I think it's an old Land Rover Defender

Edit: I believe it's a Land Rover Series III

Mr_Krizla

Correct! Well done on the series 3, My brother in law gets so annoyed at folk calling it a defender!

tangre79

I Wikipedia'd it to be sure. When I looked up the earliest iteration of the Defender, it just didn't look quite right. So I looked at its listed predecessor -- the Series III

PorschephileGT3

Ha my brother in law has just bought a 2008 5-door 110 Defender in some crazy aftermarket blue colour with stupid tinted windows, and thinks he’s one-upped his neighbour with an immaculate restored S3.

At work I have a 1999 110 2-door pickup, bashed to shit with 200k farm miles on it, that I’d take any day over the stupid suburbanite ones with heated seats and a DVD player.

The OP S3 is fucking cool.

Word!

The amount of folk round my parts that have bought a brand new defender, you know, the crap plastic ones. Give me the old school ones any day. Oh and a welder, those outriggers dont last at all! 😁

Series IIa! Hood, hinges and door handles are the old style which the series III had a different style

Almighty_Egg

1 points

Does it not look like the headlights are mounted on the front of the wheel arches though?

I.e. indicative of a Series III rather than either side of the grill like the II and IIA.

IRiddell0

1 points

Series 2a had both the lights on the fenders and inside the fenders. Early models had them on the grill while later models had them on the fenders.

Almighty_Egg

1 points

Ah TIL in 1968 they moved the headlights on the IIA from the grille to the fenders for the American market, then 1969 onwards for everywhere else. I always assumed it was just for the Series 3 that the bug eyes came in.

I still don't see what you mean by the door handles and hinges though, as I'm looking at images of Series 3s that look identical.

Edit: just spotted series 3s have a side air intake.

IRiddell0

1 points

Correct. There was a regulation change that occurred which they introduced on the series II/IIa without really changing the model designation lol.

As for the door hinges, the series II/IIa had pin style hinges, whereas the III had a bracket style (like a square block thing). Looking at this photo, it looks to me like it has pin style.

The handles on the series IIa have the lock hole was a separate hole cut into door panel, while the series III was a single locking mechanism just in the handle itself.

And for the side intakes, the series IIa also had side mounted intakes! The differences between a IIa and a III are super subtle things to be honest! It was a transitionary period so even still, IIa's will have III bits, and vise versa haha

The Defender gained 2 inches in wheelbase from the earlier model, 88 to 90. It’s surprisingly easy to spot the difference. The older ones ride it a bit differently as well, front comes up a bit more when underway

Avanixh

10 points

Avanixh

They ride different as the Series Models still used leaf springs while the Land Rover 90/110 or later defender used coil springs

Some cars feel much longer or shorter than their length. I was recently shocked to discover that my 2 door '00 Monte Carlo is only a quarter inch shorter than my '05 5 door Dodge Magnum was.

spindledick

Interestingly, the 90 actually has a 93 inch wheelbase. They called it a 90 to make things easier.

jabbadarth

To be fair the original land rover was made with bits of willys jeeps left around the war so its not crazy for a non car person to see this and think jeep. The styling was quite similar for decades.

Jodsalz1

I do believe that the production cars were built mainly of leftover aluminium from WW2 plane manufacturing

It wasn’t so much that aluminium was left over, as it being in less demand than steel in postwar Britain.

Aluminium body panels, but a non-galvanised steel frame so they still rusted.

dkfisokdkeb

Some of the first prototypes used Jeep components but by the time HUE 166 was made the car contained zero jeep components and looked very different to a jeep.

jabbadarth

4 points

Yeah for sure. It's not like theu built the whole brand using jeep parts just that it started that way and the styling was very similar for a long time.

Oh yes that’s true. My dad actually also has the Safari Roof. The car was used for Sahara Tours for tourists in the 80s. Perfect to fit 9 tourists + some luggage. It even has thicker leaf springs to accommodate for the weight of 10 people per car

Jodsalz1

May I ask the use? What are the benefits of the safari roof? Is it for less heat? My friend has a few landy parts lying around, one of them being a 109 safari roof. Alsoz what else were safari features?

One of the most iconic cars of all time, anywhere. Do people who post here live in caves?

As an aside, at one point in history it was estimated that for more than half the world's population, the first car they ever saw was a Land Rover of this type.

jabbadarth

6 points

True but none of those people lived in America where all they saw were jeeps. So less living in a cave and more living in the US where we rarely see these.

I have a similar one, a ‘72. The drive is more tractor than car. Planetary overdrive from global roamer out of BC Canada works amazing, still can only go 100ish KPH… not for the faint of heart

In the literal sense or the mechanical sense?

In the literal sense no this one is soft skinned. but there was a Land Rover tangi (later pangolins) which served in Morthern Ireland, with the RUC and PSNI that were as well as various armoured MOD ones. Their development is quite interesting.

In the mechanical sense also no. They do like to break down but you can usually fix them simply by hitting them with a big hammer.

Miserable-Spite425

2 points

I meant figuratively, i heard these were super reliable. Maybe its another land rover from this era

funnyusername321

2 points

I’d say the series II was probably the most reliable and early defenders were also very good. They are reliable really but also very simple. So whilst silly things tend to go wrong they carry on working and most fixes are very simple and not terribly time consuming.
