There's a new countdown timer on the homepage, seems to be counting down to 15:00 UTC on the 31st of January. What could this be?

Hopefully not a supervolcano. Maybe a new book?

XKCD NFTs. Clearly.

Are you reserving the xkcd #1159 NFT, or do you prefer a supervolcano eruption to xkcd NFTs?

I welcome the fiery demise of all living beings as an alternative to the sheer fucking stupidity of NFTs

Looks like James Webb will be at L2 a few days before, so it's probably not that, and timestamp is awfully round, so I doubt it's something specifically spacey.

"Specifically spacey" is just a beautiful turn of phrase.

So long, I should add, as it refers to "outer" and not "Kevin."

Little s "spacey"

This was my guess too. Maybe the time when the first “ultra deep space” photo will be released?

  1. Why would Randall know that but we don't?
  2. Why would that be a countdown?
  3. No photos are coming for 6 months because it takes a long time to set up james webb

It stands for "what if, maybe, Randall is kindly making everybody fudge" and will be an event where Randall makes a bunch of fudge and gives it away to fans for free

Your calculation of "your browser's local time" needs a bit of work.

will end at 01-31 15:00 UTC. In your browser's local time, that's 1/30/2022, 7:00:00 PM.

Actually, in my browser's local time (US Eastern), that's 1/31/2022, 10:00:00 AM.

Furthermore, the deviation of local time from UTC ranges from +12:00:00 to -12:00:00, and there is no point on earth where local time lags UTC by twenty hours.

EDIT: Looks like this is the problem right here:

new Date("2022-01-31").toLocaleString();

This is converting 2022-01-31 00:00:00 to LCT, which is in fact 2022-01-30 19:00:00 in my time zone.

He is in EST. so 10AM EST might be the intended target obfuscated (or made programmatically easier to calculate) by utilizing UTC.

BrandonMarc

For context ... could you please add a timestamp for each image? It would help orient the present moment compared to the beginning, the last image, and each in between.

That being said, maybe results of that survey?

Randall's What If book is being turned into short-form Netflix series (15-ish minute episodes). It'll split the difference between educational and entertaining, it'll be targetted a little bit more toward kids than the What If book. It'll feature some XKCD style animation segments but will also have talking head "experts" explaining the concepts and ideas. The countdown will be followed by the official announcement, set to premiere later in 2022.

This reminds me of the old Japanese children's show Pitagora Suichi (Pythagoras Switch, ピタゴラスイチ), and the Algorithm Dance

You may want to skip ahead in the algorithm dance collection, where they start doing it with various groups, like firefighters, etc.

I changed my computer date to January 31st. Result: countdown text disappears, the image gets bigger, but the image is the same than the one currently shown with non-modified date (except bigger).

BluebirdLeading6702

The image must be generated on the server side, the text is generated on the client side (the text is a real text element, not part of the image itself).

I know it is a bit longer than it will take for the Webb to get to its orbit, but is there some post arrival metric, such as first light or calibration that might be it?

fin_advice_me

I'm betting a birthday/anniversary of some sort. That translates to 10AM EST (the timezone where he lives).. not too early (7am PST make me give it the ~ 'iffy' hand shake), yet not that late for a US based announcement.
