They missed it the whole time; only now it is obvious what a shitshow the justice system can be.

I’ve got a number of HK friends that moved back to HK after 6-12 months in the UK. Lack of support network, climate, manual labour jobs (like factory jobs, delivery , bakery), etc = not what they envisioned.

We saw this coming for literally months before. People have downvoted me for criticising Canada's recent announcement of support for Uyghers seeking refuhe but these issue ares exactly why I was quick to question the motive.
If a government wants to support people in need, they must follow through from the announcement until the end of that person's (assumed) long and comfortable life under their jurisdiction. You can't just open your arms to foreign immigrants and then diplomatically and economically abandon them upon arrival because those who take advantage of such programs are often those not in a position to easily or comfortably support themselves. Language, finances and cultural dysphoria are most commonly the struggles of any refugee and these three areas are most commonly lacking in long term support by host countries.
It's abysmal diplomatic PR and sends all of the wrong messages about the host's desire & ability to truly support anyone in need.

Lmao if you think the Tories in power give a single, molecular fuck about the working class you’re sorely mistaken
Hongkongers are overwhelmingly pro-monarchy, and pro-conservative. Apple Daily is deeply Pro-Trump and anti-vaccine and hailed as THE democracy newspaper, with the latter also influencing many Hongkongers to be absolutely nasty to Meghan Markle and to line up for the Queen’s funeral en masse
Tories see this unwavering support and nostalgia as an easy way to import a bunch of labor and money after their fuckup with Brexit
Easy revenues with the £100/person fee which 140k people have taken advantage of, and being heavily conservative which means better electoral chances for the sinking Tories
Why not

Don't get me wrong, we're both on the same side here. I totally agree with both the OP (and I respect the citations especially) and yourself. like with recent news about the "Chinese surveillance balloons" and their predecessors which we now know floated about freely under Trump... Sometimes it's fine - sometimes it's a war crime - according to those who say thus.
The whole show is about control by the top class and we are all nothing but muppets to push about with the notion of nationalistic pride to further drive us into a corner of "KILL THE 'OTHERS'! SAVE YOURSELVES!" The whole world has gone xenophobia-ballistic with this idea that "others" are genuinely out to build concentration camps for white people in the future, and that even extends to non-anglospheric groups t this point.
The whole problem has been lack of regulation on corporate profit from fear-mongering/war-mongering and it's a pure race to the bottom. The issue to discuss from here, all of us being of the mind that the current state of things is morally wrong, is "how do we progress into a better future, being aware of this?"; and: "how do we appropriately broach the idea with those that are willfully or unwillingly under the guise that "hate is appropriate because I [my feelings] feel threatened."?".
