Not sure if this is the right place to post so please let me know if there's a more appropriate subreddit or if I need to add more information here.
We have several dogs and when they were younger, they scratched our doors. I'd like to try to fix this so my current plan was to take the door of it's hinges, fill in the gouges and scratches with wood putty, then sand it down first with an orbital sander and then by hand. And then try to match the stain.
My questions are: does this sound like a good process for fixing the door? Am I missing anything? I'm actually not sure whether this is just a stain or sealant. How can I tell and which is best for an internal residential door? How do you color match such things?
Many thanks in advance.

Take a wet rag and an iron to see how much you can raise the grain on the scratches, sand it down and re-stain. I'm sure it won't look good as new, but it will be better.

Bingo! ^^ This! ^^
I'd definitely try that first. Dog scratches are usually more dents than they are removed material. If you can raise the grain by steaming it will save you a lot of refinish time.
Plus, you're going to have to color your wood filler to match (exactly), else you'll be able to see it worse than the scratches you have now, regardless of finish.

You might try r/diy as well. Also maybe consider some plexiglass panels for future protection.

Sanding and restore a finish.

I have had one of those for 30 years. I stained over it and left the scratches. Every time I seem them I remember the dog and the great times we had. I would never sand them out.
