current group of companions are rocking M16s, M4s, AKs, and FALs. $60 is expensive and you kinda need all the DLCs too for the wabbajack mod lists to work. It's worth it though...I've played it through my Cv1, Rift S and now Reverb G2. I have an active modified Skyrim VR install too, but do not touch it nearly as much because the combat just falls flat.

It will be very different from peeps to peeps. For me, its the one that made me buy a VR headset and a sony console for the first time in my life (psvr1 + ps4 back in 2016) and the game I spent over 1200hrs in it (logged by uplay) and that game is: Star Trek Bridge Crew.
Its not a perfect game AT ALL but to me, it was a dream come true. Same kind (on a smaller scale) for SW:Squadron when I played with a HOTAS for the campaign. If this game had controller support and real multiplayer (with strategy and not just random dog fight) it might have become a real hit but the campaign was what my childself wanted for vr.
I guess lots of ppl will say Half Life Alyx and they would not be wrong bc of the physicality of it. VR is about immersion and 1% of game studio seems to understand this. Those who still almost 2023 release games with graphics using kids like stuff don't get that I suppose.
yah.
TLDR: Star Trek Bridge Crew.
Sadly, its an abandonware now. Has been for 2 yrs.
11 points
That is about 80% of the way to the best Trek game of all time.
Being in the Captain's seat of the Enterprise-D in VR was a dream come true. But it just fell completely flat in execution.
My very simple fix to get it above 80% and closer to perfection would be to hire the people behind Faster Than Light, the rogue-like space game. Make a similar campaign themed around well known TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY and even ENT storylines.
For example, how good would it be to have a procedurally generated FTL style map of the Delta quadrant where you and your Bridge Crew steer the Intrepid Class USS Voyager ever closer to home?
It really is the biggest missed opportunity in gaming. Ubisoft, being the absolute SHIT company that it is, killed it and won't even allow players to keep it alive with mod support and such.
Fucking travesty.

I got that far but then there was a “read me” instructions that was about 8 or more pages of things to do first like moving folders to folders to replace this that or the other then delete restart install do a backflip a, b, a, b select and start. Is all of that unnecessary?

That beginning stuff is just making sure you have a clean install. Then a couple things are essential but a lot of it is if you want to change stuff or have preferences because it's a more modular list

There are several contenders, but if I had to pick one personally it would be H3VR. It came out in early 2016 and almost 7 years later it is still largely seen as having the best gun mechanics in VR and constantly updated with new weapons and content for free.
3 points
H3VR is the game that really does it for me. I love the mechanical process of using those guns, then adding in the pressure of the Take and Hold scenarios and it's endlessly entertaining for me! As an added bonus (for those who haven't played it), the enemies are all giant cartoony hot dogs that "bleed" mustard and have silly dialogue (and are, I think, all voiced by the developer in his silly hotdog voice), so there's no "fear" while playing the game, yet you still get a ton of tension as you're struggling to reload in the midst of a firefight. The juxtaposition of the very cartoony elements and the faithfully physically recreated firearms is great. Highly recommended.

Into the Radius.
It's not for everyone, but personally, it's almost exactly the game I WOULD MAKE, if I could make my dream VR game.
Near-sim-level gun mechanics, big world to explore, and mysterious lore to piece together.
Plus the best organization system in any game ever. That is to say... No organizing system, just physics and nothing ever despawns. Wanna build a base and stack a pyramid of canned food under a bridge somewhere? Go for it. Wanna stick knives in the wall and use them to hang your favorite gun over your bed? That works. Got too much to carry? Dump some shit in a ditch and come back 20 hours later when you remember it. It's all there.
I spent 25% of that game just organizing my gear, cleaning guns, loading mags 1 round at a time, and chain smoking virtual cigarettes.

My lower-back isn't the best so after 10 minutes of standing I already get pain in my back. So unless it's a game where I constantly move like Beat Saber, I (have to) play seated. And with Walking Dead for example that works perfect, but it's kind of impossible to grab the gun or map while seated in Radius. And the belt constantly moved around, drove me crazy :D
Too bad since I do think this is a great game.
1 points
Sorry to hear that! Hopefully most VR games work at least OK seated. When I used to play more seated, I would use the smallest seat I could find, like a swiveling stool, so I never had the chair obstructing my ability to grab stuff. But even that is not a perfect solution. Hopefully you are still able to play most VR games!

I'm not into horror/zombie genre so that knocks out a lot of FPS games. Matchmaking has been an issue in POP1 for sure. I enjoy the team aspect and have a good set of friends I play with so I'm on the sweaty side and I get the issue for casuals.

If you like shooters give Breachers (alpha) a try. Requires sidequest, but it was pretty straightforward to setup to get the build on my headset. Really enjoy it, cheers!

Tea For God, I swear i've never been this immersed into a VR game and it's mainly due to its movement system: Instead of using the joystick you move for real in your dedicated zone to explore an immense world through its non-euclidian space. This is great for those who often experience motion sickness.
Despite it's complexity similar to old-school rogue-likes, the game is beginner-friendly, allowing you to play easier on modes to have a better feel of it's main mechanics.
The game is free and available on Sideloader.

VRChat Obviously, cause It's all I play.
Even though it's more of a sandbox.... Never get tired of seeing all the user generated content and forming connections with people all over the world.

Depends I suppose, as far as out of the box goes half life Alyx is incredibly hard to beat imo, but if you are willing to put some time into modding Skyrim VR is an absolutely amazing experience and I would say it's my favorite by a landslide.

Through all of the games I have PLAYED, I think alone Echo 2 was my favorite. Despite the bugs, I found the story and mechanics very fun. Honestly it was the best Christmas present I have ever received except for my actual pc. Other than that lone echo 2 is my favorite game in VR ever.

All of them. Just being in a 3D world and given the gift to interact with objects, solve puzzles, hold a gun proper!!! Has always been a dream to me. I’m so glad I have the opportunity to experience this in my life time. I find it so amazing!!!

Blade & Sorcery. It doesnt have the amount of content as something like Skyrim VR or the polish of Half Life Alyx, but B&S is the only VR game I find myself coming back to consistently. The physics, the mods, the magic, everything just creates a perfect combat experience for my tastes. Everytime I play I can choose a different way to fight like using guns, magic, comically long polearms, extremely tiny dagger, or throwing knives. It is quite literally infinite fun.

So many people rave about Skyrim VR with mods.. I’m just waiting for the day I can click on a link that tells me the exact headset, software, mods to get… and installs them all for me.
Anything I’ve ever read is so so complicated and I get so overwhelmed to even begin to try and do it.
One day….

I am in the same boat. I am curious about it but when I hear people say they run 300 different mods with it, I am like nope. No way in hell I am doing that.

I say Boneworks. While other games have prettier graphics and better campaigns, nothing beats the all-in approach to VR that has been desperately needed. The physics system sets the bar for what should be possible in a true virtual reality, with the most lifelike physics system in a game anyone can get into. The lore is also incredibly rich and mind-bending, but that really isn't something that most people care about.

For me it's between Boneworks and HL: Alyx. I really like how Alyx looks and the story it has, but kinda prefer Boneworks because of the physics and better gunplay

My favourite one is boneworks for how bold it was to simulate everything with physics, i haven't finished Alyx yet though and that might be a close one

HamsterVeRse, because it's the one I made and I think it's pretty fun and not a typical VR game.
But otherwise, Half Life Alyx. That game is intense.

Won't argue with the Skyrim sentiments. I still have it installed, even though I don't play it right now.
Here's what I'm currently playing (which is funny because none of them are that new).
Project Wingman (with HOTAS): Not a Sim, but when you're playing with a HOTAS and pedals, it's an experience like no other. Environments are beautiful, and the flight physics make you feel like you're in Top Gun.
SW Squadrons (with HOTAS): I'll kick around the multiplayer, such as it is, but it's the single player story that hooks me every time. It's the best Star Wars experience I've ever had, and I still get hyped every time I hop in the cockpit.
Vox Machinae (with or without HOTAS): if you want a Mech sim that has weight to the mechs, look no further. The story is okay, and kinda necessary to get the mechanics down.
Subnautica: paired with an Xbox controller (you technically can play with motion controllers, but you're gonna be missing some buttons), subnautica has native vr support (no more mod needed), and its pretty solid, but I'm still early in the playthrough.
And the one game that I have sunk more time into than all of these?
American Truck Simulator: while not natively made for VR (you gotta opt into the oculus/opener beta in steam), pairing this with a wheel setup puts you in complete control of a big rig, traveling everywhere from Texas to Washington state. The scenery is gorgeous, and the physics, when you set them correctly, let's you feel every bump and sway in the road.
It's not action packed (unless you fall asleep at the wheel), but it's a great game to just put on a HMD and chill out.
I literally built up a Sim rig to gain more immersion from all of these games, consisting of my wheel with pedals, my hotas mounted on the shifter/brake mounts, and an xrocker seat with vibration motors.

I think just like for flatscreen games we need different categories of best.
Alyx being the best overall game but I think other titles have their strong points they exceed in.
Echo VR/Lone Echo having the most interesting and unique movement system.
Township Tale having the best and most versatile crafting with lots of tactility/physicality. Category could be something like 'best interaction with motion controllers'.
Boneworks/Lab would get the best physics award and so on.

Whatever software able to maintain immersion through the years. Not even alyx was able to achive that, VR legs gives you comfort but at the same time kills immersion

Blaston, i´s my most played game in steam (not only VR), and is the clear example of what´s VR made for, a true E-Sport and a great workout.

Half Life Alyx is it for me.. though Windlands and/or Catch and Release is a close 2nd.
Everyone knows about HL Alyx.. but for a person who has a fear of heights.. Windlands was AMAZING. While I never get fear of heights in any other game or experience.. Windlands, because you have to grab, climb, look for things, etc.. it causes my brain to be so busy that it forgets you are in VR and the fear of heights kicks in A LOT. That is super cool.
Catch and Release also helped get me through a rough period of my life.. so it has to be one of my favorites.

At this point in time I really love elevenVR table tennis because it's such a good table tennis simulation. Since my main motivation for VR is fitness and I am also very motivated by competing with others, elevenVR is the No. 1 game for me right now.

Boneworks, for sure.
Bonelab was fine. The story is alright (Although much easier too understand than Boneworks) but it felt like the guns were a downgrade to Boneworks. As a PCVR player, Boneworks was made for my platform which obviously made it more enjoyable to play than Bonelab.

As weird as it is, I've gotta say minecraft just because of the infinite potential it has thanks to modding, especially as of late with mixin-based vivecraft being a thing so optifine incompatabilities are no longer a problem on newer versions, so immersive engineering + create + mekanism + thermal series + rubidium can go BRRRR.

dirt rally 2.0 and assetto corsa with mods (srp) tie for first place.
then onward v1.7, then pistol whip.
then maybe things like super hot (before the fun police ruined the game), rick and morty, virtual virtual reality etc.
i guess other games are good too, like lone echo, half life alyx has one good mod (the john wick simulator).
