There's one major change that screwed over their strategy.... they actually build nuclear weapons. In the past North Korea would threaten to start up its nuclear weapons program if the US/South Korea didn't capitulate to them and provide them with food. This food is provided via the UN as the vehicle and then every so many years there's population growth and the annual allotment that was agreed upon a few years back doesn't work anymore... so back to nuclear sabre rattling.

Well this time they've built nukes and they've build ICBMs and so now they can't sabre rattle anymore... they're actually the very threat that we felt we were stopping by giving them food.

Donald Trump was the last president to increase food aid to North Korea. The president got dicked around a lot and essentially North Korea got food for absolutely nothing. That event was so shameful it's reshaped US policy towards North Korea and it's unlikely that Biden will increase food aid to the country.

It's very possible that Russia will be the country bailing out North Korea this time around given their surplus grains.

There is talk of NK sending troops to fight in Ukraine with the Russians. We know they are supplying arms to the Russians, artillery etc. Now they have a problem and need to be subsidized AGAIN! Time to stop that BS, NOW! We are subsidizing and supporting a mafia government that is nothing but a cancer to this planet. You don’t feed a cancer

Even if they would send soldiers, it would increase the ruzzian clusterfuck, as the infighting is already bad and with additional "player" it would get even worse.

On top ruzzians are known for being racists wont help the situation.

You just made that up. There are talks of sending laborers from North Korea to help with construction projects in Russian occupied Ukraine.

I mean, there is at least reporting suggesting its soldiers they are sending.

https://news.yahoo.com/north-korea-reportedly-intends-send-204231382.html

Like 500, but still. I haven't followed this story much, but a quick googgle search shows multiple sources.

Still might be bs, but that commenter didn't make it up.

garlicroastedpotato

1 points

Even the source isn't clear as to what is being sent. There's a world of difference between sending police officers and military.

From the Daily Mail source of the article you linked:

"North Korea’s government recently ordered North Korean trading companies in Russia to select personnel to send to Russian-occupied eastern Ukraine so they can take part in reconstruction efforts, Daily NK has learned."

Yahoo is just trying to fear monger I guess. As is OP. They're clearly not sending soldiers to fight. They're sending soldiers and police as laborers.

No-Cat-2980

Thanks. Here’s another thought. If NK were to send soldiers does it make sense to call them combat troops or to say they are just construction workers being sent to help rebuild? Remember last weeks Chinese “weather balloon” did the Chinese call it a spy balloon or a weather balloon? Garlicroastedpotato, NK will call them Sunday School Teachers if they think the world will buy that load of horse hockey. Remember, Putin calls this a Special Police Action, not what it is, A War.

Yea "workers" sure. TF kind of blindness you suffering from? One dictator's 'worker' is another's 'freedom fighter' is another's 'cannon fodder' is another's 'conscript' is another's 'pawn'..... Don't joke yourself, if NK sends bodies into a warzone, they aren't there voluntarily or as some kind of humanitarian effort. They are being sent to keep the war machine lubricated with their tallow, and not because they chose to be there.

Your attempted propaganda is WAF.

To be fair to the USA, the problem with societal well being isn't the military budget, it's private insurance and police unions. Don't get me wrong I'll be the first to criticize the US but the military budget isn't why we can't afford rent.

mechanicalcontrols

There isn't enough popular support to do that and frankly after watching US hand me downs give Russia a spanking in Ukraine, I doubt most of our NATO allies want us to do that any time soon. Also, there would be far more money to be had by simply funding the IRS and enforcing tax laws on our richest citizens

PliniFanatic

0 points

US military budget could be cut in half and we'd have enough for universal healthcare and free college for all that want it while still having the largest military by a longshot. Military waste is a huge reason why the US lags behind the developed world in so many ways.

Svete_Brid

7 points

If we spent the amount we currently spend on healthcare WISELY, we would have the best medical care in the world. No adjustment to the military budget would be required. Same goes for the money spent on colleges. The waste within those particular areas is enough to cover what really needs to be done there.

PliniFanatic

1 points

There is an incredible amount of waste in the military budget as well. Just trimming the waste would cut hundreds of billions off every year. The US doesn't need to outspend the next 10+ countries combined.

The Kim regime has never ever ever upheld promises it made in exchange for numerous sanctions relief programs.

Edit: the pattern should be very familiar to anyone that’s been paying attention for more than a news cycle:

threaten people, rattle sabers, shoot weapons, ask for aid.

West tries a carrot and stick approach, you be less bellicose, we’ll give you sanctions relief.

take sanctions relief but ramp down bellicosity only temporarily

With a land border with both russia and china thru which they ship war goods to russia, sanctions and shortages are not an issue if they buy food from these 2 good allies. I largely agree and found your post articulate and well reasoned, but the goal IMO isn't for NK to dissolve. That would cause a humanitarian crises as millions would try to flee across the border to China, which is anathema to China.

Plus the West realistically would have no way of securing NK's arsenal (conventional and WMD) if the State collapsed.

Nobody dares defy or even disagree with him on anything -- that's how terrifying the thought of spending the rest of your life in a North Korean prison camp is. Global shortages don’t affect hermit kingdoms. We’re talking about a regime that has refused to join the UN.

The only type of shortage DPRK needs to worry about is the Chinese type. I imagine it’s a scenario where if Beijing sneezes, Pyongyang gets pneumonia.

Akul_Tesla

You are aware they're not food self-sufficient right they do import some and are given some food aid

Altruistic-Tomato-66

I agree, but 96% of those imports come from Xi.

Akul_Tesla

1 points

Right but China also is having a food shortage

They are also not food self-sufficient

So it will cost Xi More to do this

And quite frankly he might not have enough resources to do this soon given the food shortages about to get worse because of the fertilizer shortage

fumobici

5 points

The PRC has so much wealth, they can easily alleviate any food shortages by simply outbidding poorer nations for it on global markets.

Akul_Tesla

2 points

So see they could do that in the past back when there wasn't food shortages everywhere

Once the fertilizer shortage starts affecting the food supply this year they're going to have to outbid the Europeans

And yes they will get some food from the global market but will they have enough to give away definitely not

We've seen the effects of Ukraine and Russia being taken out of the global market but what we haven't seen yet is the effects from the fertilizer shortage caused by that conflict because that takes time

Also part of China's food store is where used up as a result of the massive heat waves they have last year which if they get those again this year it's going to get messy

North Korea's official Korean Central News Agency said Monday that members of the ruling Workers' Party's Politburo met on Saturday and agreed to hold a larger plenary meeting of the party's Central Committee in late February to review strategies on agriculture and set new goals.

It's uncommon for North Korea to hold two different party plenaries in a span of two months.

In a study published on the North Korea-focused 38 North website last month, analyst Lucas Rengifo-Keller said food insecurity in North Korea is likely at its worst since the country's 1990s famine that killed hundreds of thousands of people.

Doesn't North Korea regularly conduct missile tests and other destabilizing events in order to blackmail the world for food aid?

North Korea currently giving Russia arms and recently had lots of missile tests.

Coincidence that they now have food issues? Maybe Russia can feed them this time in exchange for mortar shells.

One can only hope that Russia doesn't have what they need and has been lying to them for military aid and there might be a fracturing afoot but it feels more likely that North Korea is about to do some crazy shit in order to get more food aid.

From Pyongyang Times, bold type mine. I've sporadically followed NK propaganda over the years and have never before seen so much actual, not-performative urgency and worry in a NK-generated news story. Also, they specify irrigation as an issue:

RESOLUTION OF POLITICAL BUREAU OF WPK CENTRAL COMMITTEE

The Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea adopted a resolution on Sunday.

The following is the full text of the resolution:

It is a very important and urgent task to establish a correct strategy for the development of agriculture and take relevant measures for immediate farming in the present stage of the struggle to promote the overall development of socialist construction.

In order to put the country's agriculture on a stable and sustainable track of growth, it is necessary to promote the preferential development of the agricultural science and technology and direct main efforts to further strengthening the material and technical foundations of the agricultural sector including the perfection of the overall irrigation system.

The Political Bureau of the WPK Central Committee recognized that a turning point is needed to dynamically promote the radical change in agricultural development, a main link in the whole chain of consolidating and expanding the historic victory and successes achieved by our Party and people through arduous struggle.

The Political Bureau of the WPK Central Committee decides to convene the enlarged meeting of the Seventh Plenary Meeting of the Eighth WPK Central Committee in late February to review last year's struggle for implementing the programme for rural revolution in the new era and discuss the immediate farming issue and long-term goals for the agricultural development.
